    3. Hi Audrey, If you received both, they are one and the same so there is no reason to unzip the files. I only sent pages 89, 104, 182. I didn't get either one in return so I don't know what I did wrong. That's why, I didn't know if anyone had gotten the pages or not. I'm glad you did. I sent the Gedcom files first and when I didn't get them back through the group, I remembered Betty telling me that they should be zipped so I did it again. Sorry for the repeat. I didn't get that either. At least, most of you got the records. I did get a letter from you and the records from Ft. Wayne Library. Thank you. Those came in while I was having trouble with this computer and my mind has been on getting this thing up and running again. I looked at the pages but I haven't read through them yet. I meant to write and thank you. If they don't have Jan Mangelese and Volkie Janse Adriaensen, I will have to remove that from his page. I left it there because it was someone else's research and I did not verify it. These pages I sent, I didn't verify any of that either, but they were from Fannye Margaret (Roll) Holloway and I would take them as proof. She was, the last I heard from her, about 100 years of age. She had fallen a broken a hip, had spent some time in a nursing home to recover and had graduated to a cane and was back at home, taking care of herself. I hope she still is. She is a dear Lady and her mind is as sharp as anyone and much better than mine. She also has beautiful handwriting and none of it showed her age. I've already heard from several people from the group that wants the pages I need to send Bill and Betty. I will try to get them out in the next few days. I don't have them in the computer and have to put them in. Thanks again, Audrey, for the work you did for me while you were in Ft. Wayne. I do appreciate it and I will let you know when I read the pages you sent. Best to you, Martha

    3. Dear Members of the Roll List, If you are a new subscriber to the list, welcome! Back in the days before we moved our "private" mailing list to Rootsweb, list members had the custom of posting their line every time a new member joined the list. It might be helpful if we continued the practice, if you're interested. Some lists don't encourage this, but we're small and probably can afford the luxury. Posting lines gives all the list subscribers an idea of how they fit into the list, and who might be interested in what. We all used to have the email addresses of all the members of the list, and their lines on file. I don't know if that is practical now or not. In any event, my line is... Jan MANGELSE m. 3. I have checked out your WINDMILL on your family, Bill, and I have a few additions and a few differences of opinion on dates or names but, unless I have documentation, don't change your records to mine, my research could be wrong. I do have documentation on some of it. I will send information from the beginning of your family on what I have. It may take me awhile, because I have to work this week, at least 2 nights. I work from 8:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. and the nights I work, I don't get much done other than work and sleep. If I don't get it done soon, I will get a print out from the old computer and send it to Betty. She's much better at this computer than I am. If I am lucky enough to get off early, I sometimes work on the genealogy. However with it moving to Mexico and training for a different job, I doubt being off early. This includes several pages from John & Elizabeth to you. I will get it to you but it might be several days. What I need to know, since I can't send it through the Roll Group anymore, who would like to have a copy of this other than Betty and Bill? Send the E-Mail address. I have Betty's, Bill's, Audrey's, Ed's and Nancy's. Let me know who would like these pages. I commend you, Bill, on making these records available to whoever wants them. You even offer help on retrieving the files. That is what I have always done. I wanted my research available to anyone and I have guarded against my research being destroyed. On the Springfield, Ill. Roll's, a wife did a lot of research on the Roll Family and when she died it was discovered that her work had been burned. I've sent complete records to some researchers and direct genealogies to family members that I have connected. I would like my research available to anyone who wants it. I think the only work that I have that no one else has is the Not-Connected Family. I continually use that and connect a family now an then. I can add some to WINDMILL but it will take awhile to do it. Best Wishes, Martha

    2. Bill, You may think you're abandoned in Blythe, CA, but if you have an LDS Family History Center in town, you're golden! You can get almost all of their filmed archives, from census, Bible, vital records, wills, everything---from around the world. The film rental program is only about $3 a roll (you have to view it there, but really, how many people have a microfilm reader at home?). I've gotten so much information there that it is amazing. They also have CD collections: Social Security Death index, Korean and Vietnam death index, International Genealogical Index (IGI), Ancestral File (people's submissions), Scottish Records index....the list is huge! At the one here, they have the 1881 census for Great Britain and many other films and fiche that stay in the library. I met a couple in Concord, NH, who are filming NH records for the LDS. They are very willing to share info. You'll find that many states have had their records filmed by the LDS, and those are the copies that the states use. I've also spent 5 wonderful days doing research at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Very impressive---and free! The LDS have the largest genealogy collection in the world. Try it! You'll be surprised what you find! ---Robin Chalmers

    3. I am glad that you finally got the 3 pages that I've been trying to send for days. When I had trouble with the mail, I lost all the addresses in the address book so I don't have everyone's address now but I probably will again soon. I had most of them wrote down but I haven't found the notepad yet. Sorry about the attachment through the group, I didn't know we weren't supposed to send an attachment. I have a sample WinZip. I hadn't used it, until today. If anyone needs these pages unzipped, I can send them again if they send their E-Mail address. I did get Audrey's pages on the Mills Family during all these problems. I saved it to a small disk so I can retrieve that. I didn't get the picture of Moses. Betty, these pages I sent today, if you got them are from the N.J. Family and I keep them seperate from the others. It's just for my benefit. The N.J. notebook is an expandible one but it has expanded all it will and is 600+ pages + Indexes and the other is just a large notebook with 400+ pages and then Indexes. I couldn't get it all into one notebook anyway. Bill, I received a letter from you which you apologized for not having all your records documented. Don't worry, I doubt that anyone does completely. I have a lot of updated records which came from relatives on their families. This is the only way to get updated records now because for years, the records are not released. I think the 1920 Census has just been out but not long. Other parts of it came from the other researchers I worked with and swapped records with. Sometimes, it was as much as over 100 pages, just to compare notes and add dates or whatever we could add. Some of these researchers, Certified Genealogist, did not have documented records. I certainly, was not going to refuse information if it wasn't documented. Some of it, I collected from Court Houses, Libraries, Cemeteries or wherever and a lot of times I did not write down the source. I am, also sorry now for not doing this. I'll check out WINDMILL again on your line of the family and if I can add anything, I will send it along to you. Best Wishes, Martha

    1. Roll - .ZIP files
    2. William Henry Roll
    3. Dear Members of the Roll List, Some of us may not be familiar with .ZIP files. Here's some information. .ZIP files are a way to work with files that are too large to handle in ordinary ways. By substituting shortened codes for larger, regularly occurring binary code patterns, large files can be compressed to a smaller file size, allowing for an easier and quicker transfer of information. The file is said to have been "zipped." For you to access a file that has been compressed, however, the file must first be decompressed and returned to its original state. This is known as "unzipping" a file. A computer program is required to do the zipping and unzipping. I use three different types of .ZIP utilities: 1. Winzip, a shareware program, zips and unzips files. You can download the program over the internet. 2. Windows Commander, a shareware program written by a gentleman in Switzerland, is much like File Manager from Windows 3.x and Windows Explorer from Windows 95, but much better. Commander treats .ZIP files almost transparently. Windows Commander is cloned from the famous Norton Commander. You can download the program over the internet. 3. ZipFolders, a commercial program, attaches itself to Windows 3.x and 95. With this program installed, your computer decodes .ZIP files on the fly. You can ignore .ZIP files because your computer treats them as normal files. You probably have to mail order this one. I can send you more information about where to get the programs, and what the prices are. -Bill _______________________________________________________________ William Henry Roll Blythe, California [email protected] The genealogy of the ROLL, MANGEL and VAN WOGGELUM families on the World Wide Web at http://members.aol.com/whroll "A thousand candles have burned themselves out; yet I read on."

NJRolls.zip and loaded it into a word processor. Looks ok. Wonderful, and thanks! I can't find the FAQ that would have been sent to me when I subscribed to the ROLL-L distributed mailing list. But I think sending attachments through the list is a no-no. Attachments should be sent direct by private email. I don't know why. I have always received attachments through the list intact. They must cause problems on the list server's end. Or maybe people are wary of receiving them in a mass-mailing mode. I really don't understand the purpose for the restricion. Nancy, can you explain the ROLL-L attachments policy? Is there a reason that they are not allowed? Have a nice day, Martha. I have all her children listed as Felch. >Martha > >Attachment Converted: "C:\GENEALOG\AttnBill.htm" > Martha, I also got the message about Stephen Berkley Roll. So noted. My documentation practices are poor, and I know better. I just started genealogy in May or June of this year. I have been mostly collecting off the Web, and, as you know, documentation is scarce there. I have been taken up in a rush to collect names and relationships, and now regret the lack of citations. Some of the dates are wacky, one ancestor married on the day of his birth...Robin pointed this out. The information on my Web pages is mostly undocumented for the generations after my great great grandfather Jonathan Smith ROLL (1828-1904) and spouse Lucinda KIDD (1834-1902.) Ancestors before this have documentation mainly from Nancy. Robin has information about Lucinda KIDDs line at... http://members.aol.com/RLCww/ but her line doesn't go back very far. I have some information on Jonathan and Lucinda's son Joseph Hedges ROLL (1854-1937) and spouse Anna Louise LARSON (1856-1930) that I got from Frank CRAMER (Let me know if you want his address, he's a ROLL researcher descended from Joseph; but he's not on the Net.) Unfortunately, I have not responded to his snailmail yet. I have little information about my great grandfather William Henry ROLL (1862-1899) and his spouse Sarah SHIPMAN ( -1957). I have been seeking information about Sarah and her ancestors. I believe that I knew Sarah when I lived in New Jersey, but that was back in the 40s and I can't remember very well. I may have some pictures of her, some with me perhaps, but without identification. My father's middle name is HEDGES: David HEDGES ROLL, Sr (1913-1992). My brother's middle name is HEDGES: The Reverend David HEDGES ROLL, Jr. (1944-living). And, as I mentioned above, Jonathan and Lucinda's son Joseph HEDGES ROLL. When I asked my father in the 60s about the name HEDGES, he only responded that it was "the last name of a very close family friend," and didn't elaborate. I noticed Charity HEDGES, third spouse of James ROLL, and always wondered what the connection was. James was born in the 18th century, and that's awfully far back to be a "close family friend." I also notice that James' second spouse was Julia SHIPMAN. I wonder if she was not related to Sarah SHIPMAN, spouse of William Henry ROLL. I don't know if Jonathan and Mary HEDGES were the parents of Charity O. HEDGES, the third spouse of James ROLL. I wasn't aware of the "O." as Charity's middle name. I wonder of this is the initial of her mother's surname. Since my two brothers have surnames for middle names: David HEDGES ROLL, and Philip LENNON ROLL ([1948-living] LENNON is my mother's maiden name,) I had presumed my middle name HENRY was also a surname. Robin has HENRYs related to the KIDDs on her Web page, but the HENRY middle name in the ROLL line predates Lucinda KIDD. Your information is very interesting, and provides me some leads. I've done research so far only through: 1. Contact with other genealogists. 2. Searching the Web. 3. Buying and searching books. I have a vague idea how to conduct research for primary documentation, but don't have the foggiest where to start. I know birth and death records can be accessed. The nearest genealogical library is 200 miles away. There is an LDS Family History Center in town, but I haven't visited it yet. It can't be very big in an isolated town of only 20,000. Thanks for the information, Martha. Please be patient, sometimes it's a while before I respond. Teaching middle school is an ~exhausting~ experience nowadays (been at it 29 years), and I'm a procrastinator as well. Three out of five teachers quit the profession within their first three years! I wouldn't have stuck with it if I didn't like kids, though.

    3. I think I received all the postings of the last few days to the list, would anyone like me to forward them privately to them? I hope everyone received Ed's picture of Moses Rall, he has sent it twice now. If you did not receive, let him know as it really is worth seeing. A new (to me) Roll researcher answered one of my queries last week and I invited him/her to join our list, but so far I don't think he/she did. I did send him/her some questions and if I get any answers will post them. Sorry about the he/she, him/her, but with some addresses it is hard to tell what gender a person is. I have a second e-mail address, I don't know when or if I will change to it, but if I don't respond to my old one, please use this [email protected] (No gender recognition on that one either, but am sharing it with my son.) I am not thrilled with Prodigy net yet, nor am I entralled with Internet Explorer 4.0 and after hearing Martha's problem with the MS (is it outlook?), don't know if I will use that either. Not used to Win 95 yet, so hate to tackle anything else right now, I did load up the new PAF that came last May, but have not put any genealogy records into the new computer. Starting on Dec 1, the Roll list will be archived (if I would have requested it earlier, Martha's messages would have been on it) Don't know if the url will change when all lists go on it, but right now it is http://lists.rootsweb.com/~archiver/lists, for our list it will be http://lists.rootsweb.com/~archiver/lists/ROLL-L/1997/December You will have to change the year and month to whatever ones you will want to access. (The month may have to be in all caps, their computer is SMART.) Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving. For the first time, I am not cooking, we are going to friends. ____ Nancy Lohbrunner [email protected]
