Hello Kathy: I would love to read the letters from Isaac Clifford Roll to your relative, Edna Roll Sylvester and I am sure some of the others would too. Is there any way you could post them to the list? Old letters seem to make genealogy come alive. I think most of us have some data by I. Clifford Roll. If you do not have a scanner, could you possibly make copies and mail them to someone on the list who does have a scanner? (I have a scanner, but so far cannot figure out how to put a scanned page into text.) I believe Ed also has a scanner, anyone else? I'll be happy to pay the expenses. ____ Nancy Lohbrunner [email protected]
Thought I would forward this e-mail to the group for your information, just in case you might wonder why no mail on the list. Rootsweb ran out of storage for the archives! That should last us awhile. The next upgrade we plan is to double the memory in the main list server (lists.rootsweb.com) to 512 MB of DRAM. To accomplish that, we'll need to take the box entirely offline for 2-3 hours and there may be some brief downs after that while we tune things up. The downs will occur during the next 48 hours, and possibly as early as this afternoon if all goes well. After the main memory in the list server is upgraded, the next box we'll be upgrading is the search engine server. The new search engine server will have a gigabyte of DRAM and 45 GB of very high- speed RAID-5 disk storage. When the search engine upgrades are complete, we'll reindex the list archives, reindex the USGenWeb archives, give Marc Nozell all the space he'll ever need for the list archiver (:, and set up scheduled reindexing so the list and USGenWeb Archives searches stay fairly close to current. As always, I'd like to express RootsWeb's appreciation for your support. With a gigabyte of memory costing $3,500 and a RAID-5 array costing $7,500, we couldn't be doing all this without the support of RootsWeb's Members, Sponsors, and Donors. You talked about Isaac Clifford Roll, well I have copies of letters that he wrote to my relative Edna Roll Sylvester. I was wondering if you ever talked with her too? Edna is the one who did most of the research that I took over and am continuing to do. Kathy
Thanks Kathy for sending the dates on Abigail who married James Ayres. I sent P. 4 of my research, did you get it? It gives all the dates and information that I have on that family and continued P. # if I have any further information on the children. You have 10 children listed and that might be because you have a Betsy and an Elizabeth. I only have an Elizabeth. Don't take it out of your research because I could be wrong. Sometimes when people lost a child, they would give a later child the same name and it has happened over and over again. For instance, one family had three sons, each died as babies or young children and each was named George Washington Roll. It is in my research and I don't think they ever had one to live by that name. I would have to look it up again to be sure but many times, a baby would die and another would get the name. Everything that I have on that family is on my P. # 4. If you didn't get it, I can send it to you again. Thanks Nancy for sending what you have. I don't know if this is a brother to Daniel Ayres who married Elizabeth Roll but I believe it was. This part really threw us for awhile, I mean some of us on the Roll Research. The part that threw us was that Elizabeth (Roll) and Daniel Ayres had a son named James Ayres who married Abigail Roll. We just did not believe that James Ayres married his Aunt and it was not so. James Ayres, son of Elizabeth and Daniel married Abigail Roll, 5th child of John & Martha (Force) Roll. I just noticed Kathy, you have the marriage date for the James Ayres, son of Elizabeth Roll & Daniel Ayres, who married the Abigail Roll, daughter of John & Martha (Force) Roll and not for the Abigail Roll who married the James Ayres, daughter of Isaac & Sarah (Cauldwell) Roll. I hope this is not confusing and it can be until you look at the pages. What I send is exactly like I have and it is all that I have. If you will get a printout of what I send, you will have a printed copy of my notebook and all the information in it. I have made a lot of mistakes and I see it almost every time I open the notebook. Like I sent the P. 53 and noticed that it was in bad need of repair. Don't change your records to fit mine because I have made a lot of typing errors and otherwise. I don't change my records until I see the proof and I warn others to do the same. We all make mistakes, and I make more than most people. Nancy, I have 2 sons at home, one 19 who went to live with his dad for the last 5 years. He finished school and did a year in Tech. School and came back after his dad married again, as a genius. It's amazing how dumb I am but in a few years, it will be amazing how smart I have become. I HATE teenagers. The other one is 16 and is a Jr. in High School. He is really good on the computer. He came home the other day and told me that he had to do his family Genealogy for a class. I asked him if he told the teacher that I had it and he told me No. He is going to take the notebooks in, drop them on the desk and say, "Do I get an A?" Last night, a neighbor talked about a family crest. The 19 year old, Chuck, said that was neat, he wondered what his family crest was. My mouth about dropped to my feet. I told him to go in and open the black notebook to the first page and he would see his family crest. I didn't know these kids didn't know anything about the Genealogy. I had hoped that his 4 daughters or one of my sons would take over the work but it doesn't look like any of them are interested. But then, Isaac Clifford Roll or Roland H. Roll's kids never took over their work either. I am glad that these men shared their work with other and we got it and I have done the same. I can't name all the people who have helped me with the research in any page or several pages, but they are all listed in my pages. I know that I might should not do this with living people but they sent the records and didn't tell me to not record it so whoever sent it, it is recorded. I think they want to know their relatives just like we did. Nancy, these boys just pick me up and move me off the computer and they are that big. However, I have a son in the Army and another in the Air Force, both dedicated military, and I've told them all that it didn't matter if they were 5 Star Generals, they better not back talk me and they don't. So, they move me when I let them move me. When I put my foot down, they don't question my authority. To stop a full scale war, I will probably get another computer soon and they won't be allowed to use it. How's that for being stern? Audrey, I've worked on the Roll Genealogy for more than 20 years but not alone. I've worked with other researchers and did record swapping with some of them so I can't take the credit for the work. We got Littell's work and then Isaac Clifford Roll & Roland H. Roll's Work and continued it from there. The record swap was with Evelyn L. Norweb, Charlotte Giltner and Marguerite Roll. The research was by me, T. Lynn Kennedy and Janis Holland. All the names and Addresses of the people who sent information to me is in the research. I won't take credit for this work. I continued the work of others and put together what all these people sent me. All of these people named in the pages are the ones to thank for the research. Remember, the only way to get the updated records are with families. All else is blocked for 75 years. Genealogy is never finished. Martha
Hi Martha: I have nothing on Abigail. Did she marry James Ayres? Was he brother of Daniel who married Elizabeth, sister of Abigail? Nancy ____ Nancy Lohbrunner [email protected]

Thanks Nancy & Kathy I sent page 53. to show you what I have on the Sarah (Sally) Roll. While I was doing this, I noticed it was in bad need of repair and the way I sent it, I hope it is not confusing to everyone. If it is, I will seperate the information and send it again. Kathy, the Abraham C. Roll & Mary are different from Abraham & Mary (Brooks) Roll. This Abraham C. Roll was the 6th child of Isaac & Sarah (Cauldwell) Roll. I did find an Abraham C. Roll in Floyd Co., Indiana in one of the early 1800 Census and I think it was with 2 sons under the age of (?) and a daughter, also under the age of (?) but I will have to hunt through records to find it again. I did not find them again in the later Census so they either moved on or Abraham died and Mary may have gone back to her family, or whatever. This is what I have for this Abraham. 6. ABRAHAM C. b. 1773 Married: Mary Migrated to Cincinnati and later moved to Louisville, Kentucky. Never heard from afterwards. Now, Floyd Co., Indiana is just across the line from Louisville, Kentucky. I will send P. 4 with all this later but right now, these boys are driving me crazy because they want the computer. I don't have to work tonight, so when I get it again, I will send the page. Martha

Hi Martha: Other than being mentioned in his fathers will and "Moved westward" in Edwin D. Roll's book. Also "Went to the west and died there." by John Littell. "Abraham Roll and his wife Mary of HAMILTON CO., OHIO. Deed BK U:632 an undivided one half part of a tract. Release to Jacob C. Roll out of estate of John Roll, deceased. Date of deed 1813." That is all I have. Since we're on this family, does anyone have any information on Abraham's youngest sister, Sarah "Sally"? Did Edwin D. Roll have another Sarah "Sally" mixed up (or have I mixed her up) when he wrote, "She practiced medicine in Indiana. Four sons in Civil War, two killed. Five in Indian Wars, two killed." Her two children, Jacob Thompson and Betsy Thompson were named in Grandfather, Isaac's will (1804) as "children of daughter Sally Thompson, dec'd. Late wife of Smith Thompson." Can someone straighten me out? What was her husband's name? Smith Thompson or Jacob Smith Thompson? ____ Nancy Lohbrunner [email protected]
Does anyone have any information on the Abraham C. Roll, b. 1773, 6th child of Isaac & Sarah (Cauldwell) Roll? I have that he married: Mary (?). I found an Abraham C. Roll, wife's name Mary in Floyd Co., Indiana in the early 1800 Census. It was before the 1850 Census because the children were listed as male and female and under certain ages. Does anyone have anything on this family? I'm not certain that this Census record was for the same Abraham Roll. Martha
"Inscriptions on Tombstones and Monuments in the Burying Grounds of the First Presbyterian Church and St Johns Church in Elizabeth, New Jersey 1664-1892" compiled by William Ogden Wheeler & Edmund Drake Halsey: p.242 #1687 First Pres: "CR/In memory of Catherine/widow of Abraham Roll/ who died Aug 9, 1814/in the 55th year/of her age Affliction sore long time I bore/physician's arts were vain/till God did please to give me ease/and free me from my pain." She's the only Roll in First Pres, BUT I find it interesting the person at #1686 is "SR?in memory of Samuel Rawl/who died May 27th 1813/aged 19 years 4 months/& 12 days This stone is placed in token of the respect justly due the departed by his fond mother.//While on earth I did remain/was filled with sorrow grief and pain/farewell my friends & foes likewise/my journey is beyond the skies." There are no Rolls in St Johns. If anyone has requests for lookups, I will. Just don't pick the name Crane or something else with 50+ listings! I bought the book from Family Line Publications, 800-876-6103. ---Robin
Hello Martha: Once again I am amazed at the work you have done on the ROLL's and I appreciate the information. I am actively pursuing Sickles vs. Strickhauser at this time. Barbara Barth is writing an article on the Roll's for the NY G & B which will be published next fall and would like to know the surname of Elizabeth (don't we all!). A Van Woggelum researcher approached me a couple of years ago on Barbara's behalf and I sent info then (that article will be out soon, I will scan my copy and send it out). Barbara is now on line and found Bill's home page, he referred her to me. The editors at the NY G & B demand proof. I do not have proof of John Roll's birth, does anyone? The marriage? A few years ago, another researcher, Carol Personnette Comfort found Elizabeth Strickhauser, we both had seen Elizabeth Sickles and discounted her because of the baptism record of Robbert De Groot, with father Johannes De Groot. I did not realize was that Elizabeth Sickles father was named Robert until you mentioned it a few weeks ago. I have always maintained the Strickhauser was not proved, also no one could prove Sickles either. Strickhauser made sense to us because of grandson, Baltus and daughters, Catherine and Jane. Jane possibly named for grandmother Jannetje Du Chesne and Catherine possibly for grandmother Catharina Krobel (Strickhauser). This may be one of the problems that will never be proved. I will write to the people this afternoon and maybe one of them will be able to help. Thanks again, from a shaking So Calif. ____ Nancy Lohbrunner [email protected]

Nancy, Kathy, I don't know where the name Sickles in my research came from but I do know that all the people I worked with on the research had the same, all but Marguerite. I've looked up the addresses of the researchers for you, if you want to get in touch with them. While doing this, I came across an entire manila envelope from Charlotte with research on the Sickles name. Charlotte never sent a couple of pages, she sent from 20 to 50 at one time and they are all documented where she found the information. She is likely, to be the one to get in contact with and she did a lot of research on the very early Surnames married into the Roll Family. Charlotte's Genealogy Room was wall-to-wall bookcases and filled from ceiling to floor. I doubt that she ever had to leave home to do her research. This was before we had the internet. Mrs. Justin L. (Charlotte) Giltner 1110 South Renaud Road Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan 48236 Evelyn's address is from memory. I've always had envelopes stuck everywhere in my notebooks but it has been years since I've worked on the Genealogy, I must have recorded everything and put the envelopes away. Evelyn's husband passed away a few years before I put the genealogy aside for awhile, and it was such an impact that the genealogy work got ahead of her. Her Roll Connection was that her sister married a Roll and she was doing the research for her niece and nephew. She also had a copy of Isaac Clifford Roll and Roland H. Roll records. Both of these men warned of mistakes in Littell's book. It was a good place to start but a lot was missing and, as we all do, make a lot of mistakes. Mrs. Evelyn L. Norweb 3563 Hopper Hill Road Cincinnati, Ohio Sorry, I don't remember the zip. Janis was into computers and I haven't heard from her for several years and I have tried to find her on the internet but failed. She might have moved since I last heard from her but Lynn would know if she has. Jim got hurt on the job and they had planned to move into a smaller place. She was more into getting the updated information on the families as Lynn and I were. Janis was the one to do the "Allies" Index. It is what you all call the Surname Index now and I use it more than the Male and Female Indexes. When I get a letter or call, I look for the wife's maiden name and it has proven to be the greatest help to find information. The address I have for her: Mr. & Mrs. James Patrick (Janis (Roll)) Holland 8725 - 29th Northwest Seattle, Washington - 98117 The last of the addresses is for Lynn and I think I have sent it before to Kathy. Lynn was mainly the reason for the record swap, so we could talk pages instead of a name who was a child of whoever and trying to keep everything straight. She was also the means of the Cont. from Page # in my records because we could reference it forward or backward. Lynn and I carried our notebooks with us and we never failed to spread them out on a dining room table and talk to the wee hours of the morning while everyone else went to bed and left us alone. We loved the stories best. Mrs. T. Lynn (Roll) Kennedy 1835 Dean Street Huntington, Indiana - 46750 Marguerite had a summer home in Michigan and she always let us know when she was leaving Arizona and she took a lot of her records with her. She had a summer home on the shores of Lake Michigan while Charlotte lived on the shores of Lake Erie. After the poisoning by the maid, Charlotte moved into the Woods so she wouldn't have to have a full time maid and could manage with a woman coming in a few times a week to help her out. The poison was in small doses until the final and lethal dose that killed her husband and changed her entire life. Charlotte & Evelyn were Certified Genealogist and researched a lot of the very early records as did Marguerite but I think Margurerite was a family genealogist as Lynn, Janis and I were. Charlotte was a real stickler for documentation but Evelyn was more like the rest of us, we wouldn't turn down information just because we didn't have it documented. I don't think that Marguerite or Charlotte did either because we all had the same records and a lot of ours was from Family Bibles or just memories of family records. Lynn, Janis and I have strolled through more cemeteries than we ever believed that we would be in, made dear friends of court house and library employees and as for the mail, we have made contact with, at least, one member of the Roll Family in the U.S. I sent out so many direct genealogies that I clipped a couple of dollars to a manila envelope and the mailman would weigh it and leave me the change. I hope you find the documentation this time, Nancy. I believe that Charlotte will clear this up for all of us. I don't know where Marguerite found the Srickhausen name but when she sent the information, it wasn't Stickhausen or Srickhauser name, it was Stickland. I sent a copy of it to the others, Lynn, Evelyn, Charlotte & Janis and they all agreed, until it was documented proof, the Sickles name would not be changed. I was not the main researcher, all these people knew each other and Charlotte mentioned many times of the letters from Marguerite Roll and the research. I guess I was the main person on the record swap but not with the documentation. Each person had their own gift to give with Janis and her Allies Index and the record swap with Evelyn and Charlotte and Marguerite with thier questions and research on the very early Family and Lynn, Janis and I doing the updated information. If you find documentation, Nancy, I will record it so it will not be questioned again. I could probably help you now but it would consist of rumaging through mounds of manila envelopes and I just don't have the time nor the energy. I hope someday to give you all the research so you can some of the answer the questions that I have to answer now. I depend on Betty to send out the Penn. Family records and with all the questions from Audrey, I hope that someday, she will help Betty and do the N.J. Family records. I am glad for Bill for putting it all together on the Internet and Nancy for getting us all together. I bet you didn't know that, did you Audrey, that I would hope that you would help Betty someday. I just dearly, love Ed, for strolling through the Cemeteries as we have in our research, and Kathy for being so firm in her work. I have a couple of snail mail genealogies to send out now and I regret that you don't have this so I can just write to you and ask you to send this out to someone. I am learning to depend on Betty to do what I should be doing. I have carried on so, and all you asked about was the Sickles name, Nancy, When I get into Genealogy, I tend to be long winded. I know this is being Archived but I think these addresses should be recorded. I didn't mean for my comments to be recorded but these other researcheres names and addresses should be. We all have our conrtribution to make. With Love to you all. Martha
