    3. Welcome to the group. I've tried to find your E-Mail Address but failed. I knew that you just had to have one. When we sent floppy disk in ASCII, each of our computers could read it. I thought that was just great, so much easier than letters. I never dreamed we would get into anything like this. We could also send so much more information on those than in a letter. Most of the genealogy is still on the floppies and this computer won't read them. Sorry about the Library. I know how much work you did to get a copy for them. I don't mind you changing formats at all. I do whatever is easiest for me and I expect other people do the same. Each of the people I worked with had their own format and numbering system. Lynn and I were the only two to have an exact duplicate. Janis had a numbering system that I never figured out and I did try. She said it was much easier than ours. (For her, I suppose.) Do you remember the cousin in California that sent the connection of Joseph & Nancy (Barnet) Roll to Jacob & Elizabeth (Mills) Roll, I think he was a 2nd cousin, I'm not sure now? I could look it up but I would have to write a letter the old way. I am glad that you joined the group and again, I am sorry about the genealogy at the Library. You went to a lot of trouble to get them a copy so it could be shared with other people. It's good to hear from you again. Martha

    3. Thanks Ed, That is the way I remember it too. It wasn't as glamorous or notorious as the movies make it out to be and Piracy was a legal profession. I can't remember where I put things this morning but I remember the stories well. Martha

    1. [ROLL-L] Roll Pages - Attn: Betty
    2. Martha Roll
    3. Hi Betty, Thanks for sending the list of pages you received. You should have gotten, 165, 329, 330,331,347,474,537,538. If you didn't get the first two, I can send them again. Yesterday I sent 126,127,153,154. I have 7 more to send and it will be all I have on Bill's line of the family. I'll try to get it finished this weekend. Martha

    3. Hello Martha, Don't know if you remember me, but wrote to you a few times several years ago. Never did really get started on the Roll history, and have just recently. Had no idea you were still working on it, until I contacted William Henry Roll recently, and he gave me your address. When I started, I seemed to find a page missing from the copy I had made, and so went to the Library where the copy you had sent was, but it had disappeared. So I commenced retyping your material, and have added a little. I made some changes in format as I retyped it, and hope you don't mind. Just received several pages you had sent over the Rol-L list, and will be comparing them shortly. I look forward to hearing from you. Hansel L Haycox

    3. It looks as if the centuries are mixed up, but the listing of a Kidd as a "shipper" doesn't necessarily preclude his being the pirate. According to what I've read, the pirate, Captain Kidd, was originally some sort of business-man who was attempting to take advantage of a hostile situation. He aplied for and received a letter of Marque that allowed him to be a "legal" pirate and take prizes (as long as the prize was a ship from a hostile country). Not really a sailor, he never-the-less bought a ship and set out to make his fortune. On his first voyage he was rather uneventfully captured and hung, and was famous (infamous?) in his own time as a symbol of incompetance. I don't know where the image of his being a blood-thirsty cut-throat ever came from although I suspect Hollywood. Maybe descent from Captain Kidd is not quite as desireable as we thought? Ed

    3. Lucinda Kidd Roll (1834-1902) was the daughter of John Kidd (1813-1875) and Siche Maria Booraem (1813-1859), NOT the daughter of William Kidd the pirate who was hanged in 1701. John Kidd was listed as a "shipper" in the NJ death records. You'll find Lucinda and her husband Jonathan Smith Roll listed with John Kidd at Evergreen Cemetery in Hillside, NJ. (More on my web site.) Please correct your records! ---Robin In a message dated 98-01-22 18:26:08 EST, you write: << Jonathan Smith Roll was born in Westfield, Union County, N.J. > >Lucinda Kidd was the daughter of Captain William Kidd, the Pirate. > >Jonathan & Lucinda lived most of their lives in Elizabeth, Union Co., N.J. >They lived for a short time in Ovid, Seneca Co., N.Y. It will take me a while to look over your pages, they may contain new information. I will get back to you about any differences. Right away I notice one problem: Captain William Kidd was a ferry boat captain out of Elizabethport, NJ, on Newark Bay, possibly on the Elizabethport-Bayonne ferry. The pirate Kidd is back in the 18th century, and no current relationship can be proven. This Kidd was hanged, mostly for political reasons, in England a little before or after the beginning of the 19th century. He had a wife in New Amsterdam, and may have had children. I understand that he was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church of New Amsterdam in good standing. I have a little information about this Kidd, if you are interested. Sincerely, William Henry Roll >>
