    1. [ROLL-L] Butler Co., Ohio - Attn. Audrey
    2. Martha Roll
    3. Both the N.J. & Penn. Families were in Butler Co., Ohio at one time. A notation at the bottom of the page for Benjamin Roll, 1st wife, Sarah Culbertson, 2nd wife, Sarah Cory Harper, reads: Benjamin Roll was born at Derry Twp., Mifflin Co., Penn. He moved to the eastern part of Ohio, near Youngstown, at an early age. While there, he served a time in the Army. Sometime after 1815, he moved to Butler Co., Ohio where he remained until April 1823. He then settled in Darke Co., Ohio on a farm where he remained until his death. I am just beginning to add the missing pages from the file that Betty has on the Penn. Family. It is taking a lot of time because I can't tell from FTM if there's more so I have to check out everything. You certainly have been doing a lot of research. Martha

The site is operated by Hjalmar Van Woggelum. There is a good collection of Van Woggelum names back to the late 17th century. The information may prove to be useful in researching that line using the "backward Polish" research method. But part of Hjalmar's site is NOT family friendly. My apologies if you wandered into that part by accident. To avoid the part that may be offensive, you may want to access the genealogy pages through this URL instead http://home.pi.net/~woggelum/gene/html/surnames.htm If you don't click the HOME option, you will never see the other area. His server flashed on and off the internet several times while I was accessing his pages this morning. Hjalmar offers to email a GEDCOM. 1. [ROLL-L] ROLLs of Butler Co., OH
    2. David Hancock
    3. Hello, Here are some ROLLs mentioned in "A History & Biographical Cyclopaedia of Butler Co., OH with Illustrations & Sketches of Its Representative Men & Pioneers," Western Biographical Publishing Co., Cincinnati, OH, 1882 See: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohbutler/cyc/ and additional gleanings. This ROLL information is not on-line yet, since I just typed it for them. Do we have the lineages of these ROLLs mentioned? See how my husband's HANCOCK family is intertwined with the ROLL family and with each having a Sylvender ROLL & Sylvender HANCOCK running around? Sylvender HANCOCK was my husband's great-grandfather...and before them a casket was made for a (Capt.) John HANCOCK by John ROLL. Is it any wonder that eventually a ROLL descendant and HANCOCK would marry...but it took a long time for me to prove to my husband his "Buckeye" roots? He always thought everyone was "Hoosier." And, of course, I think this is probably the PA line of ROLLs here in Butler Co., OH, but haven't looked into it. I know Carolyn (ROLL) BRANDON is descended from the PA line and we are descended from the same SHIELDS line; and the SHIELDS were once in Butler Co., OH, also.. Audrey Shields Hancock from NJ Line of ROLLs whose descendants married into the SHIELDS line. "McGONIGLE'S. McGONIGLE's Station, on the Junction Railroad, took its name form Philip McGONIGLE, an old settler who contracted for and built one mile of the railroad at this point. He added the house used as a station, but it is yet owned by private parties. McGONIGLE had a horse-mill here in 1830, as also a still-house. Among the distinguished residents of this station have been Dr. Silas ROLL, who was here forty years ago. Dr. HANCOCK, who studied with him, was also a practitioner in this vicinity. Dr. James ROLL, a nephew of Dr. Silas ROLL, is the present practicing physician. Daniel LAREY was blacksmith here in 1806; some of the others have been Michael SHANK and Joseph HILEMAN. There is a handsome Grange hall in the village; also a Grange storehouse. A good mill is in active operation. The stone school-house, one mile north of McGonigle's, was erected in 1852 by J. S. SMILEY, contractor. There are about 50 people at the station, though it was never laid out." AND: "The following have been the names of the postmasters: Stillwell. Jacob G. STILLWELL, December 31, 1831; Willis R. DeWITT, August 16, 1842; George KYGER, March 8, 1847; Jacob G. STILLWELL, June 10, 1847; Sheldon A. CAMPBELL, February 28, 1850; Jacob G. STILLWELL, January 6, 1851; Silas ROLL, November 19, 1856; changed to McGonigle's Station, September 14, 1859." To add to this was this fact from the estate papers of (Capt.) John HANCOCK: John HANCOCK (my husband's gggg-gf) was laid to rest in a coffin made for $6.00 with the hands of Isaac ROLL who presented the bill for payment to the administrators of the estate. This occurred in 1827 in Butler Co., OH. To add to this within the estate packet of my husband's ggg-gf, John A. HANCOCK, (s/o John & gf/o Sylvender HANCOCK) was this: "Silas ROLL for medical attendance during last illness...$3.00 on 11 May 1850" (HOW ABOUT A $3.00 OFFICE CALL THESE DAYS? And this was probably a home visit. Suppose he got some tonic with it.) and these ROLLs made purchases at the estate sale of Jonas JONES in 1853. (Jonas was brother-in-law of John A. HANCOCK.): F. M. ROLL, Faney ROLL, & Sylvender ROLL. And "For visits & medical advice (for Jonas JONES, brother-in-law of John A. HANCOCK) $2.50 paid to Silas ROLL on 2 Dec 1854." And from other research is this: Israel ROLL, of Hanover Twp., Butler Co., OH, deceased wrote will 11 Mar 1876 & Codicil 3 Apr 1883. Probated 12 Jany 1884 Mentions wife: Mary L. ROLL; Children: William W. ROLL, James H. ROLL, Elias ROLL, Martha M. (ROLL) DONER, Hiram L. ROLL. Will witnesses: J. W. ROLL & J. H. ROLL. (Butler Co., OH Will Record Bk 4, 1881-1886, pp. 308-310) And this: Elijah ROSS Butler Co., OH Wills, wrote will 19 Sep 1863 and probated on the same day. Children: Gifford ROSS, Hiram P. ROSS, Marrett (probably Maryette) (ROSS) ROLL, John C. ROSS, & Jerome ROSS. Witnesses: Mary ROSS & Mary Ette ROLL (Butler Co., OH Will Record Bk 1, 1852-1864, p. 549) And this: John ROLL witnessed the will of John AYERS written 2 Jan 1866 & probated 18 Feb 1867 Butler Co., OH. Mentions children: Silas D. AYERS, Elizabeth C. SHEPHERD, & Eliza J. REES(Butler Co., OH Will Record Bk 2, 1864-1874, pp. 166-167) And this: Matthias ROLL of Hamilton, Butler Co., OH wrote will naming wife, Mary, sons: Isaac, Matthias, John, Samuel, Silas, Israel & Joseph; daughters: Charity, Ann, Polly, Abigail & Rachel. 25 Apr 1827, codicil 9 Jan 1829, codicil 6 Jun 1831, & probated Oct 1831. (Source: Butler Co., OH Old Will Record Bk. 2, 1833-1843, p. 519) And this: J. H. ROLL, M.D. along with others was on a committee who petitioned for a soldiers' monument on 25 Sep 1897. The file is unsigned and was sent to me by Harman Clark, who I think is the author. I will share with anyone interested. 1. [ROLL-L] Elizabeth Dew WYATT
    2. David Hancock
    3. Hello, All, I remember that some of you were descended from Moses RALL/ROLL & Elizabeth Dew WYATT. Possibly one was you, Nancy. I'm doing this from the top of my head in order to get this sent. I saw a lineage go through the WYATT-L and didn't pay much attention, so deleted it. I did write down that an Elizabeth WYATT, dau/o Edward WYATT (1768-1846) & Ann GORDON, married Moses ROLL, but it didn't "ring a bell" at the time. Edward was s/o Rev. John & Alice WYATT & John was s/o Thomas T. & Margaret (HANKS) WYATT. Now, I realize this was probably of some value to some of your lineage. Well, I kept the source, so here goes if you wish to contact this lady: Vonnie GALUSHA at [email protected] who gave a descendancy chart. Also, I'm going to ask this: Are you sure that it is Elizabeth "Dew" WYATT? I notice others in this family had sons & daughters with the middle name of "Dow". Hope this helps someone connect to the other half of their ROLL line. Audrey

    3. Dear Robin and Others Interested, I switched from Netscape Gold 3.0 to Internet Explorer 4.0 today, and was trying it out. Oddly enough my other software seems to run faster now, but my hard drive seems to have slowed down a lot when using Explorer, could this be a result of 32 bit access? In the process, I came across this... Benjamin CLARK m._____ Catherine CLARK b abt 1773, d. abt 1854 m. 09 Nov 1792, Westfield Presbyterian Chu., Hugh MARSH children: Charles MARSH b. 1773 Gideon MARSH b. 1775 Elizabeth MARSH b. 21 Aug 1776 Rachel MARSH b. 15 Nov 1778 I didn't find a Julia Anne, though. But that isn't necessarily a problem. Could this be our Gideon MARSH? He married a TUCKER? May have been married more than once. His age and location seem right. Anyone have information about Eliakim MARSH's brothers and sisters or parents? It seems that the CLARKs were Presbyterians, and the MARSHes were Quakers. Most of the MARSHes moved to Pennsylvania. I was looking for VAN WOGGELUMs, and found a connection to the MARSH and CLARK families. I think I saw MARSHes marrying VAILs and SHOTWELLs, who were also Quakers. I know MARSH isn't my line, but I see a benefit in studying Quakers from the area, as they intermarried to avoid spouses of a foreign religion. This can provide leads for the ROLL family research. Lots of names from the ROLL line appear in this data. In any event, if anyone is interested, the URL for the data is http://www.commercial.com/kinware Sincerely, William Henry Roll [email protected] _________________________________________________________________ William Henry Roll Blythe, California [email protected] The Roll Family Genealogy Windmill http://members.aol.com/whroll "A thousand candles have burned themselves out; yet I read on."

    1. [ROLL-L] privacy issue
    2. I'm passing this on. It's from a well-known writer for www.ancestry.com. You might also be interested in the copyright issue in the Jan/Feb 1998 issue of Ancestry magazine. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Are you putting out information about yourself, your children, and other living relatives over the internet? If so, this message is for you!!! Missing Links, Vol.2 #22 Where Are Your GEDCOMS Tonight? By Myra Vanderpool Gormley, CG Is personal information about you, your children and living relatives posted on a web page where any crook or kook can find it? It may be if you have shared your genealogical data via GEDCOM, pedigree charts or family group sheets. (Use any search engine and look for your names and check GenDex (http://www.gendex.com/ ) as well as visit some of the commercial vendors' websites who encourage software owners to contribute their GEDCOMS.) Are you guilty of invading the privacy of others, such as your living relatives, by passing along their genealogical data to someone else without their expressed written permission? You are, if you have shared your genealogical databases or research notes with a third party. The dead do not have a right to privacy, but the living do. Genealogists are sharing, caring people, and most of us think nothing of handing over all of our genealogical data to distant cousins, even strangers. "We should start thinking," says a Prodigy member in the Genealogy BB's COFFEE SHOP topic under "Sharing Data on the Web." The idea of sharing is good and technology has made it easy. However, technology is not an exclusive tool for honest people. If detailed personal information about you and your living relatives is on the internet, crooks can and do find it, and some scam artist may use it to hoodwink your grandmother into giving out the secrets that will open her bank account. It has happened. Your relatives have the same rights to privacy that you do and among these rights are: 1. Appropriation of one's name or likeness by another without consent; 2. The right to be free of unreasonable and highly offensive intrusions into one's seclusion, including the right to be free of highly objectionable disclosure of private information in which the public has no legitimate interest; and 3. False light in the public eye -- the right to avoid false attributions of authorship or association. Publishing (and putting it on a GEDCOM, chart or on the web is publishing) genealogical information about a living person without their consent may involve all three aspects of their right to privacy and they may be able to seek legal relief through a civil lawsuit. What can you do? -- If you find someone has posted information about you or living relatives on the internet, ask them to take it down. Be as forceful as is necessary. -- Exclude information about any living persons from your GEDCOMS and charts before sharing with others. Most genealogy software will allow you to exclude all persons born after a particular date, which you can pick as 1920, 1910 or 1900, for example. Or use a handy utility program called GEDClean (http://members.aol.com/tomraynor2/gedclean.htm). A copy of this freeware (Windows 3.x or Win95) is posted in the Genealogy File Library or your can download it from the above web site. -- Educate yourself about privacy issues on the internet: (http://genealogy.tbox.com/jog/aug96/advanced.html) Share your genealogical data, but don't intrude on others' privacy and do not allow them to violate yours.
