    1. [ROLL-L] ROLL - RODEN- SEARS
    2. Donna Chernick
    3. Martha, Again, you have been very helpful in giving me clues, etc. I need to clarify, though. My JOHN SEARS who first married HATTIE/HETTY ANN RADLEY, I haven't proven as being in Hardin Co., KY. But his wife Hattie was born there. John Sears ended up in the same area of Coles Co., IL as the Radley's, in the area of Wabash Pt., (southwestern corner) which changed its name early on to Paradise. John's 2nd wife was widow Matilda (Roden) Roll. I find it interesting that the Roll's were in Muhlenberg Co., KY, in or near a town called Paradise. Since my John Sears' parents are both said to have been born in KY, they would have had to be there fairly early. The one older brother we know for him, Isaac Sears, was born in 1811, KY. Do you know if there are published records for the Sears Cemetery in Muhlenberg Co., KY? I hadn't heard of a Sears Cemetery in Hardin Co., KY - do you have more data on that? I'm going to Salt Lake City this spring to the Family History Library, and if records are published, I can research them there. Also, would be interested in more data on the mother of William B. Roden - who was Susannah Swank. I find the Swank surname popping up here and there in KY. I think my only hope in locating my John Sears' KY place of birth and parents is to pursue the migration patterns. It's been a 25 year search, but with the Internet things are beginning to piece together a bit more. I'll probably die with my hands glued to the keyboard. Donna Sears Chernick Bellevue, WA

    3. Hi Kathy - I have retyped the material Martha & Thelma did back in the early eighties concerning the New Jersey Rolls, and will make it available to anyone who wants it as follows: On Disk - no charge. I have prepared it in Wordstar 7 500+ pages of family group sheets & 27 pages of index - $5.00 Those pages punched and in a 3 ring binder - $10.00 Also including approx 100 pages of wills, notes, magazine articles, etc, $15.00 Hansel At 02:12 AM 2/22/98 -0000, you wrote: >Yes I have your page 4, but in my pages I also have Mary baptized 6-14-1767. >I have Catherine born on 6-14-1777, same date just 10 years difference. > >If you would please send me Hansel's offer again, because I can't seem to >find it now. > >I just went back to my original data that I started with and found that it >is a copy of a letter that my great great aunt Hazel Roll Conyers received >from Albany County Records. 3. Hi again - Wanted to tell you I appreciate all the good words you have had to say about me. Not at all sure they are all true, but appreciate it any way. As far as the cost of the material I am providing, I think that by the time all is totaled up, the $15.00 for the full set will probably amount to 1/2 to 2/3 of the actual cost. Incidentally, would you like a copy of the material on disk? Also wanted to say thank you for the nice comment about Mom. Thought you might like to know that she passed away on Jul 4, 1996. Sometime ago when I met Charles, he was telling me of a story about Abe Lincoln and his first boat and its sinking, connected I think with John Eddy Roll. I have looked some, and found just a few indications, but no real story about this boat. Do you have any helpful hints on where I could look? Best Regards, Hansel

    3. I do have limited information on Catherine Roll & Abner Woodruff in the material I am preparing. I show Catherine baptized Jun 14, 1767 & that she and Abner Woodruff had one child, Julia A Woodruff b. 1847 d. 1946. I would say that these dates may bear further checking. Have no information on their chile Isaac Woodruff referred to in the e-mail from Audrey. If there is other information available, please post it on the discussion group, so that those interested can make copies and annotate their material when they receive it. Hansel

    3. THE WILDERNESS TRAIL isn't a book, but a short story. It's about the settlers crossing the mountains from Virginia into Kentucky along The Cumberland Gap. I can't remember the beginning point, but I believe the end was at Louisville, Kentucky. A lot of families didn't make it through mainly because of Indian attacks. If I can't find my copy, I can get it from friends. I gave them a copy many years ago and they are the ones with the scanner, if we can ever figure out how to work it. If we can figure this scanner out, I will send you a copy. I haven't sent the other things that I promised to send yet. I will get it all out. Are you the Byron Roll, brother of Carolyn (Roll) Brandon? If I remember right, he used the name Barney. Martha

    3. Thank you for writing to all these people I researched with. I am sorry to know that Evelyn is not able to work with it anymore. I appreciate you giving Janis my address to get in contact with me. I let the genealogy slide for a few years and it looks like the rest of them did too. The Margrietje who married Joseph Da La Meritague was the 4th child of Johannes Pieter Roll & Jannietje Duchene. They were married 03/02/1728 Reformed Dutch Church, N.Y. The reason I am certain of this is because I made the mistake of recording it as Margrietje, daughter of Mangel Jansen & Annetje Hendriex Volcx and since I have the original page, I used whiteout to cover it up. It still shows through and shows my mistake. I have seen all these marriages and names you are including in your letters but, to the best of my knowledge, none of us recorded anything unless we were certain. I only have two children listed for Jan Roll & Aaltje Bas. In both cases, it listed the parents names. Some of it is not in our research because we could not give concrete proof. Our research is not always documented because I didn't know how to document every name and date. I don't know which one of us recorded John & Mary Nevis as child of Jan & Aaltje Bas, but I believe it to be true. No one else recorded anything by assumption. Mary's father was James Nevis and he was a ship's captain and Johannes Roll was a passenger on that list. I wish I had been a better organizer. I don't have anything organized except for the notebooks. I can't remember what I did yesterday but I remember the records and the details very well. I also have the name of the ship and the passenger list SOMEWHERE. This is why we decided that the descendants of Jan Mangelese continued in the trading business. They had to return to their homeland for wares. Martha

    3. Thank you for sending the information. Matilda (Roden) Roll was listed in the 1870 U.S. Census - St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., Missouri. Sorry I didn't note what month this Census was taken in. I think she was probably married in Buchanan Co., Mo. before they moved on to Kansas. Christina is very interesting. In your 1860 Census, Brownville, Nemaha Co., Nebraska, you have her listed as age 8, born Indiana. The 1870 U.S. Census, St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., Missouri has her born 1850 Kentucky. Your Census Records, probably 1880 has her born in Missouri. This just show some of the mistakes made in Census Records. John Sears being from Hardin Co., Kentucky is very interesting. I had forgotten that the early families did travel in groups. The story of THE WILDERNESS TRAIL told of this because the trail across the Cumberland Gap was so treacherous. Then, I also remembered that some of the Roll Family were buried in the Sears Cemetery but I couldn't remember who or where it was. I looked it up this morning and found one. I know there are more. Sally Ann Roll who married Abraham L. Depoister. She was the 4th child of Abraham Roll & Rachel V. Rhoads. Abraham was the 5th child of Michael Roll & Christina Vought. Sally Ann (Roll) Depoister was buried in the Sears Cemetery, Muhlenberg Co., Kentucky. I think that must be in or near Paradise, Kentucky, because that is where Michael Roll & his family settled and died. I think there's a Sears Cemetery in Hardin Co., Kentucky also. For years, I belonged to THE ANCESTRIAL TRAILS Historical Society in Kentucky and it covered Hardin and several other counties. That was the name of their booklet every month. So, your information about the Sears & Roll families being in Hardin Co., Kentucky, Nebraska, Missouri & Kansas, and mine with them being in Hardin Co., & Muhlenberg Co., Kentucky, they continued to travel in groups. They likely came across The Cumberland Gap together and continued to settle and travel together. I have come across Sears Cemeteries several times doing research and I have accessed Ky. several times on the internet. I think this Sears Cemetery came up on it but I'm not sure. Paradise, Muhlenberg Co., Kentucky is not far from me and I have always wanted to stop when I went through but I never have, can you believe that? I've always been in a hurry to get someplace. I think I will just have to take a day and go. I always pay attention to where people were born and died. It gives the migration of the early settlers. You ramble pretty good but I love it. You remind me of a researcher who loves their work. One thing reminds you of something else and we go on and on. Lynn, Evelyn, Janis, Marguerite, Charlotte and I always got a chuckle out of that, we always said we had been bitten by the bug and we'd still be holding our pens when we did the genealogy in the hereafter. I guess the only way we put it down is when we aren't able to do it anymore. Thanks again Martha

Johannes *** ***This is the Johannes or John Roll that the PA Rolls have married to Mary Nevis. I have him married to Fytje Van Buskirk, don't know where I found that now, but would like to correct it. The John Roll who married Fytje Van Buskirk had their dau bap at Port Richmond RDC. I had been leaning toward this John and his brother, Mangle going to Westchester Co where they had ties and where a John and Mangle Roll later lived. Or was the John Roll who m Fytje Van Buskirk the son of Johannes Roll who married Margrieje widow of Jan Marmanseen Van Barkelo? (But then one of the daughters of Margrieje from her first marriage married a NEVINS/NEVIS and went to Bucks Co PA, which kind of made me wonder if Johannes and Margrieje widow of Van barkelo had a son John who also married a Nevins/Nevis and moved to PA with his half sister and her family??) This is not my line, but I am interested and would like to correct my records. Nancy

She did not have any documentation for SICKLES, she did say she had been in touch with Marguerite Roll and Marguerite thought it was STRICKHAUSER. (In the information I have from Marguerite's, she has NO surname for Elizabeth wife of John Roll.) I told Jan in my letter to her that I was in touch with you via e-mail and she would like your e-mail address. I will answer her letter this week and will send her your addresss, ok? My e-mail address was on my letter head, so thought if she was on-line she might have replied by e-mail. I will also ask her if she is on line and if she would like to join our list. Nancy

    1. [ROLL-L] WILLIAM B. ROLL/MATILDA RODEN
    2. Donna Chernick
    3. Martha, I've already received a gedcom from Betty on the descent of WILLIAM B. ROLL She was great in all our efforts to get it to me via e-mail. Not only is it amazing that these people could move so often, but the fact that they could put all their posessions into one wagon. I've lived in the same house for 30 years, and just thinking about a move makes me cringe. On the other hand, look how fast we can communicate via the internet and e-mail. In the Census Records of 1880, Bethany twp., Osborne Co., Kansas, it is checked off that THOMAS ROLL & LAURA A. (Jemison) ROLL were married during census year (both their names checked). I have a copy of the census record. John Sears is shown on a plat map of 1875, in Penn Township, Osborne Co., Kansas with land, and the Jacob F. Jemison's were on land 3 plat squares southeast of him, so they were neighbors. I don't know if John and Matilda were married by this time, though, but if she was in MO in 1870, with three children, my guess would be they may have married in MO. There is more checking to do. Thomas's bride to be would have been ten years old in 1875, and Thomas would have been about 19. Thomas Roll d. April 1938, Victor, Ravalli, Montana [John Sears and several descendants went to Ravalli Co., MT). Data from a Jemison descendant, says Thomas and Laura m. 1 May 1880, Osborne Co., KS. Laura A. (Jemison) Roll also died in Victor, Ravalli, MT, but I don't have a date. The children of Thomas and Laura were: 1. MATILDA ROLL; d. 1967; m. 11 Jun 1899, William Eddy. 2. EVELINE ROLL, b. 14 March 1889; d. 1966. She m. Lou Parker and William Elmore. 3. PEARL ROLL; d. 1976; m. Perry Baird. 4. LYDIA ROLL; d. 1976; m. Ralph McVey. 5. IRENE ROLL; d. 27 Mar. 1974; m. Jack Woods. (don't know if order of children is right.) I didn't know about their going back to KY before moving on. Is it Christina that was born in KY? The census records indicate that she was born in MO in 1854. Do you know where they might have been in MO? As for Hardin Co., William B. Roll's parents, John and Susannah (Swank) Roll were married there 25 Dec. 1800. I got that information from Betty, and I don't have data on any of the Swank's. But, John Sears' first wife, Hattie/or Hetty Ann Radley, was born in Hardin Co., KY also [they married 19 Feb. 1837, Coles Co., IL]. I am still looking for the parents of my John Sears, and just where he was born in KY (on census records he claims both his parents were born in KY). There were several Sears families in the 1820 and 1830 census records of Harrison Co., IN, as well. John Sears' first wife, Hattie/Hetty Ann Radley, was daughter of Barnaby Shute Radley, (mother's name not known), and Barnaby was son of Ichabod B. Radley/wife Hannah Bush. Ichabod was born in New Jersey from a Radley line that was in Essex and Morris Counties, beginning in the 1600's. Ichabod took six sons, and daughters with husbands up to southwest Coles Co., IL about 1827/8. One son remained in Hardin Co., KY. One daughter married a Sawyer, who descends from the New Jersey Tremble/Trembly family line (they married in KY and went to Coles Co., IL.) It's a possibility that my Sears could have come from the NJ lines of Sayre/Sayers/Sears. That would tie these people together somewhat. Because of the dangers of traveling some roads, many of them traveled in groups. There are Baker's who tie in with the Roll's and the Radley lines also. John Sears' property in Kansas was next to a Walter Baker, and a Benjamin Baker. Jacob Getz was also next to him, and Henry W. Landis, John Graff, Moses E. Feltt, and Jacob Schweitzer. The Jemison's came from a PA line. Looks like we both ramble on. Donna Sears Chernick

    3. The names you mentioned John Roll & Mary Nevis, Michael Roll & Christina Vought, John Roll & Susannah Swank, William B. Roll & Matilda Roden, all these names are the Penn. Family and aren't in the files I sent to you. These all tie into one family but I kept them seperate for my own benefit. The Penn. Family is branched off the first son of Jan Mangelese, Mangel Jansen Roll. The N.J. Family is branched off the 2nd son of Jan Mangelese, Johannes Pieter Roll. To me, it would have been confusing if I hadn't kept them seperated and that's why I did it that way. If you have a genealogy program for your computer, Betty has the Penn. Family in her computer. I have it too but I'm not good at sending Gedcom Files. I am updating this and hope to have it done in a couple of weeks. Martha
