Thanks for all the information. I don't know where Allen P. Rogers fits in all of this, but I hope to find something. My great-grandmother was Cleopatra Rogers born 1854 in Ala. Her father was Allen P. Rogers found in the 1860 Census of Franklin Co., Ala., born 1804 NC. She was 6 years old at this time. According to census he was married within the year to Elizabeth ????. His first wife ???? His youngest child was 1 year old. Unless census is wrong, which is possible. His children in 1860 are: Margaret, 17; Melonta, 15; William D.,12; Lucinda, 10; John C. 8; Cleopatra, 6; Sarah J., 4; Modenia, 2; Manda B., 1; all born in Ala. In 1865, Price Deverlin Rogers or Deverlin Price Rogers was born so I am guessing that probably the P. in Allen name stands for Price???? I found an 1810 census of Rutherford Co., NC. with an Allen Rogers as head of household and wife with two sons under 10 years of age. One of these sons could be my Allen. I don't know anything else other that this. Thanks for all the information and any additional information will be greatly appreciated. Nancy Carolyn [email protected] wrote: I am just coming into this conversation, and need to study everything that has already been written. But I wonder if I may have a clue to the missing piece to this puzzle of Allen P. Rogers. I am a direct descendant of Joseph Rogers born in about 1694 in Surry County. VA. He and his wife (probably Mary Fargeson, but there is some disagreement on that) had at least 10 children. I am the direct descendent of their son Aaron (b. 1726 in Surry Co., VA d. 1780 in Wake County, NC). Joseph and his wife's youngest son was Michael Rogers (b.1738 d.1797 in Wake County, NC). Michael married Celia Boykin (1745-1820) and had at least 10 children. One of these children was an Allen Rogers. This Allen Rogers lived most of his life in Wake County, NC and is buried at Wake Crossroads (formerly Rogers Crossroads). I don't have a date of birth, but he would have been born before 1804. He was quite well known in North Carolina, serving as a colonel in the War of 1812 and being elected to the state senate. He even entertained French General Lafayette in 1825! He left numerous written records but I cannot document his children. There is Col. Allen Rogers will, August Term 1848, Recorded in book B.B. Pages 384 which names "my two sisters, Rebeca (sic) and Sarah Rogers" as sole heirs. But there is also a will for Allen Rogers Sr. dated Feb. 1, 1839, Wake County. Also, the 1860 will of Benjamin Rogers (husband of Ann D. Rogers) mentions a Henrietta M. Rogers, "daughter of my deceased nephew Allen Rogers" and says she has lived with him for a number of years. All this is to say that I am really wondering if the Allen Rogers born in 1804 is one of these Wake County men, or one of their sons. There are estate papers that list one of these men as the father of eight children, including an "Allen Jr." Or am I just muddying the water??? John Rogers Sr. was a white man involved with the Cherokee. His Cherokee 'wife' was Elizabeth Emory. Eliz was the dtr of William Emory and Susannah Grant, dtr of Ludovic Grant and Eugihooti. John Sr. and Elizabeth ran a trading post and ferry at Old Hiwassee town which is just west of the intersection of Hwy 411 and the Hiwassee River in Polk Co TN. This is where it gets a bit complicated. Elizabeth Emory's first husband was trader Robert Dew (Dewes). Their dtr was Jennie. After Elizabeth, the elder John Rogers took up with Jennie Dew/Due. Their child was Talahina/Diana Rogers. John Rogers, Jr. was the son of John Sr by his white wife in Virginia. He was spouse of Jennie Due and father of Talahina Rogers. John Jr is recorded a few times having done business in the early 1800's in McMinn County, TN before1824. Sam Houston was 'adopted' by Chief John Jolly who originally lived in the Tellico village then later on Hiwassee Island at the mouth of the Hiwassee River where it enters the Tennessee River. Sam was originally from Blount County and had spent some time at Tellico with Jolly. He'd apparently encountered Talahina/Diana and had a relationship with her during that time. Jolly's brother was Tahlonteeskee. Tahlonteeskee had left this area in 1809 with a group of several hundred Cherokee which became known as the "Old Settlers". In 1817, John Jolly left with another group of people. He'd learned that Tahlonteeskee had passed and apparently went there as leader of the Old Settlers. He became chief there in Arkansas in 1817. >From 1812 to 1818, Sam Houston was involved with the War of 1812 and was at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. He was Cherokee Indian Agent until he resigned in 1818 at Fort Strother, Alabama. In 1824, John Roger, Jr. left Cherokee Nation east for Arkansas. He is credited for founding Fort Smith in Arkansas. I don't know if Diana was with the 1817 party or the 1824 party. At some point I do know that Sam Houston stayed with his adopted father, John Jolly and Diana Rogers for awhile. He went to Texas to fight in the Mexican wars there after this time.
