Joyce, I would be interested in reading what you found about the John Rogers and Sam Houston. I know that Allen P. Rogers was born in NC and later settle in Ala. John Rogers Sr. was a white man involved with the Cherokee. His Cherokee 'wife' was Elizabeth Emory. Eliz was the dtr of William Emory and Susannah Grant, dtr of Ludovic Grant and Eugihooti. John Sr. and Elizabeth ran a trading post and ferry at Old Hiwassee town which is just west of the intersection of Hwy 411 and the Hiwassee River in Polk Co TN. This is where it gets a bit complicated. Elizabeth Emory's first husband was trader Robert Dew (Dewes). Their dtr was Jennie. After Elizabeth, the elder John Rogers took up with Jennie Dew/Due. Their child was Talahina/Diana Rogers. John Rogers, Jr. was the son of John Sr by his white wife in Virginia. He was spouse of Jennie Due and father of Talahina Rogers. John Jr is recorded a few times having done business in the early 1800's in McMinn County, TN before1824. Sam Houston was 'adopted' by Chief John Jolly who originally lived in the Tellico village then later on Hiwassee Island at the mouth of the Hiwassee River where it enters the Tennessee River. Sam was originally from Blount County and had spent some time at Tellico with Jolly. He'd apparently encountered Talahina/Diana and had a relationship with her during that time. Jolly's brother was Tahlonteeskee. Tahlonteeskee had left this area in 1809 with a group of several hundred Cherokee which became known as the "Old Settlers". In 1817, John Jolly left with another group of people. He'd learned that Tahlonteeskee had passed and apparently went there as leader of the Old Settlers. He became chief there in Arkansas in 1817. >From 1812 to 1818, Sam Houston was involved with the War of 1812 and was at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. He was Cherokee Indian Agent until he resigned in 1818 at Fort Strother, Alabama. In 1824, John Roger, Jr. left Cherokee Nation east for Arkansas. He is credited for founding Fort Smith in Arkansas. I don't know if Diana was with the 1817 party or the 1824 party. At some point I do know that Sam Houston stayed with his adopted father, John Jolly and Diana Rogers for awhile. He went to Texas to fight in the Mexican wars there after this time.
