    1. [ROGERS] descendants of James and Mary of Newport, Rhode Island
    2. Carol Rogers
    3. Hello Patti, Your Rogers line is the same family line that I've been told "my" Jeremiah most probably links to. However, as you well know, speculation without proof gets you nowhere with genealogy. Someone sent me the trail of descendants that he had from the "original" James Rogers that you mentioned and his wife, Mary. If the internet submissions are correct, in addition to what this other researcher sent, James was born in 1589 in England as a miller, while his wife, Mary Jorden, was born 1591 in England and died 1678. I'm not even bothering to find proof of that info right now because I've yet to link my Jeremiah to this family, but I've noticed that a number of internet submissions support that same information. Do you have 11 children for Thomas Rogers mg. to Sarah Cole? One of those was John B., and not to confuse him with a cousin John Jr. who was the son of John Sr./mg. Elizabeth - John Sr. being a brother of your Thomas. The reason I'm pointing this out is that I've been making notes along certain names in this "family tree" that was sent to me. John B. Rogers, son of Thomas and Sarah nee Cole, had 8 children, and I've found burial records at the Common Burial Ground cemetery that match parents and possibly four children. If I'm correct, having those death dates helps me determine who might be living in Newport during the period that these newspaper articles were published. Example is for John Rogers listed as Master for ship Charlotte: "The Newport Mercury, 04-19-1773, issue 763, pg. 3" Who might he be? John B. died and was buried in CBG in 1761. Then this research lists a John Rogers, son of Benjamin Rogers born abt 1715, son of Jeremiah and Mary, who was son of Thomas and Sarah Cole. Perhaps that was him? In the Common Burial Ground in Newport there is a John Rogers born about 1708 and died 10 Oct 1709, which I thought might be the son of John B. Rogers as there are also buried there a Capt James, Capt Jonathan, and William, which I'm thinking might be brothers to this infant, or sons of John B.. There's another brother, Thomas, listed in this research that doesn't have a burial in that cemetery, but note the death of a Thomas Rogers in "The Newport Mercury, 05-16-1774, issue 819, pg. 3", as one from Newport who died on the coast of Africa. Then there is mention of a Capt. William Rogers in "The Newport Mercury from Monday, Jul 7, to Monday, Jul 14, 1766, no. 410" on front page, which might be the same William, son of John B., OR possibly William, son of John Rogers and Sarah Lawton, who is son of John Rogers and Elizabeth, brother to your Thomas/Sarah Cole. Previous research has him listed born July 14, 1709, and I found him dying 1 Oct 1772 and buried Old Cemetery with obit in "The Newport Mercury, 10-05-1772, issue 735, page 3" listing 8 children. He's also listed as Captain William in Providence Gazette of Oct 3, 1772. His wife, Sarah, died 12 May 1776 in 53rd year and buried at Old Cemetery. She is listed as William's executrix of his will in "The Newport Mercury, 02-22-1773, issue 755, pg. 3" and "The Newport Mercury, 03-08-1773, issue 757, pg. 4". There is also a William listed as selling food from his shop in "The Newport Mercury, Mondays, Jun 6-13, 1768, issue 510, pg 1". However, I just noted that William Rogers with the shop is listed on "North side of the Parade", which is same location of the Capt. William listed in the first sentence of this paragraph. Then also noticed that the obit for William leaving 8 children which I think is for son of John Rogers and Sarah Lawton - and married to Sarah - was listed as a merchant. I need your input on this as to which William is which. I'm building this, using the basis of someone else's research. Though I only made note of a date of Jan 5-12, 1767, there is also a William Rogers listed as executor of an estate for Mrs. Elizabeth Wilson - for whatever that is worth. This same Sarah Rogers, I believe wife of William, is listed in an article "The Newport Mercury, Mondays, July 18-25, 1768, issue 516, pg. 3" having something to do with the estate of George Thomas - not sure of possible relationship. Then there is a William Rogers who broke into a shop "The Newport Mercury, Sept 21-28, 1767, issue 473, pg 3". Now William, son of John and Sarah, from previous research has a brother, James, born in 1714. That might be Capt James born about 1714 who died 22 Aug 1776 and buried in Common Burial Ground in Newport. There's an article on a James from Newport, listed as a Mariner, in "The Newport Mercury, Jul27 - Aug3, 1767, issue 465, pg 3". The Newport Mercury, June 13-20, 1768, issue 511, pg. 2 I also have a NEHGS membership, which is great to have, especially when living so far from Boston! That's the site I've been using for these articles. All these were notes I previously made, but if you want links, I'm not sure how they will transfer such as for Jonathan who might have been the same son of John B. mg. to Jane Brown: http://docs.newsbank.com/s/HistArchive/ahnpdoc/EANX/107027E6AFB61C80/0F418C8 09CE5EA70 Lastly, before I stop for the day, in "The Newport Mercury, Aug 21, 1784, issue 1195, pg 3" is a short article selling a boat by Newport merchants, Joseph and Daniel Rogers. I have those two names listed as brother and sons of your Thomas and Sarah nee Cole. Also found a tombstone in Newport of a Daniel Rogers in 1789. Probably not the same as these men as if so, they would have been pretty old by then. But possibly they might have been grandchildren of Thomas. I did see a marriage listed in "The Newport Mercury, Apr 21, 1781, issue 1021, pg. 3" for Patty Hazzard, daughter of George Hazzard of Newport, to Joseph Rogers." Let me know if this helps. Dear Carol, This is so true! I thought the excerpt you sent to the list yesterday was so interesting, and I'm sure any descendants of that Rogers would love to have that info. I haven't done extensive research with newspapers, but what I have read has been fascinating. I was looking through newspapers on microfilm, and was just skipping from one paper to the next only hitting the social section where marriages, deaths, and visiting/traveling, etc. was mentioned. My eye happened to be caught by my great-grandmother's name on the front page and I discovered a whole episode of her life that no one in the family had ever told me (or anyone, I don't think). I've even enjoyed finding the advertisements for family-run businesses. Are you using the newspapers through New England Historical and Genealogical Society? My Rogers ancestor James Rogers b. about 1609 and died 1676 and his son Thomas b. 1639 d. 1719 were in Newport. I have a NEHGS membership, so if you find anything on them, I'd appreciate a link. I know you may be busy about your own genealogical searches, but if you have the time!
