    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: lilfishjean1 Surnames: Rogers, Daniels, Conaway Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.rogers/10379.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: ncj, I have been at a dead end with my paternal Rogers (aka, "Roggers", aka "Rodgers") line for about 8 YEARS now... My paternal grandmother (nee "Daniel(s)") told me before she died (when I was 9 -- back in the early 60s) that "we" (she and I -- my father having passed away when I was 2) were directly descended from Cherokee blood and to always "be proud" of that fact. She never said, however, WHERE this "Cherokee blood" came from (which family) but I have thoroughly researched her father's line and there doesn't seem to be any Native American ancestors there at all so it would have HAD to come from her mother who was (depending upon which US Census taker you care to believe) one -- "Martha J." or "Martha E." or "Martha Eliza" or "Eliza" OR "Catherine" -- nee "Rogers/Roggers/Rodgers" born in (again, depending upon the census) either TX or AL in 1858 OR 1857. I have no other info on my Martha J/E Rog(g)ers other than she married my paternal great grandfather, Peter Lawson Daniels, bn. 1855 in either TX or AR (probably AR) and they lived in TX in the 1870s/80s and beyond until both passed away in Hagerman NM in the late 1920s/early 1930s. I have never been able to find out anything about Martha's siblings, parents, etc. or where they came from. There is an enigmatic Palo Pinto TX, 1880 census which lists Peter L. as living with a "Catherine" as his wife and two sons, John & James (I think) AND a 70 year-old woman listed as "grandmother" (no distinction made if she was Peter's grandmother or "Catherine's") named Mary Conaway with birth state listed as "GA". I have no IDEA how this Mary Conaway fits into the tree at ALL. I have found Peter Daniel(s)' mother, Arminta (listed as "Eliza") Daniels (nee Hagler) in the Palo Pinto 1880 census and in the 1860 Montague Cty. census with her husband James Daniels (who was killed by Indians cc 1870) and some of their other children but have never found any link on any of these census to my Martha Rogers Daniels whatsoever... I tend to agree that the "state of origin" of these "Cherokee Rogers" is probably NC because of the link to that area with the Cherokee. I wish I could find even ONE "Rogers" relative of my Martha... **sigh** jean in CA Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
