    1. [ROGERS] John Rogers d 14 June 179-
    2. Looking for descendants of our ancestor--John Rogers who left a will in Fairfield District, SC on June 14, 1790. He died there on August 9, 1790 and his will was probated. We know a great deal about some of John's children and almost nothing about the others. 1. William Rogers was born abt 1748 and died 15 Nov 1822 in Union County, SC. He married Isabell 'Sibby" Ledford and they had at least 12 known children. We also know that to at least five of his sons received tracts of land from him-Jesse, Henry, Ledford, William and Joseph. We are also very interested in determining whether Henry Ledford was the father of Isabella and did he die at Draper's meadow Massacre? 2. James Rogers married Mary "Polly" Mobley. We have not yet found any children for this couple. 3. Joseph Rogers was born September 17, 1750 (according to his Revolutionary War pension request) and was married while living in SC to a woman named Mary. He moved from SC about 1787-1790 to Fayette Co., KY. He then moved to Oglethorpe Co., GA, Rutherford Co., TN, and finally Bedford County, TN. Known children are: John, James Alfred, and David. Probable children are Mary, William and Joseph. His other children have not yet been identified. He more than likely died in Bedford Co., TN in the 1830's as he is found in the 1830 census there but not the 1840 census. 4. Henry Rogers married Elizabeth Mobley. His known children were Reuben, Henry, Jr, and Simeon He possibly had children of Jared and Levi. 5. Thomas Rogers. He is not found in the Fairfield District 1790 census. He more than likely had already moved away from Fairfield before his father's death in 1790. We don't have a wife's name or childrens' names for him. 6. Richard Rogers. He is not found in the Fairfield District 1790 census He more found in the Fairfield District 1790 census. He more than likely had already moved away from Fairfield before his father's death in 1790. We don't have a wife's name or childrens' names for him. 7. Frances Rogers married William Mobley. She was born October 29, 1756. Her known children are: Ledford, Moses, Notley, Payton, Ailsy, and Allie. 8. Mary (possibly a middle name of Jane). May have been a spinster. John Rogers’ will: In State of south Carolina and Fairfield County in the name of God amen, I John of SC being sure of the abundant mercy and goodness of God though weak of body, yet of a sound and perfect understanding memories do make and constitute this my last will and testaments and desire it to be received by all of such: imprimis I moste humbly bequeath my Soul to God my maker beseeching his most gracious acceptance of it through the all sufficient merits and mediation of my most compassionate Redeemer, Jesus Christ, who Gave himself to be an atonement for My sins and is able to save to the uttermost, all that Come unto God by him seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them, and who I trust will not reject me, a returning, penitent sinner, when I render up my Soul with Comfort, humbly beseeching the most holy most wise and all sufficient God to prepare me for the time of my dissolution, and then to take me to himself into that peace and rest, and incomparable felicity, which he has prepared for those that love him, fear his holy name,Amen, blessed be God (----) item I give my Body to the Earth, from whence it was taken in full assurance of its resurrection from thence at the last Day; as for my burial, I desire of my dear wife my executors hereafter named whoI doubt not will manage it with all requisite prudence as to my word by estate I wille and positively order that all my lawful debts be paid and as for my land I desire it to be sold and all my other property at the discretion of my executors to be equally divided between my children; My son William, James, Joseph, Henry, Thomas, Richard, Frances, and Mary. 3. Carol and Clyde, Thank you for your thoughts - It just seems impossible to me that two very active men, with large families and businesses apparently arrived by way of a virgin birth - or some phenomenon . I keep thinking of quitting the Rogers and getting on with the Stewarts, but some tidbit of the Rogers always interferes and keeps me intrigued. The Rogers have not been a "close" family so I am unaware of any relatives who would qualify for DNA. My Mother's brother ( Ivan b. 1910) died many years ago and had two girls.. Please let me know if you have any great ideas to trace. Dorothy

    3. I have some records that give that info. I will try & find them and send them along. By the way I have the book on the JAMES ROGERS of New London,Ct. It has an index that is very hard to trace people. About your Thomas s/o JEREMIAH, I have seen info in records from Exeter I beleive that said ISREAL was the eldest son of hos mother MARY w/o JEREMIAH There was another son BENJAMIN who I had thought was the oldest as he had married & had kids before ISRAEL married. 2. Carol Rogers
    3. Margaret .... Clyde .... Now I'm curious to know how "fcoats@sc.rr.com" might have found or been implying a connection of Dorothy's two guys to Newport? Though I'm short on time now for getting back into ROGERS research, I believe I recall seeing the mention of some Rogers descendants in (or around) the Saratoga County, NY, found in "James Rogers of New London, CT., and His Descendants" book by James Swift Rogers. I was told by a genealogist located at the New England Historic Genealogical Society to search there as my Jeremiah Rogers, b. 1761 in Newport, RI, was probably a descendant. However, with all the research I've done, including finding that book and running through it, I highly question that connection as Y-DNA has connected my husband to the Newport James Rogers line that has paper trails from other individuals. I've found no connections in that book other than the mention of a Rogers married to a Rogers, but not enough info to indicate who the female Rogers line was from. This is my husband's Rogers line and his seems to fit into the same line that Clyde describes his wife's line descending from - though I'm missing parents of Jeremiah, born 1761, to solidify where that connection exactly fits in. But Clyde and I have speculated in the past with Jeremiah's oldest son being named Thomas that he probably fits into that same Westerly Rogers family. Is there any male Rogers descendant from Joseph M Rogers, b. 1805, or Thomas H Rogers, b. 1802/1803, that has been Y-DNA tested? If it is so that Joseph M and Thomas H are from the same Newport line that was hinted at by "fcoats@sc.rr.com" e-mail below, then it might prove interesting to see if their people in Saratoga County are connected in some way to the New London Rogers that also lived in that area. Somewhere in my collection of Rogers data is a short newspaper article mentioning where one of my Jeremiah's descendants (or spouses, as I can't remember) went to Albany for a visit. I had wondered at the time who they might be visiting in Albany as so many relatives of my husband's line had remained in the Brandon, VT, area where Jeremiah settled in 1806 with his two sons, Thomas and George M. - but, then, it might have been a spouse's family that this person was visiting. There is evidence of Jeremiah's son, Thomas, being in Lyons, Wayne County, NY, somewhere between 1810 and 1818 or so as his first couple children were born there. Genetically, this same line of Jeremiah's that my husband has paper trails from relates to a couple people who have managed to take their Rogers lines back to the most northwestern part of upstate New York (west of Wayne County), before they migrated onto Michigan, one stopping in Canada for a short time. I've always wondered if Dorothy's line of Joseph M Rogers, b. 1805, and Thomas H Rogers, b. 1802/3, might be somehow related or connected, but right now I have no proof of a connection of the Brandon, Vermont, line of Rogers who trail back to Newport to the Saratoga County (or surrounding area) Rogers. However, there are three Rogers brothers who settled in Wayne County, NY, about 1792 that have been well documented in history books as coming from a Rhode Island town not far from Newport, and I have suspected that line as trailing further back into the Newport, RI, line. I might also add that in this book on New London Rogers it is mentioned that the New London line is probably the one descending from James Rogers who came over on the Increase, at age 20, as exists a copy of "licens to go beyond the seas", dated April 15, 1635. This book indicates that the Increase James Rogers is probably the New London one rather than the James Rogers of Newport who was admitted a freeman in 1640. It also mentions that the New London James probably descends from John Rogers, the Martyr, which was the same one as the Rogerenes. Clyde, I'm curious to know how you found the info about our James Rogers from Newport probably arriving in Rhode Island about 1610. I've sometimes wondered if he came prior to the Mayflower as there are just too many James Rogers that existed in the U.S. in earlier 1600's than what is documented on ship records. You might want to look on Rootsweb's WorldConnect site. There are several entries for John W. Rogers - his wife is listed as Martha Massengill/Massengale and his parents as Joseph Byrd Rogers and Tabitha Elizabeth Massengale. It seems Joseph was a very early settler in Texas. Thank you so, SO MUCH! I just can't believe, after all these years of looking, that you found Martha Eliza's parents! This is just marvelous! I can't WAIT to tell my cousin who, like myself, has been trying to find Martha's family for more than a dozen years! If you ever need anyone to look up any information for you here in Sonoma County, Northern California, I'd be more than happy to help. (There were at least a couple of "Rogers" families who were pioneers hereabouts.) Thanks again, SO MUCH! Here's what I found: 1860 Falls Co., TX: J.W. Rogers, age 26 M.C., age 22 Henry, age 5 Eliza, age 3 James, age 5 mos. 1870 Falls Co., TX: John Rodgers, b. AL Martha, b. AL Henry Rogers, b. TX, domestic servant I'm just giving you the basic info - you may want to look at these records yourself. I'll do some more looking, but now we know the Rogers were in TX by 1855 according to Henry's birth. Sandra Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
