I have no idea if any of the Rogers I am looking for went to TN or VA. This family is driving me crazy. There is much info on a William Rogers who settled Southampton, NY (the "South Fork" of LI) who may or may not be the son of Mayflower passenger Thomas Rogers. My Rogers line is from Southold (the "North Fork"). I just can't seem to get past this brick wall! I'll keep you in mind if I find anything in TN or VA. VA in 1803 and proved in 1808. This is my summary of the will, which has missing edges, some parts totally black, and some lines in the creases missing. William Rogers d 1808 in what is now MO. Estate papers were originally filed in St. Louis, Territory of Louisiana, with a bond for $3500.00 by Lady/Lovy/Sady? Rogers, her mark, Vincent Carrier/Carries/ and Richard [surname not legible]. I believe the date is 7 May 1808, but only the "ei" of the eight remains of the paper. The rest is torn away. She is given until the 7th day of August next to provide an inventory. This is for an intestate estate. However, a will was found and the estate was proved in VA, a court for the counties of Hampshire, Hardy, Pendleton, and Randolph. In his will he left to children: William ] James ] divide land where decedent lives, 340 acres in the whole tract, with greater improvements on the side of the creek where he lives than on the other side. Only 150 acres should go with the parcel with the most improvements, and 190 acres go with the other parcel. Executors are to sell two horses and as many cattle of value sufficient to purchase a horse saddle & bridle for each of my grandchildren, Susanna & John Rogers, daughter & son of my son John Rogers, dec'd, to be delivered to each of them respectively when they come of age. John, dec'd. - his children Susanna and John Wearing apparel to his son James. Negro boy Abraham to be liberated at age 25 Elizabeth Margaret Gives to daughters Elizabeth & Margaret all my personal property, house furniture, & anything not already disposed of, and the privilege of a room upstairs in my dwelling house so long as they may remain single, also 5 acres of land out of the 150 acres to raise some corn to feed a horse, and one cow for each so long as they remain single. My 3 negroes now in Kentucky in the possession of my Brother James shall be set free - the mother named Sarah immediately after his decease and her 2 children when they are of age, the boy at 21 and the girl at 18. His brother James owes him 42 pounds, which I desire for the heirs of my brother Matthew on condition they will defend the title to certain lands sold from the sale of which this obligation was obtained. [followed by 3 lines unreadable] He appoints his sons William & James as executors. Signed William Rogers. The will was witnessed by A. King, David Jones, Thomas Hollinback, and John K/H? iscusson??? and dated 15 May 1803. The will was proved at the courthouse in Hardy Co., VA on 5 Sep 1808 by the oath of Alexander King, one of the witnesses. My ancestor of interest is the witness Thomas Hollinback [sic]. In 1803 this witness could be either Thomas Sr. or Thomas Jr. Thomas Jr. was b abt 1769 in VA and d 1845 in Sullivan Co., IN. His daughter Sarah b abt 1795 m John Rogers who died bef 1850 in Vigo Co., IN. I have no documentation for this marriage. They could have married in Ross Co., OH where her parents lived through at least Aug 1813 when they sold land. They were in Sullivan Co., IN by 1817 when he bought land. In the land division of Thomas, Jr.'s estate in 1847 one portion was allotted for Sarah Rogers. John and Sarah Rogers had at least two children, David b abt 1828 and Martha b abt 1829. Does anyone have any documentation for this John Rogers? Could he be the grandson who received a bequest in the will of William Rogers who d 1808? I know the land of Thomas Hollenback [Lot 9] was near the Rogers land [Lot 13] on Patterson Creek, as was the land of David Jones [John & Peter bought lots 1 & 2], another of the witnesses to the will. I also know that Abraham Johnson [Lot 5] of Patterson's Creek migrated to Sullivan Co., IN, where Thomas Hollenback [Jr.] gave an affidavit for his Rev. War pension in 1833. A history of the Johnson family that I read said the Johnsons migrated to Hampshire Co. from Chester Co., PA. I have no independent documentation of this. I don't know exactly when Thomas Hollenback arrived there, nor do I know from where. I know he was there in 1775 when he provided provisions and pasturage for the Revolutionary effort. At least two of Thomas Hollenback's 14 children married into the Johnson family. I'd appreciate any information someone might have to offer about the John Rogers who married Sarah Hollenback, and/or their children.
