    1. [ROGERS] CANFIELD - ROGERS Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Ellen Brainard CANFIELD which was taken at the C. H. Howes Studio in Ithaca, New York. The photograph is dated Dec 17th 1894 with Ellen appearing to be in her teens or 20's at the time it was taken. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding Ellen and her family: Ellen Brainard CANFIELD was b. 31 Jul 1872 in Arlington, VT to parents Frank Neally CANFIELD (b. 31 Aug 1851 in Arlington, VT) and Clara Collins ROGERS (b. 22 Dec 1853 in NY). Ellen died 11 Jul 1939 and is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Arlington, VT. Census records provide the following information: 1900 census of Ithaca, NY: Ellen B. CANFIELD, age 27, born Jul 1872, born VT, parents born VT/NY, a Physical Training Instructor 1910 census of Ithaca, NY: Ellen B. CANFIELD, age 37, born VT, parents born VT/NY, a College Instructor 1920 census of Ithaca, NY: Ellen B. CANFIELD, age 47, born VT, parents born VT/NY, a Cornell University Teacher I am hoping to locate someone from this CANFIELD Family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of her family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

Author: kerrysccpl138 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.rogers/10776.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Bruce, My husband is Jimmie Don Henderson, son of Jimmie Lavern Henderson, who was son of Cecil Rogers Behring Henderson Allison. Cecil had one daughter, Frankie, with August Behring; and three sons, John Leroy, Jimmie Lavern, and Kenneth Carl with John Leroy Henderson. She had no children with John Allison. So, you and my husband, Jim, must be second cousins. Some things we have found: On Cecil Rogers' death certificate, her father,Charles Rogers, is listed as Bruce Rogers. ---Maybe at that time, whoever didn't know for sure and just guessed?? Charley might have been born in Atlanta, Ga.- per letter from Viola to Cecil dated Nov. 4, 1962. Also, letter states that Charles died 6 months before Viola was born. She was born May 6, 1909. In letter from Viola to Cecil, she also stated that "Mama told me she was married in Houston. ... Mama told me they were married under his right name which was David Rufus Wallace." ----Strange - but, Jim said he remembered Cecil saying several times that they were related to "Big Foot Wallace". ---- I can't find any documentation of this marriage with either name! According to the 1900 Bandera County, Texas census 2 J-Pct 5th June, Charles was listed as "Charley Rodgers, born in 1854". Per this census his mother and father were both born in Scotland. Charley's occupation was listed as 'Farmer". His wife was listed as Maggie and children as Leon (son age 10), Laville (son age 8), Cecil (daughter age 6), and Etta May (daughter age 2). According to the 1910 Bexar County, Texas census, Maggie was listed as head of household with Leon age 19, Melinda daughter-in-law age 19, Laville age 17, Edna M. daughter age 12, Thomas age 6, Bruce age 3, Ruth age 11 months, Ethel grandaughter 3 months old. - - I'm assuming Ethel is Leon and Melinda's daughter. On an affidavit signed by Cecil R. Allison, it stated that Margaret Smith's date of death was July 18, 1955. -- (Note: date on cemetery records was July 24, 1957.) In a notarized statement written on October 9, 1940, Carrie Hudson states: "Before me, William Cash, a Notary Public in and for Matagorda County, Texas, on this day personally appeared Carrie Hudson, a credible witness above the age of 21 who on her oath states as follows: That she has the family Bible of D. E. Smith, deceased, that she is the Step Grandaughter of the said D. E. Smith, and the Step-niece of Mrs. M. J. Smith of San Antonio, Texas, that in the family records of the family of D. E. Smith is shown the birth date of M. J. Smith, daughter of D. E. Smith, as follows: M. J. Smith was born Jan 1st, 1870, and that said family Bible has been handed down through the years, and recognized as the true family Bible of the D. E. Smith family. Witness my signature at Bay City, Texas this 9th day of October, A.D. 1940. Signed by Carrie Hudson - - -Do you know a Carrie Hudson?? I would love to get a copy of that Bible!- - - According to the 1870 Bandera County, Texas Census, Margaret, age 5/12 years old, was listed as a child of David and Maria Smith. According to the 1900 Bandera County, Texas census Margaret is listed as "Maggie". It states that she was born in Texas, her father was born in Georgia and her mother was born in England. According to the 1920 Bexar County, Texas census Maggie is listed as the wife of Pio C. Smith with her children listed as step-children of Pio (Talmage G. Rogers age 16, Bruce Rogers age 13, and Viola Rogers age 10). The location of Margaret's grave in San Fernando Cemetery II (746 Castroville Road, San Antonio, TX) is section 35, plot 10, grave 1. Her son Talmadge George Rogers is buried in the same grave (b. 1904, d. 11/26/1973). They are buried in a plot purchased by the Tronson family. The cemetery records had Margaret listed as a widow at the time of death. Her death certificate listed her residence as Rigby Nursing Home on 202 East Evergreen in San Antonio, TX. Cemetery records show that her burial plot was purchased by Joseph F. Tronson, who was her son-in-law (Viola Rogers' husband; Viola is Margaret's daughter by her first husband Charles Rogers). There was no permanent grave marker for Margaret or Talmadge. On 02/19/2010 the grave was located by cemetary workers and the original temporary marker was discovered buried in the mud. A marble headstone, with both Margaret and Talmadge's names inscribed, was purchased by Jimmie D. and Kerry A. Henderson for a permanent grave! marker. For Laville Rogers, I have: A WWI draft registration card dated June 25, 1917, lists his address as 230 Ferguson St. in San Antonio and his occupation as self employed blacksmith. He was listed as married. The 1920 Bexar County, Texas census lists a Laville Rogers as head of household, age 26, with a wife age 25, Sophia, and a son, Norman, age 4 and 4/12. This lists Laville's occupation as a house carpenter. For Viola, I have: Her first or second name may have been Ruth. She worked for the Telephone Co. and her husband worked for the railroad. Her last residence was in Del Rio, Val Verde County, Texas, USA. I don't have anything on your father or his family. I had been trying to find someone in the Tronson family, but have had no luck. I would appreciate any thing you can add - about your family or any other person in the family. Thanks, Kerry Henderson Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
