    3. Dear Pat, (regarding your posting below): Absalom Rogers was born on July 25, 1796 and died on May 18, 1885. He married Mildred McGehee (some have said McKee) on March 23, 1818 in Madison Co., AL. She was born June 21, 1794 and died on Jun 19, 1854. I have a list of children which does not include the Larkin Rogers you inquired about but I do feel there is a good chance that your Larkin is related to Absalom's family. This is one of the many reasons we are puttingn together a Rogers list for those having Rogers in Bedford, Rutherford, Lincoln Co., TN and Madison Co., AL. You would be more than welcome. Let me know. 1. [ROGERS] Colonel Greenberry LEE (RS-GA)
    2. Before Greenberry LEE became a Colonel in the GA militia during the RW (1776-1783) he came to Richmond Co., GA from SC according to a 1773 GA land grant of 100 acres. Three other LEEs gained Richmond Co., GA grants in the same general time frame. 1771 John LEE 500 acres 1773 Francis LEE 100 acres 1772 John LEE 100 acres Since these grants were given on the basis of adulthood and size of family John LEE of 1771 had a sizable family perhaps a wife and 7 children. The others appear to be single men at the time of the grant (100 acres). This could suggest that as the males of John LEE's family came of age they applied for grants. If this be the case, then there is the possibility that all these LEEs were related. Since Francis LEE resigned his grant and returned to NC, it is an indication that the family had originally come from NC. The major event that would precipitate the movement of the LEEs from NC to GA in the early 1770s was the NC Regulator Rebellion of 1771 when communities of Orange and Johnston Cos rose up to challenge the authority of the British Governor of NC. The severe repression of the local rebellion caused some families to move into the Quaker community of Wrightsboro, then Richmond Co., GA. The best documented family was that of the FEWs. Other families associated with the FEWs were the LEEs, HOWARDs and the ROGERS. The interrelationship of these families suggests that they knew each other before assembling in Richmond Co., NC. We know that the FEWs, ROGERS and the LEEs were in NC. The HOWARDs take a little imagination and the connection is the ORRICK brothers in GA who were half brothers to Margaret HOWARD who married John LEE in Harford Co.,MD in 1746. The FEWS were from Harford Co., MD also and came to Orange Co., NC in 1758 before moving on to Richmond Co., GA in 1771. The circumstantial evidence is there, but the documentation is weak. I'm looking for researchers interested in HOWARDs. LEEs, FEWs and ROGERS who were in NC and in GA by 1771 or soon after. Best regards, Hugh

    1. Re: [ROGERS] Rogers/Rodgers in Lincoln, Bedford, Rutherford Co., TN and Madis...
    2. Linda, I was so excited when I opened up your email, because Isaac has been our brickwall for several years. We do have some info that is reliable, but nothing to expand on. Edward Rogers, b. 15-2-1794, d, 17-07-1844, m. Phebe Chiles, 28-04-1819 in TN. The both died in and are buried in Chulahoma Cemetery, Madison County, Chulahoma, MS. We have found their gravesites. They are my husband's ggggrandparents. Washington Keyes Rogers, s/o Edward and Phebe,b. 15-02-1820 in Lincoln Co. TN [ some records say Madison Co, AL] d. 13-08-1899, m. Mary Weeks, b. 4- 03-1822 in TN. They both died in Thornton, Limestone Co, TX, and are buried in Cobb Cemetery. We have found their graves as well. They are his gggrandparents. Wash was their oldest of eight children. Phebe also had a daughter when they married. Their youngest child was a girl, and her descendents have the original family bible records written by Phebe. They have shared them with us, so we feel certain they are correct. We have also verified them with copies of legal documents. In the deaths section she has listed Ma[r]garet Rogers died September 28, 1820 in the 67th year of her age. [this would make her born in 1753] Isaac Rogers Sein [we assume this means Sr.] died July , 1832 in the 82nd year of his age. [this would make him born in [1750] Isaac Rogers Jenn [Jr. ?] died July 1, 1837. We have no written proof that Isaac and Magaret are Edward's parents, but it seems so logical that is why they are listed in the records. Do you have any info that will support this theory? When we first began searching for Edward's father, we thought it might be Absolom, but still feel he fits into the family. If we knew who all of Edward's siblings were, that would tell us a lot. Your Joseph and our Isaac are both listed as being born in 1750, so they might just be cousins. We have always thought Hugh and Larkin fit in there somewhere, because they were in the same area. You mentioned someone else thought Isaac's wife might be Margaret. Does that person have anything documented to support their thinking? If so, I would love to know what they have. What was the deposition about in connection with the Barfield Road? I am not familiar with the incident. One thing we have noticed in tracing our line, the same names have been repeated over and over. Up to now, we have been able to spot our decendents in the next generation by names we are familiar with. Have you noticed that in your direct line? I feel certain that the Lincoln Co, TN and the Madison Co, AL Rogers are the same. We have found identical records in both areas. It was common Indian territory until AL and TN become individual states. I hope I have not confused you in presenting this info. Hopefully somewhere it will begin to unravel, because I really believe there are answers here for all of us if we can just find a starting point. I live in northeast TX, so I am not really close to the original records, although we have made a few trips to that area researching. I have decided genealogy is a terminal disease, but isn't it fun....especially when you find something big. If we can connect your Joseph to our Isaac [I hope he is really ours] maybe we can get some solutions started. It may be lateral lines only, but they have to connect at some point. Hoping to hear from you soon, Sue Rogers sophiesue99@aol.com

I believe some of my Rogers may have lived in some or all of these places. My ancestor, Joseph Rogers, originated in Tennessee in Rutherford Co., and Bedford Co. (although he had also lived in Amelia Co., VA, Fairfield, SC, Fayette Co., KY, and Oglethorpe Co., GA. However, there are at least one or two other Joseph Rogers floating around during this time period and places--notably a Joseph Rogers who was born in 1788 in SC. (He married Nancy Mullings). According to early records, In Rutherford County, there were five Rogers working on the Barfield Road in 1808: James, Joseph, John, Isaac, and David. In 1813, a person was sent from Rutherford Co., TN to Madison Co., Mississippi Territory (today Madison Co., AL) to obtain a deposition from John Rogers and Isaac Rogers at the house of John Rogers. I believe this John and Isaac Rogers probably were 2 of the 5 working on the Barfield Road in RC five years earlier. In the 1820 Lincoln Co., TN census some of the Rogers enumerated were Absolom, Isaac, John H., Jones, Joseph, Spencer, and William Rogers. It appears that at least some of these men were involved in the above road-building crew and in the court deposition in Madison Co., AL (just across the state line from Lincoln Co., TN). How are these Rogers connected? Some believe that they could be children or grandchildren of the Joseph Rogers who was born in 1750 in Amelia Co., Va and in his later years moved to Rutherford and Bedford Counties. Others believe that all these Rogers are related to the Joseph Rogers who was born in 1788. One person states that Isaac Rogers may be the father of Absolam and Joseph Rogers (born 1788). Or could the Joseph Rogers (born 1750) be the father of many of these men--especially of Absalom, John, and Joseph (born 1788)? I have found evidence that there was a Isaac Rogers in Lincoln County who was married to Nellie (last name unknown) and that one of their sons was Absalom who married Mildred McGehee or McKee. But someone else says that Isaac's wife may have been Margaret. Are these Rogers in Lincoln County related to the Rogers in Madison Co., AL? I found some Rogers names in "Minute Books of the Superior Court of Law and Equity of Madison Co., MS Territory, 1810-1816": Benjamin B. Rogers, Isaac Rogers, James B. Rogers, John Rogers, Randolph Rogers, Robert L. Rogers, Robertson Rogers, James Rogers, Hugh Rogers, and John Rogers. In the Territorial Papers, Vol 5 (Jan 1809) (census)I found Larkin Rogers, Isaac Rogers, James D. Rogers, and Hugh Rogers. Do any of these Madison County Rogers connect with the Lincoln Co., TN and Bedford and Rutherford Co., TN Rogers? There is also a Isaac Rogers that had a son named Edward who married Phebe Chiles. Is this the same Isaac that is the son of Absolom Rogers and may be the son of Joseph Rogers, born 1788 in SC? If all interested persons in Lincoln Co. TN (and other counties) can all work together and combine our research, I think we can solve some of these questions. I will do whatever it takes to coordinate such an effort--all you have to do is ask. Please e-mail me (and post to this message board) your Rogers data.
