With regards to the original message posted below, if anyone discovers documentation as to the father of Anderson Rogers, let me know. I have an ancestor named Thomas Ro(d)gers b. about 1795, probably Buncombe Co. NC. I was thinking that Anderson (Andrew?) may be a brother to my Thomas. I also, think that David (b. about 1756)and Hannah Rodgers (m. 1782 Montgomery Co. VA) from Buncombe may be parents. Some of Thomas's possible siblings are thought to be Stephen, Jerimiah, Robert, Hugh, and John Sr. Jane Surnames: Rogers Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/EkDBAIB/4502.1.1.3 Message Board Post: What year range are we looking at with the people in your message? I believe his children were Jeremiah, Hannah, Martha, Thomas, Erwin, Delem, Stephen, Mary, Franklin, Sarah and Levi. Franklin was my ggrandfather. Do you recognize any of these names?
According to Jefferson County IL census records my ggrandfather, Nathaniel Rogers was born in Missouri. circa 1813. His father, as best we can determine was James Rogers, and they settled in what is now Jefferson County IL. We have many James, including my grandfather and my father; as well as William, including my ggrandfather and an uncle in our family. However we has been unable to actually trace the family any further and to any part of Missouri to date. There would appear to be a tie in with my Rogers family. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda Brown" <ltrentbrown@comcast.net> To: <ROGERS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 25, 2003 2:20 PM Subject: Re: [ROGERS] Rogers in Missouri > Hi Leo, you are right, West Virginia did not become a state until 1864 and > yes, some of my Rogers did live > in Greenbrair county. Hi Leo, you are right, West Virginia did not become a state until 1864 and yes, some of my Rogers did live in Greenbrair county. When I get home from my trip I'll look them up and get back to you. ROGERS. One of his brothers was named "Doc" Rogers, and this is how he is listed on the census too. Other siblings were Ushley, Kelton/Ambus, Reynolds, Ida and Octavia. Parents names were G.J. & Arminda. Are these possibly from the same family you are researching?
Dear Rogers List, I'm searching for information on Daniel Rogers born 1755 in Granville Co., NC. He was a Revolutionary War Veteran. He moved to Chester Co., SC and was there in 1800. Then moved to Christian Co., KY in 1809, Henry Co., TN in 1822 and died in the home of his son Wiley Rogers in Tippah Co., MS in 1849. I have found him on the census, but they were early enough that there were no names except head of the house. I have not found a Will for him yet. I know he had one son named Wiley, but would anyone happen to know anything about this Daniel Rogers and who his immediate family (wife, children, parents, etc.) would have been? Any information would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help. I have a James A. (Ancil) Rogers in that corner of MO also. He was born about 1830 in Sullivan County, TN - the son of Prudence Rogers and Daniel Stephens. In 1906, he applied on the Guion-Miller Rolls for membership in the Cherokee nation claiming his grandfather Ansel was 100% Cherokee. He was denied as no member of the family were on prior rolls nor did they ever live in Indian Territories. James A. married Elizabeth. He names his children in the Miller roll application - and the family can be found 1870 (Greene Co); 1880 (Christian) and beyond that Stone. Their children were: 1) Nancy Margaret b. 1865; Thomas Franklin Rogers b 1968 (I wonder if this is the same Thomas who can be later found in Greene Co., married to Mary Adella Shook??; 3) Samuel Rogers b. 1869; 4) William Henry Rogers b. 1875; Alice Rogers b. 1878 married Charles Henry -- one of her daughters Anna married a man named Eutsler; Martha E. Rogers (b. 1882 married John Curtis). Does anyone know this family? Gary

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/EkDBAIB/5697.1 Message Board Post: I recently became interested in the Spalding and Rogers circus and in the Floating Palace. I just found this write up of Dr. Spalding, his circus ventures and his partnerships with Charles J. Rogers. Charles Rogers is just mentioned in passing as "the English equestrian". There is some good information on the Floating Palace as well. I hope this helps. (My Rogers family was connected to New Orleans. If you have any Rogers family who lived in New Orleans before 1860, I would be interested in knowing about them.) http://xroads.virginia.edu/~MA02/amacker/circus_backup/ch_3.txt [exerpted from chapter 3 of a history of circuses (?) published on the web at the above address:] RIVER SHOWS In 1843, an Albany pharmacist named "Doc" Gilbert R. Spalding got hooked on the circus business by a bad debt. He soon earned a considerable name for himself up and down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers with various partners and circuses for over twenty years. He was an important, inventive risk-taker, generally credited with a lot of firsts in the circus business, many of which may be reliable records. He is said to have invented the quarter pole, to keep the canvas off the heads of his audiences. He is also credited with developing the efficient jack-and-stringer type of seating arrangement which survives in small circuses to this day. His was the first circus to use a mechanical precursor to the calliope, and the first to convert from candles and oil lamps to gaslight. In 1853, he was among the first to experiment with railroad travel: his "Railroad Circus and Crystal Palace" exhibited in Detroit, although probably only with a few stock cars. Three years later he ordered nine specially-built railroad cars for his new Spaulding & Rogers Railroad Circus, which carried no menageries or parade equipment. The cars had adjustable axles and may or may not have been designed to actually drive off the tracks to a circus lot, but this isn't really clear. In any case, they were used for only one season, before Spalding evidently decided that railroad circuses were not yet practical. Spalding's most famous enterprise was the Floating Palace, which he undertook in partnership with the English equestrian, Charles Rogers. From 1852 until the Civil War made them stop, this luxurious barge visited ports all along the Mississippi and Ohio, and usually wintered in New Orleans. The barge had only a four foot draft, but it contained a full 42 foot circus ring, and could seat perhaps as many as 2,400 spectators. The menagerie was carried on the tow boat, one of two magnificent show boats owned by Spalding, the Banjo and the James Raymond, on which other performances were also presented. They ranged from minstrel shows to dramatic performances, from Shakespeare to the temperance comedy, Ten Nights in a Bar Room.
Where was your Carrie from ? I don't have my records in front of me but I think I have one down in Washington County, VA about that time ... Gary

Pat Holloway Pat: George is certainly a family name, and I show a ton of them in my family's name index, though I do not find Jane Courtney, and this probably relates to this George being in a collateral family line. The fact that there is only one t on the end of Pettitt is a good indicator of this. Generally, I have found that the Pettits who are on the Cherokee rolls are cousins, through the marriage of Pettitt and a Hilderbrand. The Hilderbrands were wealthy Cherokees, and this particular cousin stayed behind during the removal, allowing his wife and kids to be removed in 1838. He later committed suicide. So, guess the bottom line is that there is probably a connections, but not enough infrrmation currently to know for certain. Fawn
