Shirley was the daughter of Gertrude Broas and Herbert (?) Rogers. Shirley's mother, Gertrude, was a sister to my grandfather, Floyd Broas. Gertrude married a 2nd time to Harry Hornbeck and had 2 more children, Harry Jr. and Ruth Ann. I believe Shirley married a Dennis Russell and had several children. Most of the family might still be in the Poughkeepsie area. I would love to communicate with anyone connected to this family. Thank you. ~ Nancy Coleman-Bello `

    1. [ROGERS] Zylpha Rogers
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Rogers, Moody, Gardner Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/EkDBAIB/5931 Message Board Post: I am looking for information on Zylpha Rogers Moody Gardner. According to oral information I have collected, she was born 1855 in Neosho, MO, or perhaps TN. She married Henry Moody ca. 1871/2 in Ft. Smith, AR. They had, I think, 8 children, the first being Walter Moody. Henry Moody died ca. 1885 when a wagonload of firewood overturned. He was an orphan living since the Civil War with Mumford Pelley on a dairy farm in Massard, AR (a couple miles east of Ft. Smith). She remarried Walter Gardner and they had three or four more children. She died in 1935 and is buried in Barling Cemetery. Her grave marker gives birth date 1852, but the obit shows age 80 (b. 1855). I have been told for at least fifty years that her father was John Rogers, but a certain mythology has grown up around him. Some of her grandchildren insisted he lived in Ft. Smith, and others that he lived in Westville, OIT. Her entry on the 1880 census shows her age as 24 and that she was born in Mo. Henry's birthplace is also MO on that census, but other sources indicate KS, Ft. Gibson, "near Ft. Gibson in IT", and intriguingly "Indian Country west of the Arkansas." I feel that no grandchild knew for sure where she was born. Recently I did a search on the entire 1870 census for "Zylpha Rogers" and found one intriguing entry in Vermilion, IN. The new Zylpha was 14 in 1870 (remember that she was 24 in 1880 and 80 in 1935). She is living with Isaac Rogers and Sophia Rogers and with a sister (?) Sarah aged 19. The name/age coincidence is too strong to ignore, especially when I have been searching records for her since 1970 and found nothing before 1880. Is it possible that her father's name was Isaac, not John? Her grandchildren were cetain of the John, but no one knew her mother's name. Is it possible that Isaac's middle name was John and he went by that? Or that Isaac and Sophia were grandparents or and aunt and uncle? Did she run away at age 15 to marry a 24 year old orphan sharecropper? I would appreciate any information on Zylpha Rogers or on her first Husband, Henry. I would also appreciate any information on the new Zylpha that would show she is NOT my gt-gt-grandmother so that I can go on with my fruitless research on the real Zylpha.

I am specifically trying to find information on Henry Rogers whose children were John, Stark, Gilliam, Henry, & Mary Polly. He seems to have fell off the face of the earth. They are supposed to have some Cherokee blood & by looking at their migration pattern that seems entirely possible.
