    1. Re: [ROGERS] John & Joseph Rogers
    2. Carolyn Bryant
    3. Thanks for all the information. I don't know where Allen P. Rogers fits in all of this, but I hope to find something. My great-grandmother was Cleopatra Rogers born 1854 in Ala. Her father was Allen P. Rogers found in the 1860 Census of Franklin Co., Ala., born 1804 NC. She was 6 years old at this time. According to census he was married within the year to Elizabeth ????. His first wife ???? His youngest child was 1 year old. Unless census is wrong, which is possible. His children in 1860 are: Margaret, 17; Melonta, 15; William D.,12; Lucinda, 10; John C. 8; Cleopatra, 6; Sarah J., 4; Modenia, 2; Manda B., 1; all born in Ala. In 1865, Price Deverlin Rogers or Deverlin Price Rogers was born so I am guessing that probably the P. in Allen name stands for Price???? I found an 1810 census of Rutherford Co., NC. with an Allen Rogers as head of household and wife with two sons under 10 years of age. One of these sons could be my Allen. I don't know anything else other that this. Thanks for all the information and any additional information will be greatly appreciated. Nancy Carolyn [email protected] wrote: I am just coming into this conversation, and need to study everything that has already been written. But I wonder if I may have a clue to the missing piece to this puzzle of Allen P. Rogers. I am a direct descendant of Joseph Rogers born in about 1694 in Surry County. VA. He and his wife (probably Mary Fargeson, but there is some disagreement on that) had at least 10 children. I am the direct descendent of their son Aaron (b. 1726 in Surry Co., VA d. 1780 in Wake County, NC). Joseph and his wife's youngest son was Michael Rogers (b.1738 d.1797 in Wake County, NC). Michael married Celia Boykin (1745-1820) and had at least 10 children. One of these children was an Allen Rogers. This Allen Rogers lived most of his life in Wake County, NC and is buried at Wake Crossroads (formerly Rogers Crossroads). I don't have a date of birth, but he would have been born before 1804. He was quite well known in North Carolina, serving as a colonel in the War of 1812 and being elected to the state senate. He even entertained French General Lafayette in 1825! He left numerous written records but I cannot document his children. There is Col. Allen Rogers will, August Term 1848, Recorded in book B.B. Pages 384 which names "my two sisters, Rebeca (sic) and Sarah Rogers" as sole heirs. But there is also a will for Allen Rogers Sr. dated Feb. 1, 1839, Wake County. Also, the 1860 will of Benjamin Rogers (husband of Ann D. Rogers) mentions a Henrietta M. Rogers, "daughter of my deceased nephew Allen Rogers" and says she has lived with him for a number of years. All this is to say that I am really wondering if the Allen Rogers born in 1804 is one of these Wake County men, or one of their sons. There are estate papers that list one of these men as the father of eight children, including an "Allen Jr." Or am I just muddying the water??? 3. Carolyn WE have some of the southern's sorted out at www.rootsweb.com/~tnpolk2 RECORDS --Scroll down to "C" to biographies of folks involved with Cherokee People. John Rogers Sr. was a white man involved with the Cherokee. His Cherokee 'wife' was Elizabeth Emory. Eliz was the dtr of William Emory and Susannah Grant, dtr of Ludovic Grant and Eugihooti. John Sr. and Elizabeth ran a trading post and ferry at Old Hiwassee town which is just west of the intersection of Hwy 411 and the Hiwassee River in Polk Co TN. This is where it gets a bit complicated. Elizabeth Emory's first husband was trader Robert Dew (Dewes). Their dtr was Jennie. After Elizabeth, the elder John Rogers took up with Jennie Dew/Due. Their child was Talahina/Diana Rogers. John Rogers, Jr. was the son of John Sr by his white wife in Virginia. He was spouse of Jennie Due and father of Talahina Rogers. John Jr is recorded a few times having done business in the early 1800's in McMinn County, TN before1824. Sam Houston was 'adopted' by Chief John Jolly who originally lived in the Tellico village then later on Hiwassee Island at the mouth of the Hiwassee River where it enters the Tennessee River. Sam was originally from Blount County and had spent some time at Tellico with Jolly. He'd apparently encountered Talahina/Diana and had a relationship with her during that time. Jolly's brother was Tahlonteeskee. Tahlonteeskee had left this area in 1809 with a group of several hundred Cherokee which became known as the "Old Settlers". In 1817, John Jolly left with another group of people. He'd learned that Tahlonteeskee had passed and apparently went there as leader of the Old Settlers. He became chief there in Arkansas in 1817. >From 1812 to 1818, Sam Houston was involved with the War of 1812 and was at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. He was Cherokee Indian Agent until he resigned in 1818 at Fort Strother, Alabama. In 1824, John Roger, Jr. left Cherokee Nation east for Arkansas. He is credited for founding Fort Smith in Arkansas. I don't know if Diana was with the 1817 party or the 1824 party. At some point I do know that Sam Houston stayed with his adopted father, John Jolly and Diana Rogers for awhile. He went to Texas to fight in the Mexican wars there after this time. 3. Hi Joyce, I have been reading all the information about Rogers' families, and land purchases in NC. My late husband, Ralph Rogers Wheeler, b. 11/1/1917, d. 1/27/2004, was gggrandson of Thomas Rogers, b. ca 1770 in Bertie Co, NC, m. Jane Hampton in Bertie Co, NC. Thomas Rogers was in 1790 U.S. Census, for Spartenburg, SC, as was Robert Rogers, possibly a brother, then to Bedford Co, TN, probably after 1806, with known children Nancy, Richard Hampton, Thomas, William, and Minnie. While in Bedford Co, Nancy married John McGuire, and they moved to Fayette or Tuscaloosa Co, AL with Thomas and the rest of the family. They were already in AL in 1819 when it became a state. I have lots of information about Rogers' families, most which I got on the internet, and can not authenticate most of it. I have some I received from you several years ago. I'll have to read back through all the information and see is there is any mention of connection to Joseph Rogers. There was information about Robert and Thomas \, brothers, both born in Bertie Co, being mentioned in a will and about owning land on Bear Creek. I'll have to locate it again. 2. Linda & Joyce, I've emailed with Linda a couple of years ago about my husbands' Rogers line.? We couldn't come up with a connection, but thought I'd send anyway.? Who knows when someone connected to the family might have joined and have some insight as to if this information is correct or not. Nathaniel Rogers was born July 1767 in Kent Co., Maryland, married Selah/Celey.? I have the Revolutionary War papers for him. Children: 1. Elijah Rogers, b. abt. 1805 in Union District, SC, married Mary Green, b. between 1806-1810 2. John Rogers, b. bet. 1788-1791 in SC, d. after 1870, married Jane ?, b. bet. 1800-1805 in?? ??? ??? Georgia, d. after 1870 3. Nathaniel Rogers, b. abt. 1808 4. Elizabeth Rogers, no dates, married a Bogan 5. Abigail Rogers, no dates, married a Steen 6. Nancy Rogers, no dates, married a Reeder All 3 of the daughters supposedly married men from the Union District area, not sure about Nathaniel. ________________________________________________________________________ AOL now offers free email to everyone. 1. Re: [ROGERS] John & Joseph Rogers
    2. I don't know if this is would be any help. However, I just read a historical novel called The Raven and His Bride about Sam Houston. The chief and brothers of the Cherokee tribe he lived with for many years and kept contact with for this lifetime were of the surname Rogers. I am a Rogers descendent and when I read this in the book it surprised me and embedded itself in my brain. The book is by Elizabeth Crook of Austin. She has a website if you wanted to ask a question of her. In a message dated 6/11/2007 10:08:21 A.M. Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Thanks for reply. 2. Joyce, I have nothing on your line...unless it includes a JEFFERSON C. ROGERS, born in 1820 somewhere in TN. He was in Bledsoe Co. in 1850, married to a NANCY ADALINE CARDER. Do any of these names figure in your line? I have no parents for Jefferson, but was told it was William Rogers. 1. Re: [ROGERS] Rogers in 1880 Census
    2. Mary L Hall
    3. Joyce, I have hit a brick wall on my Rodger's (also spelled "Rogers") line. James J. Rodgers was born in South Carolina in 1817. About 1841, he married Rachel Sims in Laurens County, SC. Three of their children were born in Laurens County: Drue Sims (yes, spelled this way and sometimes "Drury"); Mary E.; and James William. They moved to Pontotoc County, MS in between 1847-1848 with a church group where the rest of their children were born: Richard Taylor (my ggrandfather) b. 1848; Sarah M.; Caroline Matelda; Rachel C.; Phoebe P.; Nancy F.; and Drucilla C. were the other children. James J. died in the Civil War in 1865. Richard Taylor married Margaret Hill and some of her brothers and James William were in Milam County, Texas in the 1900 census having arrived there between 1891 and 1900. The rest of the Rodgers amd Hill families stayed in Mississippi. I have lots of information on Rachel Sims' line, but I have not been able to connect any of the Rodgers in South Carolina with my James J. You have mentioned "Richard Rogers" in some of your e-mails and it caught my attention because I've always wondered where the name"Richard" came from. There are lots of James and Williams but not that many Richards. I'd appreciate your input if you happen to see a link to my James J. 1. [ROGERS] John & Joseph Rogers
    2. My cousins and I are attempting to separate the many different Rogers families of colonial Virginia during the time period of the first half of the 1700's. We descend from John Rogers (born abt 1720/25 and died 1790 in Fairfield, SC- according to his son Joseph's Rev. War pension application) John was in Amelia between 1748 and 1750. We do not believe he stayed in Amelia County, VA very long. Complicating this search is the fact that the name John Rogers was a very common one during the 1700's especially in Virginia. According to John's 1790 will in Fairfield, his children were: William, Richard, Thomas, James, Joseph, Henry, Frances and Jane. In addition we are searching for anyone with Rogers or Rodgers connections in Lincoln Co., TN, Bedford Co., Rutherford Co., TN, or Madison Co., AL. We believe some of our Rogers may have lived in some or all of these places. Our ancestor, Joseph Rogers, originated in Tennessee in Rutherford Co., and Bedford Co. (although he had also lived in Amelia Co., VA, Fairfield, SC, Fayette Co., KY, and Oglethorpe Co., GA. However, there are at least one or two other Joseph Rogers floating around during this time period and places--notably a Joseph Rogers who was born in 1788 in SC. (He married Nancy Mullings). According to early records, In Rutherford County, there were five Rogers working on the Barfield Road in 1808: James, Joseph, John, Isaac, and David. In 1813, a person was sent from Rutherford Co., TN to Madison Co., Mississippi Territory (today Madison Co., AL) to obtain a deposition from John Rogers and Isaac Rogers at the house of John Rogers. I believe this John and Isaac Rogers probably were 2 of the 5 working on the Barfield Road in RC five years earlier. In the 1820 Lincoln Co., TN census some of the Rogers enumerated were Absolom, Isaac, John H., Jones, Joseph, Spencer, and William Rogers. It appears that at least some of these men were involved in the above road-building crew and in the court deposition in Madison Co., AL (just across the state line from Lincoln Co., TN). How are these Rogers connected? Some believe that they could be children or grandchildren of the Joseph Rogers who was born in 1750 in Amelia Co., Va and in his later years moved to Rutherford and Bedford Counties. Others believe that all these Rogers are related to the Joseph Rogers who was born in 1788. One person states that Isaac Rogers may be the father of Absolam and Joseph Rogers (born 1788). Or could the Joseph Rogers (born 1750) be the father of many of these men--especially of Absalom, John, and Joseph (born 1788)? Any direction or help by Rogers researchers reading this in locating or separating the many Rogers names would be much appreciated. We would be very happy to share information. 1. [ROGERS] Rogers and Betrice Timms
    2. The following information is the reason I have searched all ends of the earth for BEATRICE TIMMS. I believe that Joseph possibly left a child in SC and this lady was related to those Rogers lines. Please contact me if you have any information about Beatrice and/or Joseph. The name James Timms is a tantalizing clue in the SC Land Grants in the 1700's. Thank you very much in advance for your time and help. [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) While I was researching the files of Joseph Rogers(my g-g-g--g-g-g-g-grandfather) in the South Carolina archives, I found a letter written 13 June 1923 by BEATRICE TIMMS in which she stated that she was applying for membership in the DAR on her ancestor Joseph Rogers. She listed some dates and I realized that this is also my ancestor. Joseph's service was in South Carolina but he received his pension in Bedford County, Tennessee. I have been searching for descendants of Joseph and I feel this seems to be a vital clue but I have no information who Beatrice Timms descends from because I have not been able to identify all of Joseph's children. Any information would be very much appreciated and if you relate to this line I would be happy to share information with you. Thank you very much!!! ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    2. Once again using the SC Land Archives and the dates 1750-1800 my cousins and myself have found the following postings and would really like to share information with anyone who can relate to these families. All we know is Thomas died after 1790 because he is listed in his father's(John) will. Could Thomas have married into any of these families?
