My mother was Mary Rogers from Buckatunna Ms. Her grandfather was Alonzo L. Rogers (died 1944). He owned a general store in Buckatunna. His father was William J. Rogers from Wayne County. I do not know the father of William. My mother (Mary) told me Jimmie was a cousin, and that he came to the house in Buckatunna. Alonzo also told my uncle that Jimmie stayed at the house many times. My mother Mary is 91, but her memory is deteriorating. My uncle has done extensive searching but cannot find the link to Jimmie Rodgers. Author: butchrose Surnames: ROGERS, ROCHA Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.rogers/10081.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: A few notes: The proper spelling is Terceira not Terceiro ... third island in the Azores. Mauricia Severina/Zeverina this is the first and second name of the wife of Jose P Rocha. It is not usual for a Portuguese female to be known by a last name but as either "daughter of" or "wife of" or "widow of." The differnce between the Z and S is that the Z is the older usage, the S more common by 1900. The 1893 date is when Severina re-entered the US for the 2d time with her two children. She was 1st in USA sometime before DEC 1875 whgen she gave birth in Boston, MA, USA to her son Joseph ROGERS. Since Jose P Da Rocha was a sailor, it is likely that he made multiple trips to the Azores and may have married Mauricia in Faial and brought her to USA himself. Another poster (*Thank you SO much*) has emailed me and traced the Rogers connection to the following individuals: Jose da Rocha Born: June 1854 Terceiro, Azores Date of arrival in the US: 1871 Mauricia Severina Zepheima Born: March 1858 Faial Azores Date of arrival: 1893 (and there is a manifest that she signed via New York Passenger lists). Now I hope to trace these two individuals to their origins in the Azores. Anyone who has knowledge of them, I would so appreciate any heads up or clues. Thanks again. 1. [ROGERS] ROGERS Joseph and Maurie (Azores to East Boston, Mass.)
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: roseisabelle Surnames: Rogers, Emery, Freethy, Lyons, Mathison Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.rogers/10081/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am trying to find information about JOSEPH P. and MAURIE ROGERS. Any information or leads you could provide would be very appreciated. My great great grandparents: JOSEPH P. ROGERS born: June 1854, Terceiro, Azores His arrival date is variously listed on U.S. census records as 1871 or 1872, and naturalization as 1889 or 1890. MAURIE ROGERS born: about 1859, Fayal, Azores Her arrival date is listed in the 1910 U.S. census as 1865, but then on the 1920 census she lists an arrival date of 1871 and a naturalization date of 1889. On the 1930 census, arrival date = 1975 and it says that she and Joseph were never naturalized. Their daughter, who is my great grandmother: ISABEL ROGERS [EMERY] FREETHY born: August 1891, possibly in Terceiro Azores and died about 9 Feb 1962 in East Boston, Mass. Isabel has two siblings: JOSEPH P. Born: Dec. 1875 in Massachusetts. He was a stationer who at one time worked at the YMCA. On his WWI draft registration card it says that he fractured his back and has a palsy. MARY O.: Born Nov. 1884 in Mass. She married EDWARD LYONS (1907 - ) who was a motion picture projectionist, and had at least two children, EDWARD(1907- ) and FLOYD(1913). The 1920 census places this family in Wilmington with her under the name "OLIVE LYONS" (I'm pretty sure this is her but not 100% positive). Isabel's daughter (my grandmother): THELMA [Rogers] [Emery] Mathison born: 9 Feb, 1913, Boston Mass death: 13 August 1996, Boston MA Lived in East Boston, Mass Married ANDREW MATHISON (1908-1967) of Norwegian heritage Four Children: DONALD (1936-2001), CLAIRE (abt 1942- ), GARY (abt. 1949 - ), and Joyce (1944-) [my mother]. Any clues you can provide would be most appreciated. The "ROGERS" name is probably a name change -- possibly from RODRIGUES but there unfortunately is no surviving documentation of this. I lost it. >Now I find him in my list as son of Samuel Lufkin Rogers b. 1832 in >Freeport, ME who later moved to SC and IL. Any leads to either of these >would be greatly appreciated. link: <http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/rogers/1998-05/0895763416> William Maine Rogers is my great-grandfather. His father Samuel L. can be found in the 1880 census for Rantoul, IL (and possibly 1870). Based on the above post I went through the Rogers (and Lufkins) of Freeport, ME from 1790-1860. A "Saml Rogers" is found there in 1850. For the benefit of any Rogers or Lufkin families from Freeport, I have put together an analysis of those families insofar as I can determine from the census accounts. It can be found here: <http://genealogy.friarwire.net/> It is set up as a PDF (about 500k) on tabloid size paper (but you can "fit to printable area" and get a decent rendering on letter size paper). Please see the accompanying Read Me for explanation of how to read it. The above e-mail address is dead, but if Ms. Brown is still out there, do get in touch with me. Sincerely, fr. C.
