    3. Found this blurb re: the skull and crossbones on grave markers: "......signifying not that the inhabitant of the grave was a pirate, but rather serving as a reminder in an illiterate age that death is inevitable for everyone." Sandra -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Carol Rogers Sent: Thursday, October 25, 2007 9:01 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ROGERS] GABRIEL, JEREMIAH, THOMAS, JOSEPH ROGERS Clyde, Where did you find this information on slave trade? I've like to read more about it as I've never seen anything written on it. In a book I got from the library on the burials in Newport, there is a listing for a Capt Jonathan who died 9 Jun 1794 at 76 yrs. His wife was Mary who died 13 Feb 1800 at age 84yrs. Priscilla, their eldest daughter, died at 26yrs on 4 Jul 1772 and another daughter, Abigail, died at 15yrs on 21 Dec 1762. Then there was mention of a Capt William & Sarah with deaths of four of their children: Joseph d. 22 Jul 1761 age 12mo 16d Martha d 3 Oct 1756 at 13mo 12d Sanford d. 30 Aug 1764 at 7mo 8d Martha d. 12 Oct 1760 at 1yr 2mo There was mention of a William, merch, dying 1 Oct 1772 at age 63yrs with 2 sets of crossed arrows. Under that is the listing of Abigail, wife of William, who died 4 Mar 1747/48 at 41yrs. Under her is listed Sarah, widow of William who died 12 May 1776 at 53yrs. What does it mean when someone has a skull and crossbones on their tombstone? There were some Rogers listed in records as "Negroes" - please excuse that term as I'm just listing a fact. So perhaps they were slaves? However, there is no mention as such. I saw it in som church records and then in a book that had Barre marriages, but that was in Massachusetts, I believe. In Newport marriages there is listed Samuel, of John, and Lydia Holmes, of Capt. Jonathan, m. 31 Jan 1705/6. in the "History of Fair Haven, Vermont", it reads: "Beriah Rogers ... m. Miss Achsah Roberts, of Queensbury, N.Y., December, 20, 1798. She was a daughter of Capt. Ezekiel Roberts, a hero of the Revolution, and died in December, 1832, having had ten chidlren." In Abstracts of Wills in "Genealogies of Rhode Island Families, Vol. II" for the town of Middletown, R.I., is the mention of Capt. Samuel Rogers with daughter Elizabeth Smith (sons Elisha and Edward Smith), sons John, Joseph, Jonathan and Samuel Rogers, and grandsons through son Joseph, Samuel and Peleg. Will was dated 23 Jun 1750. So this explains some of the Captains of Rhode Island. 3. Hi Clyde, Someone sent me the whole family line of the earlier Rogers in Rhode Island. I see on the one family page where your late wife descended from. However, so I've been told .... that they've pretty much decided that the James in Rhode Island wasn't the one who came over on the Mayflower. There were two James Rogers at the time. The other had descendants that moved to Connecticut and that is the line that I've been told descends from the Mayflower emigrant. How it was explained to me that there is documentation on both James as having leading rolls in their towns, but two different towns. So it was felt that these two could not have been the same person. For my own part, the Jeremiah that was born in 1861 in Newport and moved to New York around Lyons and then to Brandon, VT, has never had parents identified anyplace to my knowledge. Therefore, that's my brick wall as I can't even tie him to the family line you described. For all I know, his mother could have been visiting someone in Brandon when she gave birth to him - unlikely, but still a possibility. I may never know. But I'm still going to check out any leads. My late wife was a descendant of JEREMIAH who was a son of THOMAS & SARAH. THOMAS was a son of JAMES & MARY. This JAMES was the first of the ROGERS into Newport. This JEREMIAH had sons JEREMIAH, ISAAC and THOMAS. ISAAC was I believe my late wife JOYCE'S ancestor. He was the father of ISAAC who died 1846 at Adams, Jefferson County, New York. I have never been able to prove the connection between the two ISAACS,but I believe this is right. I have lots of info on the descendants of ISAAC the son & RHODA CHASE his wife and have 2 other s who are actively working on the line. Clyde----- Original Message ----- From: Carol Rogers<mailto:[email protected]> To: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Sent: Monday, October 22, 2007 12:34 PM Subject: [ROGERS] ROGERS in Rhode Island, New York, and Vermont Dorothy, Please tell me where you got your information from on Gabriel Rogers from Palmyra, New York. I am VERY interested! I've been working on my husband's ROGERS line of descendants from a Jeremiah Rogers who was born in Newport, Newport, Rhode Island, in 1761 to parents I've yet to confirm. He is in the 1790 census there and then left the state to what I believe was the Lyons, NY, area. I say this because he had two sons, Thomas and George, confirmed in probate records in VT. Thomas had children that are listed in Vermont as born in Lyons, NY. I've always wondered why the family traveled all way to upstate New York, then ended up in Vermont. Jeremiah lost his first wife somewhere along the line between Rhode Island and Vermont, and is found in Revolutionary War records leaving a pension to his widow, Abigail McHerd, about ten years or so after his recorded death in 1837 in Brandon. There is a marriage on Nov 1, 1807 in Springfield, Windsor, Vermont, of a Jeremiah Rogers of Brandon to Sybil Latham - which I've also wondered about as the only Jeremiah in Brandon at the time was this same one from Newport, Rhode Island. Jeremiah shows up in land records in Brandon, VT, in 1806, and then in census there in 1810 & 1820. Thomas didn't show up there until 1820 census with a line of children. Then apparently his first wife died and he married Leah Churchill for which that information has been listed on RootsWeb, and I understand there is a Churchill Family Tree record with such info as well. I haven't been able to find where George was in 1820, but he had a son born in 1821 that was listed on various records as having been born in Chester, Brandon, or Barnard. Then he was living next door to Thomas in Brandon in 1830. George had 6 children born between 1812 and 1824, all in Vermont. Even though I have an internet-listed birthdate for George M. on 29 May 1790 in Brandon, in the 1860 census he is listed in Bethel, VT, living with wife and son's family at age 72 and born in Rhode Island. In 1850 he was in Brandon and listed as born in Vermont, which might be where this internet source got the presumption that he was born in Brandon as he was living there in 1830 census as well. So I've speculated (which is a dangerous thing to do in genealogy, I realize)that Jeremiah and family were traveling from Rhode Island to upstate New York sometime around 1800 census as I've never been able to find him anywhere, so he might not have had an established residence at the time. Somewhere in the stacks of Rogers info I've collected, I have copies of vitals for Rogers living in the Lyons/Palmyra area, but I've never been able to find Thomas' children's birth records, nor have I ever found signs that they were definitely living in New York from any records there. What I have on Thomas through his first wife, Mary Ester Davis, is four children, first three born in Lyons, NY, and the youngest was Lewis C. Rogers born in Brandon, VT, in 1819. The one prior to him was Fanny Estey born in Lyons in 1818. So Thomas and family moved to Brandon somewhere between June, 1818, and August, 1819. The oldest son, Jeremiah (labeled "2nd" in VT records) was born in Lyons in 1814. Between Jeremiah 2nd and Fanny is a missing female born between 1815 and 1817, also presumed to have been born in New York as well, though living in Brandon for the 1820 census. 3. Dorothy, I apologize for not getting back with you sooner, but I've been sorting through all the accumulation of notes, copies, census, and you name it on Rogers that I've gathered over the last few years and finally finished organizing everything in about 20 different files. Since then I found another stack of things to go through. ROGERS, Rogers, Rogers .... they're all over the place! Thank you for all the info you sent. That does help me some with your reference to, "In 1792 there was a contingent of settlers from Rhode Island who settled in Palmyra. Perhaps JEREMIAH was among that group." I agree. I did a quick look through everything I have and didn't find even one Gabriel. However, right now I can't find my notes and copies I made of the Lyons/Palmyra films. I did have some transcribed vital records, but as I recall, most people didn't have parents listed. Did Erastus always live in Sodus? That's such an unusual name that I recognized it from a couple of Vermont records. What I find interesting is that Suffolk Co., NY, was a little ways from Newport. Yet Rogers from both areas ended up in the same remote area of Lyons/Palmyra, NY. My best bet is to check out the William Rogers family that arrive in 1792. My Jeremiah was born in 1761. In 1776 he enlisted in the Revolutionary War. If he had brothers, perhaps they did too. I'll look at this more tomorrow. 3. Now, now, don't get your shorts all twisted up about a Rogers sea captain...'tis true 'tis true..... With that said.......please remind me of this message in mid-December when I am home for the holidays as all such information is in paper files at home and I'm on the lap-top in beautiful Sun City AZ visiting the Grand-chiles and their chillens..... This old Hal is 77 years old next month and has paper files from his Great Aunts/Grandmother all of whom were born in the 1870's. When I became interested in genealogy some years ago my Mother (1901-1988) gave me a folder with some Rogers data from my Grandmother, 1877-1954, that she obtained from a cousin of hers concerning the Bush lineage.....the folder had a note on it to wit: "Save for Williams Children as someday they may be interested in family history!"....My Father was William, 1902-1986....and the folder was dated around 1927...I was born of course in 1930 and was I ever interested......... Anyway, besides what this Cousin of Granny's knew of the family, she had gathered articles out of the newspaper ca 1920's about any Rogers she happened to see....among the articles is the story about the ship captain.....most of the articles did not provide a genealogical view but were rather generic in nature.....things like "Some notable Rogers in America" or "Famous Rogers in Britain before 1800".......Nothing to tie one to a specific family.......But remind me please and I'll jot you an e-mail with the good Captains data.... 3. There must be someone out there that has information regarding JOSEPH M. ROGERS. Jan Tripp, of the Washtenaw County Genealogical Society did research for me regarding JOSEPH and sent the following. JOSEPH was born in Palmyra, Wayne County, New York in 1805. He married JULIA SHEFFIELD (dau. of CHRISTOPHER SHEFFIELD and MARY MURPHY), born Saratoga Springs, NY. JULIA and JOSEPH were married in Lyons, NY on October 6, 1836 at the Lyons Presbyterian Church. Witnesses were Robert Ennis and Abel Lyman. GABRIEL ROGERS was a trustee of the Lyons Presbyterian Church from about 1813 to 1818. JOSEPH AND JULIA were in Michigan by 1844 where JOSEPH had grist mills. He was joined by his brother (possibly twin) THOMAS H. ROGERS and they possibly had mills together. They lived in Geddesburg, now a part of Ann Arbor, Michigan. At the wedding of one of JOSEPH'S children, a WILLIAM H. ROGERS was a guest from California. (another brother??) JOSEPH died in 1873-1883. JULIA died in 1904. Children of JULIA and JOSEPH: EMMA, b. 1839 in Lyons, New York, HARRIET, b. 1842 in New York, THEODORE, b. 1846 in Michigan, HELEN, b. 1846 in Michigan, CLARA, b, 1848, Geddesburg, Michigan, GEORGINA B. 1851, JOSEPH MILES, b. 1853, MARK GEORGE, B. 1856. Hopefully, someone may have some clues as to the parentage of Joseph. Is it Gabriel? Thanks, Dorothy Hagerty

    3. Hi Dorothy, I have a will from "Collections of Historical Society-Abstracts of Wills Vol 1" that has will of Obadiah Rogers of Southampton, Suffolk Co NY in which he mentions grandson Jeremiah and also grandson Gabriel, "son of my deceased son James" along with his sisters Millisunt and Ruth. Dated 1782, proved 1784. Any help? Gabriel not a common name in Rogers line I believe. 3. Hi Carol, These Rogers could drive one crazy!! The chase, however, is part of the fun. JOSEPH ROGERS, born in Palmyra, 1805, is the person I'm after. He married JULIA SHEFFIELD in Lyons in 1836. He was a miller in Michigan and possibly had a twin brother, THOMAS. I gave up trying to find his father and hired Marjory Allen Perez in Lyons, NY to do some research for me. She found GABRIEL, thinking he might be Joseph's father. I also have some history books of Wayne County where GABRIEL is mentioned. I've looked for a JEREMIAH, but have not found him. A couple of these books have no index, so it's tedious to try and find individual names. I'll keep him in mind. In 1792 there was a contingent of settlers from Rhode Island who settled in Palmyra. Perhaps JEREMIAH was among that group. It always amazes me how these people moved around. GABRIEL had sons, BARTLETT, , THOMAS, JAMES and ERASTUS - GABRIEL was born in Southampton, Suffolk Co., NY on 20 April 1776 and died 4 August 1847 in South Sodus, Wayne Co. NY. I Gabriel is part of your heritage the following might be of interest: From "Landmarks of Wayne County: Hon. George W. 1. [ROGERS] ROGERS in Rhode Island, New York, and Vermont
    2. Carol Rogers
    3. Dorothy, Please tell me where you got your information from on Gabriel Rogers from Palmyra, New York. 3. There is a possibility that I may have info on yor JEREMIAH ROGERS who was born in Rhode Island.
