    1. Re: [ROGERS] articles on william rogers from New London
    2. Carol Rogers
    3. Patti, As I've hit a brick wall in finding the parents and/or siblings of Jeremiah Rogers who was born in Newport, Rhode Island, I was hoping to find some clue to his ancestry by reading the old newspapers and finding out who was actually residents in Newport at that time. So in a way, yes, I'm trying to compile info of the Newport Rogers (from the 1700's, that is) so that if ever I find Jeremiah's connections I won't have to backtrack on all the research I've already done. However, that is not my primary reason because if I had found the proof some other way, I really believe I'd be spending my time elsewhere. Interestingly, I have been able to find some indirect clues to relationships - such as business partners, etc. But unless I find one of them relating to Jeremiah, then all would be for waste, unless something I find helps someone else. But then, do I need a reason to read old newspapers? Why do the paid sites carry them if not to read? According to Vermont records, census, and Jeremiah's Revolutionary War record listed on Heritage Quest, he was born in Newport in 1761. There is a 1790 Newport, RI, census that matches him with two males at the age that his two sons, Thomas and George, would have been before showing up in Vermont records in the 1800's. Unless Jeremiah's parents just moved to Newport just prior to his birth, or he was born there with his parents living elsewhere (or born to an unwed mother), one of the males living in Newport in the mid 1700's might have been his father. Before he died, my father-in-law always said his Rogers' line was originally from England - something passed down through the generations, I guess. About two years ago or so, someone sent me a whole line of connecting Rogers families from Newport that trailed back to a James Rogers arriving in early 1600's. However, much of it went only so far with descendants, missing a generation or two in the early to mid 1700's. 2. Carol Rogers
    3. As I press on reading these old newspaper articles for Newport, R.I., I just happened to fall on some for Newport, Pennsylvania, which I wasn't aware of that town - the newspaper called "The Newport Herald" ... for 1-3-1788 .... relayed story of Dec 2 [1787] where William Rogers, master/captain of the ship, arrived at Charleston,S.C., from Bath, N.C. - apparently joining a few others in masterminding the murder of a Mr. Abraham Nathan. There were two subsequent articles in "The Newport Herald" on 7-3-1788 and in "The Newport Mercury" dated 6-30-1788 that indicated he left two aging parents, a wife, and five young children. He was born in New London and listed his birth as Aug 25, 1748, in the history of his life that he spent time writing while in jail awaiting his execution. The two final articles were rather pathetic to read as he definitely showed remorse for his actions.

    3. Thanks Hal for your information. I found a land grant for Giles Rogers -- On 16 April 1670, Giles Rogers was granted 400 acres in New Kent County "on the road Pascataway. Beginning at the upper corner tree of Francis Orines or Oraines, back line. " [Land Office Patents No. 6, p. 300] It was for transporting eight people I can't make out most of those names but two seem to be John Evans and Anthony Morton. ("Transporting" in land grants doesn't always mean the grantee actually paid for the passage, just that he bought or was otherwise assigned the others' 50 acres each headrights. But if Giles Sr. was a ship captain, maybe here it does actually mean he transported them.) Also found this one with John and Peter as bounds adjacent to George Eastham: 22 February 1727. John Martin of King and Queen County - 400 acres King William County On the branches of the Middle River and Whites Run in St. Johns Parish beginning...corner of PETER ROGERS on the south side the Middle River...corner of Pigg and Coleman,,,corner of Martin's lower tract...Anthony Samuels line...corner of GEORGE EASTHAMS in a Valley to Rogers line...to JOHN ROGERS corner [Land Office Patents No. 13, p. 209] ---Joan

But online information seems very confused and contradictory, plus I can find no documentation or evidence provided, just names. So I thought some of you could help straighten me out about: 1. Giles Rogers' will What were the bequests, who were the executors and witnesses, did he give the name of his wife? (I have found that his will was in Albemarle Will Book 3, p. 219-220 and 227-228 and 355, but no dates provided on GenForum post. Also that "his heirs were Aquilla, Parmenas, Ann wife of Robert Davis, Lucy wife of Jonathan Barksdale, and Frances wife of Samuel Twyman.") 2. Giles' wife Woods' History of Albemarle says Giles' wife was "Ann, daughter of John Lewis of Spotsylvania." Online info gives a number of names, usually including Iverson. However, there were several unrelated John Lewis's in Spots, all with land near each other. What is the evidence his wife was "Sarah Ann Iverson" -- I haven't been able to find any Iverson evidence yet or figure out the "Sarah." 3. Rachel Eastham Where does Rachel Eastham fit in here? Is she supposed to be George Eastham's daughter--and which generation of Rogers did she marry? (It's all over the place online!) Thanks very much for anything that can clear my fog and give some tangible evidence for the various online claims. --Joan ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Joyce, Unless there was just one Capt. John Rogers, you might want to give the dates when he lived and where he was from before he was in Tennessee - if you know that. I'm viewing records from back in the 1700's and there were already so many Rogers and many Captains. Out of curiosity, I did a search in Ancestry.com for "Captain" and "Rogers" - and got more returns than what I thought I would. There was a Captain John Rogers mentioned in the New York City Wills, 1777-1783. This Captain John had a son, Gilbert. There were also Captains George, James, William, and Albert mentioned in other NYC wills during that same time. Under Record of Commisions of Officers in the Tennessee Militia there was a Lieutenant John for 1810, and Capt. John for 1812 (is that one yours?).
