    3. Clyde, The other researcher I got this info from was not you as I have his name and he snail-mailed it to me. However, if you and he had contact prior to that, perhaps that is the case. I'm just using that info to try and clarify the different Rogers men that are mentioned in these old newspapers. However, I might add that since I sent these last e-mails in, I reviewed some copies of pages from books found at my local library here in St. Louis on early Rhode Island immigrants that I had filed away a couple years ago when I first started tracing "my" Rogers line, and one of those lists just about all the information that was mailed to me. So, perhaps both of us are getting information from the same sources. I've yet to order films for the various towns in RI, but only those for Newport as that is where I thought Jeremiah was from. At any rate, Jeremiah (son of Thomas & Sarah) was born much too early to be the same as "my" Jeremiah born in 1761. The father, Thomas, died in 1719. So I'm missing a generation or two. I will study your information over and see what I can find out. Having the names of specific towns really does help as I can search those newspapers and microfilmed records as well. I'm presuming there was something in those other town records that indicated the Rogers you found were originally from Newport. But shucks ... chuckle, chuckle ... I don't think I'll be able to hop on a plane to visit the Seattle, Washington, public library!!! But hopefully the St. Louis Library will supply comparable info. One question, however, as you mentioned the first Jeremiah with wife Mary who was born possibly in Newport and moved later to Charlestown. Then later you said Jeremiah and Mary moved to Exeter. So am I correct in thinking they might have married in Charlestown? >From the other researcher I have five children for Jeremiah and Mary, but in this order: Benjamin, abt 1715; Jeremiah, abt. 1719; Isaac, abt 1721; Thomas, abt 1723; and Hannah, abt 1730. You mentioned Isaac as being the oldest - but not having Mary's death date, perhaps Benjamin and Jeremiah were dead by then. Jeremiah was listed as born in Westerly, mg. to Patience Benjamin and Jemima nee Case also had 5 children: Caleb, Jeremiah, Benjamin, Sarah, and John. A year of marriage for Benjamin and Jemima was not listed, but Caleb was listed born 6 Mar 1738/39, whereas you have a year later, so that will give me something to recheck dates for, though I realize you said that your facts were by memory (great memory to recall all of that!!!). Caleb is listed with spouse, Patience Sweet. Jeremiah has same birthdate that you gave, but there was a note of him dying about 1761 in Canada, while fighting - possibly the French and Indian War. So in a way, yes, I'm trying to compile info of the Newport Rogers (from the 1700's, that is) so that if ever I find Jeremiah's connections I won't have to backtrack on all the research I've already done. However, that is not my primary reason because if I had found the proof some other way, I really believe I'd be spending my time elsewhere. Interestingly, I have been able to find some indirect clues to relationships - such as business partners, etc. But unless I find one of them relating to Jeremiah, then all would be for waste, unless something I find helps someone else. But then, do I need a reason to read old newspapers? Why do the paid sites carry them if not to read? According to Vermont records, census, and Jeremiah's Revolutionary War record listed on Heritage Quest, he was born in Newport in 1761. There is a 1790 Newport, RI, census that matches him with two males at the age that his two sons, Thomas and George, would have been before showing up in Vermont records in the 1800's. Unless Jeremiah's parents just moved to Newport just prior to his birth, or he was born there with his parents living elsewhere (or born to an unwed mother), one of the males living in Newport in the mid 1700's might have been his father. Before he died, my father-in-law always said his Rogers' line was originally from England - something passed down through the generations, I guess. About two years ago or so, someone sent me a whole line of connecting Rogers families from Newport that trailed back to a James Rogers arriving in early 1600's. However, much of it went only so far with descendants, missing a generation or two in the early to mid 1700's. 3. I thought of something else on JEREMIAH. Lets call the first JEREMIAH (3) as he was of the 3rd generation. In ca. 1760 he bought land in Exeter of about 160 acres, but shortly thereafter he sold it to his son JEREMIAH (4) of Newport. I think ISAAC (4) also bought land from this lady of about 40 acres. Later he sold it. If you want to get films from the LDS, get the Charlestown records first & then go into the Exeter records. There are all kinds of info in the town records. Clyde ----- Original Message ----- From: Carol Rogers<mailto:[email protected]> To: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, November 14, 2007 9:03 PM Subject: Re: [ROGERS] ROGERS in Rhode Island, New York, and Vermont Clyde, This e-mail has me confused as I have from this other researcher the children of Jeremiah Rogers, son of Thomas Rogers and Sarah Cole, as married to Mary (unknown surname). Jeremiah and Mary had children Benjamin, Jeremiah, Isaac, Thomas, and Hannah - as mentioned in the other e-mail to you. I have this Isaac married to Sarah Rose. Now are you saying that Isaac and Sarah had a son, Isaac, who married Rhoda Chase and this Isaac Jr. died in 1846 at Adams, Jefferson County, NY - but this is not a confirmed fact? I had to look Jefferson County up to see how close it was to Wayne County and/or Saratoga County. Quite awhile back, possibly a couple years ago, someone contacted me about a possible connection to their Jeremiah Rogers in one of the counties around Albany, perhaps Saratoga or Rensselaer. I'll have to see if I saved her e-mail. I suggested to her that she order some films of the towns she knew by census where he lived. That might be where one of the Jeremiah descendants migrated to. This would have been in the early 1800's, when I knew my Jeremiah was already established in Brandon, VT, so not the same. How did you happen to come up with Isaac being the supposed father of Isaac? I realize that fathers commonly name one of their sons after themselves, but in my case I'm not thinking that Jeremiah, born 1761, had a father named Jeremiah as he named his sons, Thomas and George. But I can see Jeremiah naming his son, Thomas, after a grandfather, perhaps, as fathers often do. But with the info I was given, Thomas Rogers, Jr., son of Thomas and Sarah nee Cole, had only two sons of eleven children, Peleg and Job, and both of them settled in North Carolina - which is where this other researcher went with his line, but not sure which one of these was his direct ancestor. He recently informed me, however, that some of Job's descendants went to Tennessee, while some of Peleg's descendants went to Georgia - others stayed in North Carolina, I guess. So that eliminates Thomas Rogers, Jr., as a possible direct ancestor. >From the films I took notes of, I'm going to check all the births in Newport around 1761 and see who the parents are. That might give me an idea what parents there might have been then of child bearing age. Then I will try to see if I can locate their entire family from wills. If a Jeremiah is listed, and I can't place him elsewhere, then that might be my man! I believe he is the one that married Fanny Hoxsie in 1883 in Newport. Only, that might be her name from a previous marriage, but by birth she might have been Fanny/Francis Clarke. That took me a while and a trip to Newport to figure that one out, thanks to a librarian at the historical society there. I appreciate your input on this as every little bit counts. When I find out certain people are already "claimed", I can cross them off the list of possibilities. I am VERY interested! I've been working on my husband's ROGERS line of descendants from a Jeremiah Rogers who was born in Newport, Newport, Rhode Island, in 1761 to parents I've yet to confirm. He is in the 1790 census there and then left the state to what I believe was the Lyons, NY, area. I say this because he had two sons, Thomas and George, confirmed in probate records in VT. Thomas had children that are listed in Vermont as born in Lyons, NY. I've always wondered why the family traveled all way to upstate New York, then ended up in Vermont. Jeremiah lost his first wife somewhere along the line between Rhode Island and Vermont, and is found in Revolutionary War records leaving a pension to his widow, Abigail McHerd, about ten years or so after his recorded death in 1837 in Brandon. There is a marriage on Nov 1, 1807 in Springfield, Windsor, Vermont, of a Jeremiah Rogers of Brandon to Sybil Latham - which I've also wondered about as the only Jeremiah in Brandon at the time was this same one from Newport, Rhode Island. Jeremiah shows up in land records in Brandon, VT, in 1806, and then in census there in 1810 & 1820. Thomas didn't show up there until 1820 census with a line of children. Then apparently his first wife died and he married Leah Churchill for which that information has been listed on RootsWeb, and I understand there is a Churchill Family Tree record with such info as well. I haven't been able to find where George was in 1820, but he had a son born in 1821 that was listed on various records as having been born in Chester, Brandon, or Barnard. Then he was living next door to Thomas in Brandon in 1830. George had 6 children born between 1812 and 1824, all in Vermont. Even though I have an internet-listed birthdate for George M. on 29 May 1790 in Brandon, in the 1860 census he is listed in Bethel, VT, living with wife and son's family at age 72 and born in Rhode Island. In 1850 he was in Brandon and listed as born in Vermont, which might be where this internet source got the presumption that he was born in Brandon as he was living there in 1830 census as well. So I've speculated (which is a dangerous thing to do in genealogy, I realize)that Jeremiah and family were traveling from Rhode Island to upstate New York sometime around 1800 census as I've never been able to find him anywhere, so he might not have had an established residence at the time. Somewhere in the stacks of Rogers info I've collected, I have copies of vitals for Rogers living in the Lyons/Palmyra area, but I've never been able to find Thomas' children's birth records, nor have I ever found signs that they were definitely living in New York from any records there. What I have on Thomas through his first wife, Mary Ester Davis, is four children, first three born in Lyons, NY, and the youngest was Lewis C. Rogers born in Brandon, VT, in 1819. The one prior to him was Fanny Estey born in Lyons in 1818. So Thomas and family moved to Brandon somewhere between June, 1818, and August, 1819. The oldest son, Jeremiah (labeled "2nd" in VT records) was born in Lyons in 1814. Between Jeremiah 2nd and Fanny is a missing female born between 1815 and 1817, also presumed to have been born in New York as well, though living in Brandon for the 1820 census. I do have some, which I am going to try & get into my PC, but will no! t be able to until after the first of the year. 3. I have not posted anything for quite some time so will try again. My ggggrandfather was Joseph D. Rogers who was born about 1787 in North Carolina. His wife was named Cassandra (possibly Clay). Their children were born in Tennessee. I don't know if he moved to Tennessee from NC as a child or adult. They migrated to Missouri and then to Fannin County, Texas where he died in 1843. I have a very, very possible link to his parents - due to a couple of family members having possession of this persons will. I have a James Rogers with a wife named Rachel. Children listed in his will are: Joseph, Samuel, Solomon, James, Elizabeth, Thomas, John, Lucy, Sally and Robert. The will was filed in Franklin Co., TN. Any help with any branch of this family or tip of where to go would be very appreciated. Donna Rogers

    3. I think some of your info is from my research. When JEREMIAH's wife MARY died in ca. 1764, there was another son whose name I cant recall ( Maybe WADE)who was her guardian, but I guess he wanted out of the job so ISAAC was appointed. The records said he being the oldest son. I thought too, that BENJAMIN was possibly the oldest and it may be that ISAAC was the oldest living son. JEREMIAH the s/o THOMAS & SARAH was probably born in newport but later THOMAS & family moved to Westerly. 3. The only part of my research on the ROGERS is the proof that ISAAC s/o JEREMIAH had a son ISAAC who married RHODA CHASE. What I do have is a newspaper article about JOHN ROGERS s/o ISAAC & RHODA. He says his Father was born in Rhode Island. I only found 2 ISAACS in that time frame in Rhode Island & could prove that one was not possibly my man. I have looked in many counties in New York looking for some proof, but could not find any. However until some one proves me wrong I will believe I am right. I did once find an ISAAC in Dutchess County that I though would possibly be my man, but I got his will & he was not him. My ISAAC moved from Rhode Island to Hoosick, Rensselaer County in ca. 1780 & that is where all his children were born. JOHN his son lived to be 105 years. This JEREMIAH had sons JEREMIAH, ISAAC and THOMAS. ISAAC was I believe my late wife JOYCE'S ancestor. He was the father of ISAAC who died 1846 at Adams, Jefferson County, New York. I have never been able to prove the connection between the two ISAACS,but I believe this is right. I have lots of info on the descendants of ISAAC the son & RHODA CHASE his wife and have 2 other s who are actively working on the line. 3. Interesting!!! Seems much of our history is built on fables rather than facts....i.e G Washington "The Father of Our Country".....tis a fact that old George was selected as the Commanding General based on his insisting on no salary but on expenses while other candidates asked for a salary....After almost a year the Congress insisted that GW take a salary as his "expenses" were so great and so padded that he was about to bankrupt the Congress......sod familiar???? I have a "Salem Gazette" at home dated in 1768 wherein is a "Proclamation of Thanksgiving" by the Royal Governor of Ma...Honorable Governor Bernard.....So it is an old holiday even if a debunked one from the 1600's...... Old Hal, whose vacationing in AZ with his laptop!!
