They lived there for so long that they almost forgot English. On a dark night he ran away and hid in bushes until he couldn't stay any longer due to hunger and thirst. He ran for a cabin as arrows were shot at him by the indians who were still searching. He made it to the cabin and never looked back for his sister. It also said he later went back to where his people were and the house and contents were destroyed by the kidnappers, leaving no trace of his family. Travis was born in 1804 in VA or NC. Found a document today that says Travis' father, an Irish immigrant, was killed by falling tree and his mother, a Scottish immigrant, remarried a Methodist minister who "treated him badly" so he took his out. By age 17 had moved into the home of Thomas Morrison, and later married his daughter. Another family story is that he and a sister were kidnapped by Indians, Cherokees. It is also rumored that the family is Black Dutch or Melungeon. Travis' sons names were Welcome, Josephus, Thomas, Milton, Henry, Isaac. Again, I don't have the names of either parent. I think it could be possible to track down the mother through the 2nd marriage to the minister, so if you know any of these stories, or have any tips, ideas, or a general direction for me to go to continue my search, I will welcome any information offered to me on this subject. I think that I MIGHT be wrong on Jesse Rogers age, it looked like 86, but I think it was 36 or else Jesse and Sarah would be too old to have those kids, unless they were grandchildren to them. My paternal grandmother (nee "Daniel(s)") told me before she died (when I was 9 -- back in the early 60s) that "we" (she and I -- my father having passed away when I was 2) were directly descended from Cherokee blood and to always "be proud" of that fact. She never said, however, WHERE this "Cherokee blood" came from (which family) but I have thoroughly researched her father's line and there doesn't seem to be any Native American ancestors there at all so it would have HAD to come from her mother who was (depending upon which US Census taker you care to believe) one -- "Martha J." or "Martha E." or "Martha Eliza" or "Eliza" OR "Catherine" -- nee "Rogers/Roggers/Rodgers" born in (again, depending upon the census) either TX or AL in 1858 OR 1857. I have no other info on my Martha J/E Rog(g)ers other than she married my paternal great grandfather, Peter Lawson Daniels, bn. 1855 in either TX or AR (probably AR) and they lived in TX in the 1870s/80s and beyond until both passed away in Hagerman NM in the late 1920s/early 1930s. I have never been able to find out anything about Martha's siblings, parents, etc. or where they came from. There is an enigmatic Palo Pinto TX, 1880 census which lists Peter L. as living with a "Catherine" as his wife and two sons, John & James (I think) AND a 70 year-old woman listed as "grandmother" (no distinction made if she was Peter's grandmother or "Catherine's") named Mary Conaway with birth state listed as "GA". I have no IDEA how this Mary Conaway fits into the tree at ALL. I have found Peter Daniel(s)' mother, Arminta (listed as "Eliza") Daniels (nee Hagler) in the Palo Pinto 1880 census and in the 1860 Montague Cty. census with her husband James Daniels (who was killed by Indians cc 1870) and some of their other children but have never found any link on any of these census to my Martha Rogers Daniels whatsoever... I tend to agree that the "state of origin" of these "Cherokee Rogers" is probably NC because of the link to that area with the Cherokee. I wish I could find even ONE "Rogers" relative of my Martha... **sigh** jean in CA Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I and my grandmother spent many years researching, but we are stuck at his lineage, and can't find his parents. Family legend involves kidnapping by Cherokees or running away, but I haven't been able to find anything about his parents. His wifes father was born in 1774, so I would guess his father to be born 1765-1780. Some of Travis' sons names are Welcome, Thomas, Josephus, Milton, Elijah, William, and Pleasant. I know that these names are repeated many times down the line so am hoping they also repeat backwards. Their oldest daughter is named Elizabeth, I know I have seen a few Elizabeth Rogers. Both Travis and his wife Fanny (Francis Morrison) were born in VA and relocated to Tennesse. They were founders of the Old Ocee Baptist Church in Polk County, and I am pretty certain that all of the children were born in TN, which puts them there by at least 1825.
