Raymond Perry Rodgers, then a U.S. Navy lieutenant. He was a nephew of three commodores, John Rodgers, Oliver H. and Matthew C. Perry, all officers with distinguished records beginning with the War of 1812. Rodgers was superintendnet of the U.S. Naval Academy 1874-78, after serving inn the Mexican, Seminole and Civil Wars. from 1878-1880, he cmooanded all the naval forces in the Pacific. His wife was Julia Slidell, younger sister of his aunt, Jane Slidell who was the wife of Commodore Matthew Perry, famous for his expedition to Japan in 1854 and who brought back the wisteria found on many homes in the are.
