A few corrections, clarifications here, if I may.... First, there is no proof when old Doswell was born, no written record of any kind. He did give a deposition in early 1812 Lee Co. but no age was listed. He did die soon thereafter, (in Lee Co.) so IF he was born 1736 he would have died at age 76. We can be fairly sure that by 1762 he was at least age 20, and married as his proven son William was born 1763, (presumed to be the first born) So if age 20 is used then his date of birth could be as early as 1736 or as late as 1742. Keep in mind he appears in 1767 Pittsy Co. as a tithable, therefore, must be age 21, at least. 2. His assumed/presumed brother Thomas of Hawkins also has no known written date of birth, his age is unknown. Thomas, the son of old Doswell was born about 1765 according to his 1812 Lee deposition, while Doswell Jr. was born about 1768. Cousin Doswell, (son of Thomas & Jane of Hawkins) was born 1770 according to age listed in the 1850 census. 3. Doswell does make his mark on documents as "R" for Rogers, not as a middle initial. 4. Rev. Herd diary does NOT give the year of 1740 as when Doswell came from Ireland, at least not in the copies I have seen; someone may have added that date recently. The story that they came from Ireland is a family lore and may contain some truth, but who came and when, is unknown. You will notice that Hurd Rogers never mentions old Doswell as having a son named Doswell. There is only one reference to a possible son. There is the deed where Doswell SR sells to Doswell JR. The Doswell/Dauswell situation in Lee and Scott Cos. is a hard one to figure out. It may never be solved. Does old Doswell really have a son named Doswell, JR? Another problem is the son of Thomas named Dauswell who lived in Hawkins Co. Just from talking to present day descendants I often had the feeling that when I said old Doswell they were really talking about Thomas' son and not our oldest Doswell. Sorry about that mistake I just made. Old age. I looked at the wrong William Hurd. The Hurd we are referring to was born in 1813. I still contend that he most likely never saw his great-grandfather, etc. One of the other big problems that had to be straightened out in the 1970's was the two Elisha's. All of the descendants I ran across didn't realize that there were two Elisha Rogers. One was the ancestor of Mae Morgan with whom I spent many hours. He is the one whom we believe to be the son of Old Doswell. This Elisha had a son Dauswell who was the grandfather of Mae. In fact, the small town of Daus, Tn was named for him. The thing that grabbed my interest was the deed in Hamilton Co., TN referring to land that had been owned by Thomas Rogers of Scott who was the son of old Doswell. The land had been old Doswell's at one time. This really makes one believe that Elisha was his son to be involved with Doswell's land. The other Elisha who also ended up in this area was the son of William Rogers of White who was the son of Old Doswell. This Elisha was from the second family and that confused people with all of the renaming. They never would believe me that there were two separate Elishas. Hi! Again! I thought it would be better to do this in small doses. Hurd Rogers was b. in 1851. We know that old Doswell died some time after 1812 because that is when he gave his diposition in Lee Co. VA. Let' s say that Old Doswll died in 1820. Hurd is born 30 years later. Just exactly who told him the physical description of his great-grandfather? First of all Hurd's grandfather left Lee Co. before Doswell died. Hurd's father did not remain in White Co. with William his father. Hurd apparently didn't live near his father because he had moved to Cedar Grove in GA. Hurd was a circuit rider who admits he never met his cousins in Lee and Scott Co. until very late in his life. If you will check out Thomas serving from Scott Co. you will note that it was only for 3 months and he wasn't 103. Check out the will Thomas left in Scott Co. Yes, many of the things that Hurd said are true. But, not the whole thing. We have too many documents that prove otherwise. Doswell didn't serve in the Rev under George Washington. Soldiers on the Continental line were given land grants in KY in 1832. There is none for Doswell. He did sign the Oath and you can get in the DAR on that. As a patriot only and not a soldier. I have always wanted to find proof that Doswell went to King's Mtn. He lived in the right place and at the right time. Except for the local militia I have never found him serving in any major battle. Even his horse went to the battle in Lord Dunmore's War. Doswell stayed home. Hi! I have been working on Doswell Rogers b. 1736 for many years. There is still a lot of confusion going on as some of the information has been changed for reasons unknown. The real problem is because we have Doswell traveling with his son Thomas. At the same time Thomas whom I believe was born ca 1740 and is a brother to Doswell (NOT PROVEN) is traveling around with his son Dauswell. These men are together on numeous documents and are written as follows: Doswell Sr.( He would be the one born 1736.) Doswell JR,( He should be a nephew.), Thomas SR(He would be b. ca 1740 and a brother to Doswell SR.) and Thomas JR. (He would be the son of Doswell SR.) This is where everyone goes off the deep end, but it seems very logical. Later Thomas Sr. and his son, Dauswell Jr. move to NC which we know was really TN. These guys are the ones in Hawkins Co. TN mentioned on the WiLL. Doswell SR. and his son Thomas JR finally end up in Lee Co. But all four of them are listed on the petition for the creation of Lee from Russell. As for Ireland. There are no records. Back in 1970 when I visited with Rogers descendants they told me that Rogersville was named for Doswell Rogers of Ireland. They had never bothered to check this out. They just kept repeating the story. If you will do a research of the founding of Rogersville you will see that Joseph Rogers of Ireland was the founder. This is where I think the story of Doswell coming from Ireland began. Personally I still don't believe it. Hurd says that Doswell came in 1740, yet how can he if he was only b. in 1736. A married 4 year old doesn't make much sense. Eleanor ==== ROGERS Mailing List ==== Unsubscribe? Send the message UNSUBSCRIBE to: [email protected] or .... Is there anyone familiar with the Rodgers family from the Cayuga County, NY area, circa 1850. Duncan Rodgers married Lucy Thompson, daughter of John Thompson of Victory, Cayuga County, NY. Their family included George Rodgers, ca.1822, Edward Rodgers, ca. 1825, Jane Ann Rodgers, and Mary Ann Rodgers. Edward Rodgers married Jane Ann Sabin in the mid 1840's and moved to Wisconsin by 1850. Jane Ann married Thomas Lester and Mary Ann married John Lester. Jane Ann and Mary Ann applied for DAR membership from Broome County. Can anyone give me any information about this family. Where did they live? Any help is greatly appreciated. As I've been gleaning wonderful historical notes from the James Swift Rogers book on James Rogers & His Descendants I keep seeing a term used as though it is a very official title, that of "selectman" or "first selectman". Listers I have some sad news to report. My father Gerald Richard Palmer, Sr. passed this morning in his sleep. I had just talked with the friend who had been taking care of him about final arrangements and said that I could write up his obituary just last night. I wanted to type it in for you now.
