I would like to take this means to respond to several messages within the last two days related to Rogers families in the above locations. I will start with the 1860 census and work backwards. In the 1860 census for the area of Lawrence Co., AR that became Sharp County, AR in 1868, four Rogers families are listed in consecutive order. The family heads are Jeremiah D. Rogers (my direct ancestor), Fountain Rogers, James M. Rogers, and Oliver Rogers. I believe that this James M. Rogers was killed at the Battle of Pea Ridge in 1862 during the Civil War. On page 22 of her book, Eleanor lists among the children of George Rogers (born ca 1800) a Fountain Rogers and Oliver Rogers with these people living in Marion Co., TN in 1850. She also states that she believes that George had additional children. In the 1850 census for Dade Co., GA, Jeremiah D. Rogers and James M. Rogers are listed. Marion Co., TN and Dade Co., GA are adjacent counties on different sides of the TN / GA border. >From the above information, it appears to me that the four younger Rogers are brothers. This, of course, is not conclusive but strongly suggests that they are very closely related if not brothers. Recently, I exchanged several e-mails with another researcher concerning William Rogers (born ca 1801) who was living next door to James M. Rogers in the 1850 census for Dade County, GA. While I haven't been able to locate her messages today, both she and I agreed that William Rogers was probably a close relative of James M. Rogers, and all the other Rogers also. If such is the case then William Rogers (born ca 1801) would almost have to be closely related to Doswell Rogers in some manner. I would appreciate any comments on these families. Robert, You are correct that descendants of Doswell well living in the Sequatchie Valley in TN. However, they were not the only Rogers there. Jesse Rogers was also in Marion County, TN between 1826 and 1845. Jesse was b. 1791. He was the son of John (the Powder Maker) b. 1757 and grandson of Benjamin (the Immigrant) Rogers who arrived in VA from England in 1734. Also listed in the Marion Co 1830 census was Jesse's uncle, Jeremiah Rogers b. ca 1765 in Montgomery Co, VA. Although Jesse's grandfather and Jeremiah's father, Benjamin (the Immigrant) was in Montgomery Co, VA at the same time Doswell was living there, the two lines do not appear to be connected. Benjamin and his family were living in the Cripple Creek area where Benjamin was appointed Constable in 1777 and 1782. He is probably going to be connected to the Doswell Rogers line in some manner. I believe that he was listed in the 1850 census as living next door to another Rogers who was definitely connected to the Doswell Rogers line. Also, other Doswell Rogers descendants were living in the adjacent Marion County, TN at that time. As if we didn't have enough, here yet another John ROGERS associated with the Cherokees. At the Georgia State Historical Site at New Echota, some of the sites and buildings of this the last Cherokee National Capitol are rebuilt/located., etc. One building is a typical poor farmer's one room log house and some outbuildings located on a large city lot. This house belonged, in 1834, to John ROGERS, about whom absolutely nothing else is known, at least according to the park guides. They have some info on Tsan Usdli (Little John) and Nolichuckee Jack and Capt. Hell-Fire Jack all John Rogers, but nothing on this guy except a land title ascribing ownership to this man. They call him "Poor John" (It ain't a very presumptuous place) Anybody know anything about this "Poor John" ROGERS? Bugs ==== ROGERS Mailing List ==== Unsubscribe?
