Surnames: Rogers, RODGERS, Hodson, HODGSON Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/hgDBAIB/1605.1 Message Board Post: Even today I frequently have my surname misspelt by people who are only familiar with the shorter version. I expect people without the "d" sometimes get it added. I even have had it spelt "ROJERS". Some people are just bad or sloppy spellers, today and in the past. I have descent from two English lines, one mainly in the south (Sussex) and another mainly in the north (West Riding of Yorkshire). Both of these lines have names with similar roots. South = ROGERS and HODSON North = RODGERS and HODGSON In the south, historically, it is unusual to find the longer spelling of either. In the north both sets of spellings are found, sometimes in the same family, depending on the background, hearing, regional bias etc of the literate men doing the recording. In my families, the spellings had settled down by the C18 with the coming of greater general literacy. I did once hear a radio program explaining this tendency. I have a vague recollection that it related to the origins (Danish or Norwegian) of the Viking invaders raiding/settling a particular coast and the influence on the existing peoples. I think the researchers drew a line roughly NE (The Wash?) - SW (Severn estuary?) separating these two patterns - but I do not remember the details and stand to be corrected on the above.

    2. Heather Lawrence
    3. I am looking for information on Mary Katherine Rodgers(Katherine may have been spelled with a C but we have a granddaughter with same name spelled with K) born in Arkansas and married James Robert Mackey (born in Arkansas). I do not have a date of birth or death date on either of them. Though I have heard from someone that Mary Katherine may have died in 1940's and we believe she stayed in Oklahoma. I do know that they had several children Ben F. Mackey born in Texas 6/6/1884, Charlie D. Mackey born in Ardmore Oklahoma on 4/14/1888 and died 5/23/57 in Okmulgee County Oklahoma, there is also John, Doug and Betty but I have no dates on them at all. Though John may have been Mary's brother in law versus son. I know that Mary and James divorced and James lived in Texas with John, Doug and Benjamin. Mary moved to Carter County Oklahoma while still pregnant with Charlie, we believe from how Charlie talked that he never seen his dad at all nor his other brothers. We do not know if Mary remarried or not and if so if she had other kids, we also can not find a burial place for her. I believe that James lived around Hall County or around Dawson County and lived in Wagons for a long tiime with the boys moving from place to place working.I have seen refrence to them and their children in both counties. Mary I can not find in Oklahoma census so I do not know if she might have remarried or what. I do know that as Charlie got older he is seen in Wagoner, Pitsburg, Pawnee, Creek and Okmulgee Counties and he has 14 children with his wife. ANY INFORMATION WOULD BE APPRECIATED HEATHER hlawrence@olp.net or beloved1324@yahoo.com, the first email is strictly for genealogy, if in event you can not get email to go through there, my yahoo account is always active and can get mail regardless.

    2. Just a note on the spelling of the Rogers/Rodgers name. I have seen it spelled Roggers, Rogers, Roger and Rodgers for the same person. It all depended on the census taker or person writing the court documents, wills etc. They went by sound or what they heard since so many people could not read or write. As a result of a descendent of another line writing to say that their line had always been spelled Rogers even back to the l700's. I did a little research of my own. She was right! I just thought the results might be intersting to other Rogers or Rodgers researchers. I am a descendent of George Rodgers son of John Rodgers. Or at least that is the way we thought it was suppossed to be spelled. I did a timeline of some of the official papers. Taxes,Deeds, Wills etc. The result was interesting. The name change appears to have happened about the time of John Rogers death. Possibly even a few years before. George died in 1831 and I believe the spelling for his death was Rodgers. If someone has his death certificate would you check the spelling for me? I thought other researchers might be interested in the timing also. Perhaps there was a new County Court Clerk? One with more education or perhaps one who was trying to bring a more refined spelling to what was still a very young state. It should be noted that is about the time the Pearson/Pierson spelling changed in the same county. Below is the time line. 1801 John Rogers was taxed in Garrard Go, Ky for 1 white male over 21, 2 white males 16-21, 1 horse. 1802 John Rogers was taxed in Garrard Co, Ky for 1 white male over 21, 1 white male 16-21.
