Wayne, you stated that the Air Force was not in existence in WW11 ! ! ! ! My husband was in the Air Force in WW11, his papers show Army Air Force. It is true that most of the records were destroyed in the fire in 1973; but later I read where there were other records in a different place. Of course, I do not remember where that place was. That's right -- the ARMY Air Force. The United States Air Force was formed officially on July 26 1947 with the signing of the National Security Act of 1947. On September 18, Stewart Symington was sworn in as the first Secretary of the Air Force. Up until then, all records were kept by the U. S. Army Military Personnel Center. THE AIR FORCE WAS NOT A SEPERATE ENTITY, IT WAS PART OF THE ARMY, THE RECORDS WOULD BE FOUND WITH THE ARMY RECORDS. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Opal Littlejohn" <olittlejohn@hillsboro.net> To: <ROCKINGCHAIR-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 02, 2003 10:21 AM Subject: Re: [RC-ROOTS] Military History WW11 > Wayne, you stated that the Air Force was not in existence in WW11 ! ! ! !
