Dear List, I am another lurker and am enjoying the list. I have a big brick wall and would like to see if anyone can help. My grandmother was Ruby Margaret Young, born abt. 1898. At around 8 or 9 she was left in an orphanage in Texas along with a brother Dewey Young and possibly another brother John Young. She always said that her father was a full blooded Paiute Indian that went by the name of Paiute Young. I believe her mother's name was Margaret Bailey. According to my Grandmother they were headed west from possibly North Carolina and ran on hard times and the children were placed in an orphanage with the promise that the parents would return for them. Of course they didn't. We believe the orphanage was the Juliet Fowler Orphanage in Dallas, TX and all of the records were destroyed in a fire. We also believe that John Young may have been adopted. Dewey Young lived in Dallas and Houston and my grandmother was in contact with him until her death in 1977. I believe Dewey died on July 3, 1980. I know the Paiute tribe was in Utah and have wondered if the name Young came from the LDS church and Brigham Young. Next question would be why did Paiute Young go east, if family stories are true, marry and then head back to the West? I do know that when my Grandmother applied for her social security she received a birth certificate from Texas stating that her birth date was December 8, 1898 although we had always celebrated her birthday as March 2. Not sure where birth certificate came from or where it is today. I am sending for my Great Uncle Dewey Young's Social Security information but I am wondering if anyone out there has any other suggestions. All help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
