Carol- When I first started out doing research I purchased Ancestry's Red Book and it has been my "genealogy bible" as to this type of information. The book lists each state and county and when a county came into being--and what county it was formed from/name changes, etc. -- all that type of information -- as well as what records are available for what time periods and where and how to get them.
