This wasn't unusual during the Civil War. The dead on battlefields or dead in prisons might be temporarily interred where they fell or in shallow graves and later moved to permanent graves - hence the burials listed on the same day. Mass graves were common, especially with the "enemy" dead. Both sides did that. Here is a good description of the North Alton Confederate Cemetery. http://www.altonweb.com/history/civilwar/confed/index.html Sharon Ancestor Chronicles: Our Kin And Their Times http://groups.msn.com/AncestorChroniclesOurKinAndTheirTimes/ Please visit, join, and share your family stories ----- Original Message ----- From: "lillian chastain" <willow358@cox.net> To: <ROCKINGCHAIR-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 22, 2003 11:25 PM Subject: [RC-ROOTS] Confederate cem > Have a question for someone who is a history buff,,,,,,was looking through cem, and in North Alton Confed. cem, alton, Madison co, Ill,,,,,,,,,,everyone was bur on the same date and it said plot 101 for all,,,,,,,were they bur in a mass grave,,,,,,,,,,,I never saw anything like this,,,,,,,,, > > > ==== ROCKINGCHAIR-ROOTS Mailing List ==== > HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM DIGEST MODE: > please click here and send: > mailto:ROCKINGCHAIR-ROOTS-D-request@rootsweb.com?subject=unsubscribe > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >
