I really appreciate all the info about places to see where to find stuff. I think Missouri is one of the hardest places to find information. For example: In the 1920 Census, my aunt was listed as Elmer instead of Thelma. Thanks goodness I knew some of the counties that I thought she lived in. Does anyone know of a place that you can find out a county name prior to the current one? Would appreciate any hints and there seems to be a few MO. in this list. carolw611@aol.com
Hi, Thelma, The book "Handy Book for Genealogists" published by the Everton Publishers, Inc has some of the information you need. A listing by state of each county includes the date it was created and the parent county or territory from which it was created. This book is available in almost every library. When checking the early census a good imagination helps a lot. There were no forms for the individual to fill out - he/she (or perhaps one of the children or the neighbor) gave the census taken the information verbally. Thelma and Elmer sound very much alike.
