The last issue was May 4th and Julie is on a temporary hiatus due to the birth of her first grandson. She will be going to the NGS conference (National Genealogical Society) in Pittsburgh (so will I) next week and she hopes to resume publication sometime in June as her schedule permits. This is Julie's first little vacation from publishing the e-zine in about 8 years--so she has earned a bit of time off. Joan

How does one subscribe to Missing Links? Thank you. Ruth
It does seem as though our relatives kept changing their minds, as to who they wanted to be, My mother family came from Sweden, thats confusing in its self. After grgrpa got here decided there were too many Peterson's, so changed it to Boman, and then I don't know what happened, he changed it to Bowman. I think they just wanted to keep us busy......lillian
If you have a filtering system that filters spam etc. you might check your deletes before you empty it. I have found many things in there, even personal messages, that should have been delivered to my e-mail but went directly to deletes instead. A few more possibilities for posting the availability of the bible you have: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Miscellaneous/Family_Bibles.html http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Miscellaneous/HEIRLOOM.html
You might want to post your information on the mailing list Bible-Records-L@rootsweb.com. You can check out the list at http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Miscellaneous/BIBLE-RECORDS.html I believe the list also has a website. There's also both a FARRER and a FARRAR mailing list that you can fine at http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/f/ If you want to cover as many bases as possible and also post the bible on probable state/county lists, it's not to difficult to figure out where the family was in the time periods you have. I'm sure anyone related to these people will be thrilled and appreciative of your thoughtfullness. I would post as much info as you can read with a magnifying glass, in as many places as possible if you want to be sure to reach a family member, or if you can make out any other information at all and let me know, I'll be glad to check the census listings and see if we can figure out for sure where they were from. You might, of course, simply post the info on your own state/county list and genweb sites where you found the bible. It would seem logical that perhaps John passed the bible on to his son, Edwin, when Edwin reached adulthood, was married, or had his first child. With that in mind, there were quite a few FARRER/FARRAR listings in 1870 and 1880 census. Using a soundex search, in 1880, I find a total of only 10 indexed listings for Edwin...only one Edwin G. Farrar (listing below) and three Edwins with no middle initial listed. Any of those three could conceivably have been your Edwin at this point, being in IL, ME, and IN/b.NY, and not in the households of their father so we can know his name. I find 260 John FARRER/FARRAR listings throughout the U.S. The Edwin G. Farrer I find in 1880 is in Sandy Creek, Franklin Co., North Carolina: Edwin G. FARRAR, age 20, b.NC, single son of a John (59)b.ENG and Julia F.(42) b.NC FARRAR. Also in household was another son, Thomas D. Farrar, age 22. In 1870, there was in MA an Edwin Farrar, age 37 b.NH; in NH an Edwin FARRAR, age 5 b.NH; and in IL Edwin FARRAR, age 5, b.OH. There was one Edwin S. FARRER, age 39, b.MA, living in ME in 1870. The 1870 census index shows a total of 20 John Farrer listings in 14 states (and that's not even a soundex search), including 2 in MA (maybe to go with the Edwin noted above in 1880), but none in NH or IL. Of course, assuming the two 5-year-olds were indexed because their parents (or at least fathers) had died and they were living in a different household, their father could have left the bible to be presented to Edwin when he reached a certain age. (I'm just trying to think of all possibilities here, just like the ones in the 1880 census with no middle initial.) Included in the 1870 group above is a different John FARRER (45) in NC, who has a wife, Margaret (31), and lots of children that are different than those found in the 1880 census. There are also 50 John Farrar listings in 20 states, with none in NC. Again, if you can make out any other names and/or dates and don't have access to the census listings yourself, I'll be glad to try to narrow the listings down for you so you can be the most effective with your post. Hello, I purchased an old bible several years ago at a yard sale. Since i recently started searching my own ancestors I realized how invaluable this bible might be to someone and I would love to find it's "home". It was published in London (MDCCCLII) AND IS INSCRIBED: "pRESENTED TO eDWINA greenbalgh BY jOHN farrer, 1843" The second inscription is: "Presented to Edwin G. Yes indeed, certainly am getting my issues, have for some time, some very interesting information.,,,,,,,,,,,,
I'd say the signatures are probably those of the land owners themselves. I've seen documents that were "signed" with an "x" because the person could not write his name. The document itself indicates that. juanita > While I can't say for absolute certainty that the signature is my > Great Great Great Grandfathers (I don't have a proven example), I > do know the signature is different that the writing on the rest > of the certificate. > > Aloha > Wayne, NH6K > > -----Original Message----- > From: lillian chastain [mailto:willow358@cox.net] > Sent: Thursday, May 22, 2003 3:22 PM > To: ROCKINGCHAIR-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [RC-ROOTS] Land Patent > > > Would any of the long time researches know if everything on the > form they fill out, is done by the agent or is there somewhere on > that piece of paper that actually has the person applying, > signature?,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
This wasn't unusual during the Civil War. The dead on battlefields or dead in prisons might be temporarily interred where they fell or in shallow graves and later moved to permanent graves - hence the burials listed on the same day. Mass graves were common, especially with the "enemy" dead. Both sides did that. Here is a good description of the North Alton Confederate Cemetery. http://www.altonweb.com/history/civilwar/confed/index.html Sharon Ancestor Chronicles: Our Kin And Their Times http://groups.msn.com/AncestorChroniclesOurKinAndTheirTimes/ Please visit, join, and share your family stories ----- Original Message ----- From: "lillian chastain" <willow358@cox.net> To: <ROCKINGCHAIR-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 22, 2003 11:25 PM Subject: [RC-ROOTS] Confederate cem > Have a question for someone who is a history buff,,,,,,was looking through cem, and in North Alton Confed. cem, alton, Madison co, Ill,,,,,,,,,,everyone was bur on the same date and it said plot 101 for all,,,,,,,were they bur in a mass grave,,,,,,,,,,,I never saw anything like this,,,,,,,,, > > > ==== ROCKINGCHAIR-ROOTS Mailing List ==== > HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM DIGEST MODE: > please click here and send: > mailto:ROCKINGCHAIR-ROOTS-D-request@rootsweb.com?subject=unsubscribe > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >
