There was a "hellofa" fire in Saint Louis in 1973 - and yes, quite a few of the holdings were burned. Quoting fromthe NARA web site: The 1973 fire destroyed U.S. Army personnel records created from 1912 to 1963, but it did not damage U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps personnel files. While the fire left a tremendous gap in locating personnel information, the gap may be partially filled in through other extant records. This issue of "Genealogy Notes" goes beyond the scope of the previous articles by exploring a selection of the vast number of additional World War I records in the custody of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). These records often provide clues to personnel serving in a variety of capacities in the U.S. Army during World War I. Conducting research in the records described in this article is sometimes a very labor-intensive and time-consuming procedure but, in the opinion of this author, is a task that has the potential for rewarding results. Hello Rosemary, The link you sent didn't work. I to would like to get records for my Uncle in Illinois. They are free? Did I understand you? Thank you Hazel
Would this apply to WW2 vets also? My uncle was killed in action in WW2 and I have waited for records and after a year got a note from someone they are so behind it will be months longer, but he was a former Police chief from Cook Co so maybe they have records. Hi all, Please remember that the best use for this list is to share and discuss genealogy research hints and tips. Specific surname research is better handled on the lists for those surnames. Joan

Re: Are you all receiving Missing Links? I signed up for it and received a couple - then it stopped. I tried to sign up again but they said I am already a subscriber. I haven't rec'd. any in a while tho. Are other people getting them? Thank you. Gold --------------------------------- I, too, subscribed to Missing Links and have not received it, but then I just found a newsletter that I subscribed to several weeks ago, for the first time. So, is there still trouble at RootsWeb? Actually, I am surprised that it works as well (usually) as it does. Kathryn Rocha

Could/would SKS help me with this problem? I can either open or save attachments of incoming e-mail from everyone but not from someone using "webtv".....any suggestions? I click on the paperclip and get a completely blank message. Thanks for any and all suggestions. Ruth
What is the web site for missing links? Have not heard of it before. Ann
dont give up hope --I too acquired stuff froma flea market here in Florida and a almost 2 years later someone checked the archives of my post and it found its way back to the family. Of course your storage space grows while waiting for new owners.!! Ann
Diane=Thank you for the census search. With the help of a couple of friends, we were able to decipher a few more of the notes written in the Bible. "Edwina Greenhalgh born March 2 about half past 9 in the morning in the year 1826 Jhon (john?) Edward Greenhalgh Farrer born October 4 at 9 o'clock in the evening in the year 1846 Martha Anne Farrer....(the remainder illegible) The above Martha Anne died July 27th, 1856. Interment at the burial ground at West Davenport (I think this is in England) Edwin Greenhalgh Farrer born at East Davenport August 4th 1859 at 25 minutes to 10 oclock Edwina Farrer died at Henderson (?), North Carolina, March 30,1874, age 48 years and 25 days" I bought the Bible in the West Palm Beach area. Sadly there are many elderly folks living here in hotels, trailor parks, etc., wh have no immediate family near and when they pass on their personal effects are disposed of by landlords or whatever. I posted a note on the FARRER message board a while back but have had no response......Vada
THANK YOU FOR THE EXPLNATION-- i AM LOST WITHOUT MY MISSINGLINKS STUFF. a WELL DESERVED VACATION FOR HER!!! Ann
