Could someone please tell me where to write to obtain a 1902 Brooklyn death certificate. Thank you.

this was posted on Rootsweb in 2001, on the IOWA list ..... ....site that will do free lookups for you, the one listed below is the one for Iowa Marriages 1851-1900. There are many other lookups they will do for you..... http://www.ancestralfindings.com/cd222.htm haven't checked it out myself, it just came up in a search on Google actually, though it is frustrating at times, it is great fun being a beginner at tracing family ... the rewards come fairly quickly after a bit of hard work ... as you learn techniques, you surmount ever-bigger brick walls, and the rewards may not come as often (but they are still sweet) one of the best ways to gather information is to sign up for the various county and surname mailing lists available from Rootsweb, read the back archives of those too, and check the Genforum message boards some people love Ancestry.com (some records are free, most require a subscription) and others say they haven't gotten much information the LDS church has masses of records on its website, but DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT YOU SEE JUST BECAUSE IT'S THERE -- for reasons too complicated to go into this late at night, there are a lot of "lineages" which incorporate people who are not related to each other in the way they are presented; and there are "composite" people sort of *created* by merging the information from two or three or five or ten actual people ... not all of whom were related -- there are also many quite accurate records, and it's difficult-to-impossible to tell those apart sometimes Candy (actually only an experienced-beginner) Candy
Candy and Bruce, noticed this message and wondered if you know of a marriage index for Iowa, ??? i would be so happy to hear that there is, i am new at this and need your kind help. Can anyone tell me where to write in Brooklyn for a 1902 death certificate for CASTELLO, Imogene, 13 yrs. old, died or buried Aug. 27, 1902. I want to find out who her parents are. She is buried in the family plot (the cem. said they didn't have this info) but my cousins and I do now know how she fits into the family. I am even wondering if the cem. has the name wrong & it is COSTELLO. No headstone. Thank you.
Lillian, are they suggesting that they will bill you IF they find information. Some states do not want to be paid in advance. you are lucky if you're researching in Indiana, as the marriage returns are online (albeit with transcription errors -- Sarah Hamner is shown as "Hammer", and Zillah Morris is shown as "Zerrah", for example) wish the BIRTH certificates were online, as I still don't know where in Indiana my grandfather was born, in 1874 ... with any luck there'll be a listmember in that locality who can walk into the ?courthouse?, pay cash on your behalf, and mail it to you ! (assuming it is a place that doesn't require proof of direct lineage to release the information) you might also subscribe to the Rootsweb mailing list covering that locality (name of list is usually the two letter designation of the state, followed by the first five letters of the county name) so to subscribe you would send a message, for instance, to (this would subscribe you to the Barnstable Co, MA list) MABARNST-L-request@rootsweb.com with just the word SUBSCRIBE in the body of the message just replace the MABARNST with whatever location works for you best of luck Candy > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "lillian chastain" <willow358@cox.net> > To: <ROCKINGCHAIR-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Thursday, June 12, 2003 1:17 PM > Subject: [RC-ROOTS] Information please > > > > Am hoping someone who has sent for a death cert. can help me > understand what these people want. I could not believe I neglected to change the subject line from "doldrums" to "correcting information." Thanks for pointing it out, "Gold." I am shaking my head over my that one!!!! I fuss and fuss when people do not change the subject line to match the subject. I want to save things and the subject line doesn't match the subject. (Or sometimes I probably don't read things that would be helpful because the subject is not something I am interested in, so I go along and merrily deleted good stuff. ) And now I've been a perpetrator!!! Please everyone forgive me, and I will be more forgiving you if you slip up in the future. Thank you to everyone who responded to my question about what to do when I see mistakes posted concerning my "family." It was very helpful. Now to actually follow the good advice! (and not file it under doldrums....) I could not believe I neglected to change the subject line.
What a list! Thanks for sharing. Kathy Warren Hammonds

The main problem with duplicates in the combined WorldConnect/Ancestry World Tree database is caused by the fact that when someone updates a GEDCOM they submitted through AWT (on the Ancestry side) unlike with WC (on the RootsWeb side)--the new file doesn't replace the old one--it is added to it, unless the person realizes they have a Remove (unpublish) the old file they had online when they put up the new one. It is wrong to say that Ancestry doesn't PERMIT removing the old information--they just make it harder for the submitter to know how to do it. You could tell the people who said they couldn't remove the old Ancestry-submitted GEDCOMs that the RootsWeb Review explained how to do this and they can find the information here: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/review/20030409.txt Joan
