New York City Tax Photographs, 1939-1941 When I received my great grandparents' marriage certificate from New York City they informed me that the City of New York had photographs of all the buildings in the city. You need the block and lot numbers, which can be obtained from the city maps at the Municipal Archives. I sent for a photo of the building we lived in during the 1940s. The photo is in black and white, and it is very sharp. Ruth Schweitzer Editor's Note: More information on ordering these tax photographs and other prints from around the city can be found online. Milk Crates and Cemetery Photography For the vertically challenged headstones can be quite large, so to get the whole thing in a photograph you may have to stand on your tiptoes. I've found that standing on a milk crate gives me the added distance away from the marker that I need. Be sure to take one of these the next time you visit a cemetery. DJ Kopp Send Tape Recordres to Family When you send a tape recorder to older relatives, include a list of things that happened that will jumpstart their memories. I am fortunate to have completed biographies of my grandmother and mother, and to have my own autobiography. As the keeper of family history, I look forward to sharing this information with my children. Sincerely, Catherine Margaret Fairbanks Stone Gustavson Request for Help Scanning Tin Types This is not a tip-it is actually a request for a tip. I have seen some tips on working with photos, but none on working with tin types. I have a tin type of my grandfather that comes out blue when scanned. Any ideas? BJ Scott

Haste makes waste. There's a tremendous amount of at least equally good free resources available through sites connected with Rootsweb, the USGenWeb, and countless others, not to mention the free lookups available through the 26,904 mailing lists on Rootsweb and the thousands of other mailing lists available through Yahoo groups and others. You can now even access images of almost all US census records for free via remote access from home to Heritage Quest Online through various libraries. If your financial resources are limited and you "haven't been doing this very long", I would stick to the free sites as long as possible and save my limited finances for such things as the best record-keeping software you can get (I prefer TMG), good reference books for your home that you can't find online, obtaining primary documents such as birth, death, and marriage certificates, copies of military records, etc. (all of which have rising fees), copies of courthouse records, memberships in the most advantageous genealogical organizations for you, and much, much more. There is much to be found in primary documents and books that cannot be found in indices of them online, not the least of which is the positive proof that only a primary document can give. As you research more and more you'll find that it's not at all difficult when you run into a bump in the road to simply change directions temporarily and still utilize free resources to make significant progress in your research and result in a truly quality product. I would not subscribe to any of these sites or magazines on genealogy until you have all of the information on your parents and grandparents. You can get as much free information out of rootsweb and ancestry now. Family search usually has a family history church close by and usually keep free computer discs of the state and city you are in and has a list of cd's you can order for about $5 and use in their library. They have local census on micro film you can search their indexs and search on micro film which you can copy. Your local library probably has a genealogy department that has books on census by state and federal census. They would have histories of your cities, probably the whole state and states next to yours. The library usually has ancestry.com plus on their computes. Then you can search ancestry.com getting into information you would have to pay for. There is a volunteer in the library to show you how to search, copy and get information. If you have a college library in town they have more information. They also have genealogy magazines you can read or copy articles on your family or other free websites. Join a local genealogy society and they will help you get information and local sites on the internet that can help you. This is all free-free-free. Then after you use these areas of genealogy, you can decide to pay for a website. All you have to pay for is copies which is 5 or 10 cents. Earl Gates

Hello List......What is all this about Rootsweb not being there? I've just finished working almost 3 hours on Rootsweb.....just put in my surname and went right to the list. Did you use: www.Rootsweb.com? It has ALWAYS worked for me. Happy Searching.
turned out it was another site with a URL very close to Rootsweb's so DON'T leave the "s" out of Rootsweb when you type it in that thing which comes up if you do, will try to take over your computer curses on those who put it up C

I got in via http://archiver.rootsweb.com and by http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com but everytime I tried http://www.rootsweb.com or even http://searches2.rootsweb.com up came this messy commercial site which drove me nuts; I dislike "cookies" at the best of times, and a popup ad which asks me to pick it as my new home page just infuriates me I miss the quaint cross-stitched original Rootsweb site; it appears to have disappeared; I guess I will have to ask for an Ancestry.com or GenealogyLibrary.com subscription for my birthday ... Maybe I don't understand what you are trying to do -- but when I go to http://www.rootsweb.com/, I get two search boxes just below the menu bar -- One says Search Rootsweb.com and the other says Search Ancestry.com. When I put in a search for William Hewlett in the Rootsweb.com box, I get a completely different result than what I do when I do the same in the Ancestry.com box. I am also subscribed to Ancestry, com and can get into any of the data bases I have subscribed for. Gold and interested others, To get information about the location of resources in the various states, go to your nearest LDS Family History Center and pick up a copy of the Research Guide for the particular state you are interested in. There will be a small fee to purchase the Guide, but these guides are well worth it. To find the location of Family History Centers in you area go to www.familysearch.org . On the home page click on the" Library" tab then click on " Family History Centers" , then follow instructions to find your nearest Family History Center. I don't know what happened -- duhhhhh - but the nice friendly Rootsweb main site seems to have disappeared "morphed" into a site with what appears to be nothing but advertising couldn't do a standard list-search to save my life ... anyone else find this?
