    1. [RC-ROOTS] Ancestry.com - France
    2. I recently posed a question to Sr.-Newbie when I should have sent it to our RockingChair list. Sorry about that. I have not yet subscribed to Ancestry.com. My ancestors are from France and I am wondering if Anc.com offers any research or info regarding French ancestry? Has anyone ever tried research in France??? TIA FOR A REPLY. Noelie in LA

    3. Friends, a big thanks to all of you for your input on this subject. I do have a further question. If one signs up, is everything included in the package......United States, UK, Ireland.....is there anything or any area, which is unobtainable or has an extra fee. As always input is essential for all of us to be fully informed. 3. My maternal grt. grandmother Cora Link and her sister Lena Link married 2 brothers. My maternal grandfather's grandmother Flora Link was their aunt. My maternal grt. uncle Jack Thompson(Flora's son) married his 2nd cousin,Ruby Link. Johan Nicholaus Lincke a Hessian soldier appears in my tree 8 times. This makes my tree branches *giggle* intertwined. But another part of this same branch, has summers marrying briley. briley marrying summers, summers marrying summers, and briley marrying briley whose mom's were summers. My point is when looking at a census record check at least 5 families before and after yours. They were neighbors, went to school and often church together and frequently intermarried. ===== __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! 3. I have been a member for 3 yrs. and tried their free trial sub. before that. I know some think it is expensive but considering the alternate ( travel and hunting) it is a great place to get info on your ancestors and finding them in the census records or on someones tree gives you knowledge of where you need to go to find original documentation if you are wanting to confirm beyond any doubt. I have found ancetors back to 1600's, conversed with persons involved with these folks about where they recieved their info and believe it to be true. I will continue to be a member because they are adding more info all the time and the more you use it the more you learn how to find more ancestors. Jack

    3. Ancestry Quick Tip Jamboree Family Chain Letter This is in response to the call for information on how to set up a "family chain letter". My husband's family has been doing this for the forty-five years we have been married and a good many years before that. It is a wonderful way to keep in touch. An address list containing each member involved is created. It can be either e-mail, or the old-fashioned letter way, which how our family does it. One person starts the chain by writing the news of his or her family. That letter is sent to the next one on the list. Number 2 person writes his or her letter and mails both letters to Number 3 on the list. Each person on the list does the same. If you have 12 people, number 12 on the list will receive 11 letters. Number 12 sends the letters back to Number 1. Number one takes only his or her old letter out and writes a new one and sends it on as before. In my husband's family we started with his parents and 12 children. We are down to just nine children now and it comes around about every 2 months. It has been a delight to keep in touch this way. The list also includes the birthdays and anniversaries of the members as well as telephone numbers and e-mail addresses. One could create the list to meet whatever the group wants. It could also be used to send family histories or other things of interest to the family such as newspaper clippings, photos, etc. Hope this is of some help. Glenna Boswell California Round Robin Ideas .If the "Robin" has a special focus, theme, or topic, include a few questions that everyone will answer. As you read each others' notes this will bring other ideas and many branches, but the initial questions will refocus each participant. Set a forwarding deadline-30 days from receipt, for example, but probably not less than two weeks. (Yes, some of us do need deadlines!) This may depend somewhat on the number of participants and theme/topic of the Robin. The package should make it around in less than a year, but illness, vacations, family responsibilities, plenty of reading, and putting a contribution together do mean it won't be ready for the mail the next day. Each participant has an envelope that is "theirs." No one else takes stuff out (except to read or copy). This means you have two ways to share that great wedding photo of your great-grandparents-either make copies for everyone and put them in each envelope, or put one in your envelope, and anyone who wants a copy can copy it.. Joanne Hintz (view the rest of Joanne's great round robin tips) Circular Journals Your readers might want to check out the "circular journals" at www.circlejourney.com . Perhaps the coordinator could pre-address and mail the included envelopes to each family member (from Grandpa Albert to Aunt Bea, from Bea to Cousin Charles, etc.). Then all she would have to do is pester each relative in turn to finish their contribution! Karen Lowe Yearly Newsletter LaKesha wrote that she needed input in starting a chain letter for family history. In the late 1950s I started a chain letter for my classmates and before the year was over someone accidentally burned them before being sent to everyone. Since then I have everyone write me after Thanksgiving and then put them together so everyone will receive the newsletter. I am still doing it and it has been successful. Yvonne

    1. [RC-ROOTS] Ancestry Quick Tip Jamboree 9-8-03
    2. Doris Mathis
    3. Ancestry Quick Tip Jamboree Census and Directory Tip I enjoy your quick tips and read them every time I get the daily Ancestry in my email. Here's one that some of your readers might find helpful. On the 1920 census I had searched every way I thought I knew for my husband's great-great-grandparents, John and Anna Krugman. After a few line-by-line searches, I finally decided to read my notes again to see if perhaps it might give me something I missed. In my notes was the address where the family had "always" lived. I used the address and with a bit of work was able to locate John & Anna-at their usual address, only listed as Kaufman instead of Krugman. Two lessons: One, always look closely at variations, and two, use city directories and record the addresses. They could come in handy some day! Karen Krugman http://www.wwnet.net/~krugman1/ Check All Images Last night (or more correctly, early this morning!) I was browsing through the 1900 Census in the enumeration district where I thought I would find my great grandfather and his family. Image 17 of 20 contained a half-filled page, and 18 of 20 was a completely blank page, so I thought I had reached the end of the information for this district. Just to be thorough, though, I looked at images 19 and 20, and, to my surprise, found two more complete pages of census information. So my tip is, look at all the images, even if it looks as if you've come to the end of the enumeration district. Vickie Deppe Naperville, Ill. Postcards Vintage post cards, often found at flea markets and antique shops, are an excellent source to supplement a family narrative or history. City institutions, such as hospitals, libraries, and schools, often appeared on postcards in the early part of the twentieth century. City parks, commercial or business districts, ethnic neighborhoods, and historic homes (particularly in the South) can take the place of nonexistent or missing photographs. Recent finds include the hospital where family members were born, schools they attended, and city parks where leisure time was spent. Abby K. Quigley Tips for Research Trips I have visited the FHL on and off for many years. Like you, I want to spend every second researching, rather than doing things like catalog work that I can do at home or in my local FHC. So, in addition to finding film numbers, I make electronic copies of the catalog entries for the film series I'm interested in. Then I enter, again electronically, the specific records I'm looking for, film by film. For example, most of my family lived in New York City in the first decades of the 20th Century. So I'm looking for many births there. I download the entire record of NYC birth indexes, indicate all the births I'm looking for--which might include a range of years for some people--and discover I'm using the same films for several lookups. I print out the series record. That way, I can plant myself at a reader closest to the cabinet where that film series is filed, and be winding films within a minute of my arrival, making notes of what I find or don't find. Very efficient. The other thing is, I don't do analysis in the Library. I just collect records. I do the analysis when I get home, unless I find some particularly promising lead requiring immediate follow-up. Mike Meshenberg
