    3. Hi Anna, Are you any place near Houghton Lake? I know my son did some surveying in Grayling about 11 years ago, but I can't remember where it was. My Uncle lived in Bellaire and so traveled up there also. If there was any work available in Houghton Lake/ West Branch area I would pack up and move in a heartbeat. It is the most beautiful place to live in the world. My daughter-in-law was born and raised there and her family all still live there and we go out for vacations. I have been there both summer and winter and loved "Tip up town", I had never seen anything like the ice fishing and all the stuff they do before, it is such fun. I like cold better than hot climate so upper Mi. is a great place! All the people in Michigan are so nice and so friendly not phonies like here ,people in New England are not as warm and trusting they are so cold and suspicious of everyone.(I was born and raised here and have traveled all over and find the mid-west people are the best anyplace) in genealogy I have had so much help from people in Mi., Il. and Wisconsin Helen ----- Original Message ----- From: <genmail@1st.net> To: <ROCKINGCHAIR-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 06, 2003 12:07 PM Subject: Re: [RC-ROOTS] Anna in Michigan > Anna, I hope you and others who come from or have interest in the

    2. Anna, I hope you and others who come from or have interest in the region find time for the Appalachian-Life mailing list. The conversation on it varies quite a bit depending on how busy everyone has been and sometimes becoming a bit more current chat rather than research-oriented; but they also do an excellent job fulfilling the primary purpose of discussing the unique way of life and values of the region. I'm sure the stories you could share just about your being raised there would add a great deal to the list, so I hope to see you there..and definitely not just lurking. I should have added that I'm a "displaced" Far West Kentuckian, born and raised in Graves County, with deep roots in Calloway County, KY and Henry County, TN, living in the Lewiston, MI area. I started my search about 2 years ago for my Father's family, knowing almost nothing about them. He talked very little about them and I wasn't smart enough to ask questions! I have made contact with several close cousins and a few from generations back - all from lists!! They all have given me lots of information. I am researching CROUCH, STURDIVANT, RAY and SWOR on my Father's side and ADAMS, CLARK, HAIL/HALE, LUMPKINS on my Mother's side. 3. Hi Anna: Thanks for the reply! Can't help you with any of the surnames in your line - sorry! Don't ever think you'd be finished with all your searches - it will NEVER happen, there's always more. You go from searching the "tree trunks", then the limbs and branches, onto the leaves, etc.! I have the same problem with my searches - I still work part time and it keeps getting in the way of genealogy! We're also fairly close to you, we live east of Grayling, between Grayling and Luzerne. 3. Hi Kathryn: You might try typing in for example: Wayne County, Michigan Cemeteries (which I have done). I've been sucessful with that type of search. In your case, it would be the County of the state you are searching. Chuck SadieOkate3@aol.com wrote: I'm still out here too, just lurking! I've checked out Newspaper obits in the past but they usually don't go back in time far enough. Does anyone know a site that has older archives (late 1800's and early 1900's)? The newspapers I would be interested in would be the Detroit, Mi. area (Detroit News, Detroit Times, Detroit Free Press, etc.). These papers are not listed in Ancestry.com Historical Papers, as yet! Help! Chuck Re the above request, I, too, would be interested in Obituaries In NY, CA, and Hawaii. And is there a list of all cemeteries that one could access? (Along with Funeral Homes.)
