Hello Ladies, & Gentlemen; After you have down loaded the magnifier. Go to the location that you down loaded it to. Once there you have two options; 1 left click it and start the program, once the program is running you will receive a icon of a magnifier in the task bar. If you right click on that there will be a line that says add task bar icon automatically at windows startup. if you click that a check mark will show up next to it and now when ever you start windows it will be in your task bar. option # 2 is to right click the icon in the file folder when the program resides and left click create shortcut a shortcut will appear in your file folder. Just left click and hold that shortcut and \drag it to your desktop. Now you will have a shortcut to old people on your desktop, When you want to use it just double click with the left mouse button and it will start the magnifier. I hope this helps you get it running it is a great tool. And Ruth, do not feel sorry that you can not help. It takes lots of years of trial and error to get to know the computer enough to feel comfortable with it. I know that I have had one since about 1984 and I still find things that don't work the way I think they should. Hi, Thelma, The book "Handy Book for Genealogists" published by the Everton Publishers, Inc has some of the information you need. A listing by state of each county includes the date it was created and the parent county or territory from which it was created. This book is available in almost every library. When checking the early census a good imagination helps a lot. There were no forms for the individual to fill out - he/she (or perhaps one of the children or the neighbor) gave the census taken the information verbally. Thelma and Elmer sound very much alike. I think Missouri is one of the hardest places to find information. For example: In the 1920 Census, my aunt was listed as Elmer instead of Thelma. Carol- When I first started out doing research I purchased Ancestry's Red Book and it has been my "genealogy bible" as to this type of information. The book lists each state and county and when a county came into being--and what county it was formed from/name changes, etc. -- all that type of information -- as well as what records are available for what time periods and where and how to get them. I have checked *after* executing the magnifier and when it appears in the tray (bottom right of the monitor near the time), if I right click there then the option is given to add taskbar icon automatically at Windows startup. If you click on that option, a checkmark will appear. That should bring the magnifying glass icon into your taskbar the next time you restart. The browser Opera has a built-in magnifier/reducer readily accessible in the top right corner of your screen that will allow you to size a page from 20% to 1,000% . Of course, Opera doesn't always work for everyone on every web page. I like it better whenever possible, though. Ruth, You shouldn't feel upset about doing us a favor. I love the magnifier, and others seem to, also. It won't work for everyone - no software program ever does. This is a situation where everyone should be cautious about downloading anything new. Programs can conflict, what works with PCs won't necessarily work with Macs, and every version of Windows is different. Sharon
Mary, I have win 98 but do not have accessibility under accessories. Nancy
Hi to All, I have not posted either but read all the newsletters. I get a lot of helpful info. Maybe someday I will have something to offer. Thanks. Nancy
Click again on the executable which probably is on your desktop. The magnifier must be executed each time you start up your computer. Elaine Any American who is prepared to run for president should automatically, by definition, be disqualified from ever doing so. --Gore Vidal Hello Ruth On Wednesday, May 7, 2003, you wrote > I downloaded the magnifier, and the next time I booted up--the magnifier had > disappeared from the system tray. I I have WIN 98 SE but when I go to start>programs>accessories> I don't have accessibility or magnifier. I updated from WIN 95 TO WIN 98 SE, would that be the reason why? I did, however, download the oldpeople.com magnifier and it's available as an icon on my task bar now. juanita don't know about the rest of you, but I already have a > magnifier on my computer... I think the executable one is nicer, not sure I am using the same one, but it's nice to be able to click it on and off from the desktop and so I rarely use what has been packaged with 98SE/ME or XP and have used an executable magnifier program on every system.
