I found the service record for a confederate soldier. One page has this information: Court martial. Title of record: G.O.No.97-1, Dept of N.VA-Lee, Nov 4 1863. "This record contains information relative to the above named man, upon the subject stated. (Confederate). I would like to get a copy of this. I believe the G. O. stand for General Order. How to I go about that. I am a new subscriber to FOLD3 which has lots of military records but I haven't yet learned to access everything. It may or may not be in FOLD3. Floreda
Sure--here you are: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Miscellaneous/SENIOR-NEWBIE.h tml The way the lists word today you just subscribe--and you receive a confirmation link that give you the option to check off list or digest. So you don't need to worry about that when initially sending your subscription request email. Joan In a message dated 11/15/2009 7:25:29 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, Piercedav@aol.com writes: Policy ? Joan, many thanks, I was unaware of the seniors list. Regards Paul
Paul- No problem...it is a good opportunity for me to get to explain the difference in usage of the two lists from time to time. Thanks! Joan In a message dated 11/14/2009 8:55:57 A.M. I'm not sure if this is the right question to ask this list, but I have a query regarding how I might save emails that have collected over the past year, all to do with family history. Is there a safe and easy way to copy and keep these? There are quite a number, so probably do not wish to store them on the computer but if anyone has easy steps on how to do this to disk, I'd be very grateful. Paul
Hi, Paul- A long time ago two sister lists were created. This one for discussion of genealogical research issues where we could discuss methods and help others in an easy step by step manner that would be easy for seniors (and others) to understand. It is a place where no one needs to feel that their question is too "stupid" or silly to be asked--because if you have the question there are probably many others with the same question. At the same time, we also have our sister list: SENIOR-NEWBIE@rootsweb.com which was created for the purpose of asking questions related to computer and Internet and other technology issues--so that we all can enjoy our genealogical research and better use the tools that today's technology provides for us. That said--I think you'd get better answers to your particular question on the SENIOR-NEWBIE list. Joan, admin In a message dated 11/13/2009 3:42:57 A.M. Joan, I'm glad to hear your advisement about our (this) list. It is another interesting thing to see the different perceptions of the newer members to our group. I have been on this list almost since it`s inception. I used the expertise of so many of my peers here, so often and did not always thank the contributors for their input. I even made some offers via this resource . I see this group as an invaluable learning tool which sits by the wayside until the questions posed come around looking for an answer. Just like an old or ancient tool or appliance. Active ? Inactive ? These two words do not really apply to this kind of a forum . I thank you Joan, and all of the other users for the past help in that I have been able to better understand - both simple and complex issues, the results of that help is what we < _rockingchair-roots@rootsweb.com_ (mailto:rockingchair-roots@rootsweb.com) > are all about . Three cheers for us. Doing seventy in the Past lane Dave I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you may have heard, is not what I meant . I have always viewed the lists I admin (this one among them) as being resources that are HERE when the list members have questions or issues they want to discuss. It is up to the list members to make the list active--ask away--we'll all read and respond if we feel we can help with your genealogical research questions. This list is more for discussion "how to" do your research than it is for specific surname or locality research--but don't be afraid to ask. No question is too "silly" or "dumb" to ask. This list is one where patience and understanding are the watchwords. Joan, admin ROCKINGCHAIR-ROOTS@rootsweb.com In a message dated 11/12/2009 10:36:53 A.M. It might be helpfull to remind everyone how this list differs from the other ROOTS lists or what group it means to target.
Hi Rick, The archives show only 1 or 2 messages so far this month and one of those would be yours. You might post your question to gen newbie which is another roots web mailing list. It is quite active and you would probably find an answer. sorry I can't help you with it. Rick: This is an extremely quiet list and yours is the first post I have seen in awhile. I even forgot I was subscribed to it! Have you posted to the PA Westmoreland list for help? A friend of mine and I recently released a podcast about Genealogy. http://www.podcastgenealogy.com Feel free to check it out, let us know how we are doing, and pass on the link if you are so inclined. Bob Fornal bob@fornal.org http://www.podcastgenealogy.com
Here is a website that has a great map for the area in 1883. It is very detailed. Hope this might help. http://www.library.wisc.edu/etext/ravenstein/#Introduction Firstyou find the city in the index. This will tell you which quadrant to open for the corresponding map. The directions are pretty clear on the webpage.
