As part of my efforts to encourage information exchange, I have been exploring other methods besides maintaining somewhat static web pages on the Roblee web site at http://www.robleesonline.org. As you know, we created that site a few years ago to develop the family histories of the Roblee surname (sometimes spelled as Robblee or Rublee and including other variations such as Robley, Rublier, Rublyer, and Rubleyer). Later, we added the ability to use a web browser to see info as it is posted to my Greencity web log (look for the category on the Roblee family). You can subscribe directly to the Roblee category family history channel via the Roblee web site and add the feed to an RSS reader. Many of our researchers, however, are unfamiliar with this type of information sharing, preferring more traditional methods of information exchange such as e-mail groups (example, this mailing list at Rootsweb.com) or simply information posted on the web site. In the midst of my other interests, I was thinking of a way to integrate another type of information exchange program--more along the lines of the old bulletin-board style system, figuring some users might be more comfortable with that. Fortunately, such systems have been developed for the web, and I found an easy-to-administer one. On my personal web site, I have added this forum-type software, and included the Roblee researchers on one of its forums. We're not a big enough group (still fewer than a hundred souls) to justify setting up a separate data base. Though it wouldn't add to the cost of maintaining our web site (which as you know is paid for by voluntary contributions each year), it simply wasn't worth the bother. I would encourage your to explore this if you are interested. Registration is required as it is an opt-in, confirmation type system designed to prevent spam and other malware. After you have initially registered (your e-mail address and a password is required), but you will have your own username (I suggest you use a real name, such as mine: Douglas_Detling). You will be asked to confirm your desire to participate by an e-mail which contains a confirmation link. After that, you'll be able to log in and participate. As the forum's participation grows, we will add features such as the ability to exchange information in private messages directly on the site--not using e-mail. This is not intended to supplant the Roblee list at rootsweb.com, and from time to time we will post information derived from that list to make it more quickly accessible. As you may know, all rootsweb messages are archived and searchable, but this way, relevant info may be more readily available. Unfortunately, unlike our list at Rootsweb.com, as forum administrator I don't have the ability subscribe you directly. I can help you, once you are registered, however. Therefore, I would encourage you to go to http://www.greencity.org/forum. After you register and confirm your participation, you'll be able to help in another method of information exchange on our ROBLEE family.
