    3. Very interesting! You really point out the importance of looking at maps. Sometimes we just assume that a town in another county is far away, when it is just spitting distance away! The information you provide about the context of the geography and economy of the area is very clarifying. Thanks! Cindy -----Original Message----- From: PMaeveReed@aol.com [mailto:PMaeveReed@aol.com] Sent: Sunday, August 27, 2006 5:11 PM To: asr141@copper.net Subject: Re: Lucy Jane Roblee/ Notes on Cindy's notes/AHA! Aha! My Cross relatives were attracted to the area (like so many others) by the money to be made in the lumber business. They chopped the trees down all winter and when the ice in the lakes and Hudson River went out in the spring, away went the felled logs on the high water down the river to the lumber mills in North Creek, Glens Falls and eventually, possibly, New York City. Logging continued into the last century and my father and grandfather worked on the "river drives". What does this have to do with the price of tea in China, you ask? The township of Minerva and Essex County begins on the opposite bank of the Hudson River and the town of Johnsburg was on the other where the Roblees and Crosses owned their piece of land. Present day Route 28 runs along the Hudson and turns away from the river just north of the hamlet of North River. In North Creek as well as in North River, people lived on both sides of the river then, in the townships of Johnsburg, Warren County and Minerva, Essex County, but all lived in North River (or in North Creek where the same situation existed). This was not a big issue at the time, there being no good roads to speak of on either side until later on and no great taxation differentials. Today many of the homes that used to be accessible only by water across the river, have fallen in and been abandoned in favor of homes on the Town of Johnsburg side. There is also a tantalizing tale of a "lost cemetery" that was on the other side. Also at this juncture of the road and river, Hamilton County starts (and the township of Indian Lake), on the Johnsburg side at least. I'd have to check the map and see if the river bisects that county or if Essex continues on the opposite shore. Might someone's verbal history have confused the name "Hamilton" with "Harlem"? I don't think it would be a waste of time to check for any missing relatives in Essex County or Hamilton County cemeteries and records although Johnsburg was where we tend to think the main action was. My Cross relatives came down from Essex County, further up near Lake Champlain by way of Vermont so it's possible. Happy Hunting! Phyllis Reed

    3. Thanks for pointing out what is most likely an error! I rather doubt there was ever a Harlem Co., NY. In 1850, Jacob and Lucy lived in Minerva, Essex, NY. Harvey was then 4. In 1860, they lived in Johnsburg, Warren, NY. In 1870, they lived in Chester, Warren, NY. In 1880, they lived in Corinth, Saratoga, NY. I left the spelling of Straight was Streight (even though I thought it was most likely Straight, as it was that way in the Milo Roblee manuscript. I will change it to Straight. Thanks for paying attention to my ramblings, Phyllis!! 1. Additional notes
    2. For those who haven't been following along, some notes on "The Crick" as locals sometimes refer to North Creek: 1) Baptist, Union, Holcombville (and often just plain North Creek Cemetery) all refer to the same cemetery. There are only two cemeteries in the entire town and the "other one" is the Catholic Cemetery whose internment guidelines were a little more stringent as I understand it. There may be (converted) relatives in there that I don't know about. I never walked around that cemetery. 2) New York State is divided into counties. Each county, including Warren, is divided into several "Townships". One township includes several (or more!) villages and hamlets, not to mention small settlements like Holcombville that are little more than crossroads with a few houses. Inside The Town(ship) of Johnsburg, you will find the villages or hamlets of North Creek, North River, and just to make it a little more confusing, Johnsburg. So you could be from the hamlet of Johnsburg, in the Town(ship) of Johnsburg, in the County of Warren, in the State of New York. You could be from the hamlet of North River, in the Town of Johnsburg, in the County of Warren, in the State of New York. Outsiders find this old system very confusing, especially if they search for North Creek's high school and only find Johnsburg Central School. Granville is in Washington County, NY and I'm not sure of the township there. 3) Roblee- Cross connections: My Calvin O. Roblee (son of Lyman and Amy Smythe and grandson of Calvin and Fanny/Frances) married Sarah Adelaide Cross, probably around 1865 as both were born in 1847 and 1846 respectively (if my documents are right - I defer to Cindy on this!). Oliver Hazard Perry Cross was Sarah Adelaide Cross' father. Siblings of (Oliver Hazard) Perry Cross have names Judith, Halsey, James Mattison (Madison?), Sarah, Andrew Jackson Cross and Maria S. Cross as mentioned under Hughes-Waldron ancestry on Rootsweb. This Andrew Jackson Cross has dates b 1819-d July 11,1902. If this is your same Andrew mentioned, father of Judson Cross, are the dates wrong? Did Judson have a falling out with his father, was his father a widower, or too sick to care for him and the census taker was told erroneously that Judson was an orphan? Interesting! I leave that for other Cross researchers. Happy hunting! Phyllis Reed

    3. Here is the information I have on the children of William and Judith Waldron. I deleted the information on Jacob's children since we have already discussed them. Although advanced in years, "Uncle Ike" expects to resume his old position on the stage coach next season. Issac Roblee lived in close proximity to his father and sister Betsey at the time of the 1855 New York state census in Johnsburg. In 1870 and 1880, he was still living in Johnsburg. 3. Kathy, I apologize to you and others for the confusion. I cc'ed the list without rewriting the message. So let me try again. Some list members are not receiving their Roblee-L mail either because they use SpamCop or their ISP uses SpamCop to identify IP addresses that "send spam." One of the Rootsweb servers--IP address 66.43.27.27--has been so identifed. What I was basically trying to tell people was that if for some reason they stop getting list mail, it might be because of this. Various list administrators around the country are trying to get this resolved. Hopefully in the next day or so, before the migration of the mailing list in September. Rootsweb messages are not spam but from a subscriber maintained mailing list. You will have to inform SpamCop that IP 66.43.27.27is sending you mail from the Roblee mailing list at Rootsweb, and that is it NOT spam. If your e-mail address continues to be listed as bouncing for a certain period, you will automatically be unsubscribed from te ROBLEE mailing list. 3. Thanks to all who responded to my post. I truly appreciate it. I have a question about the family history by Milo R. Roblee, 1900. The only place I've seen it is here.... http://www.judybreck.com/breck_north_family/family_collections/Roblee/milo_roblee_p1.html, and it only has 4 pgs. Cindy, you made reference to pages 7 and 8 in your message. Am I missing some of the text and if so can you tell me where I may find the complete record? I have a copy of the Revised History of Harlem by James Riker and there, within the children of William G. and Judah/Judicke/Judith (Bradt) Waldron, it has several Roblees and Waldrons marrying. I thought perhaps that these Roblees might be Lucy's siblings but have not connected them to Theron and Anna (Baker) Roblee. Wynant Vandenburgh Waldron married Laura Roblee, 25 Sep 1834 Margaret Ann Waldron married Luther Roblee June 24, 1832. William H. Waldron married Betsey D. Roblee, 19 Oct 1845. I was remiss in my first message in leaving out Jacob and Lucy's daughter, Mary E. Waldron. I descend from their son, Philetus F. Waldron and his wife Margaret Ann "Maggie" Bush. As you can tell, I'm still filling in many missing pieces. K.

    1. List Migration Schedule Update

    3. The following is a message received from one of the key Rootsweb administrators working on the migration of the mailing lists: "The issues AOL had in accepting email from lists9 appear to be resolved. The migration will resume on Monday, August 28. The migration schedule has been updated to reflect this change." Based on the revised schedule, I expect the following: DETLING-L (and D-) will be migrated on Monday, August 28. This is the list I maintain with the fewest subscribers, and only one is on AOL. ROBLEE-L (and D-) will be migrated on Monday, September 5. This list has more than 50 subscribers, several on AOL. If there are problems when Rootsweb lists start migrating again, the schedule will surely be revised. I am hopeful that this transition will go smoothly. Once the lists are migrated, I will prepare a message on how to send messages to the list (actually it doesn't change much from what we have been doing). in the Meantime, if you have questions about this, feel free to send a message to the list, and I'll reply to each list. After a few weeks of transition, we can get back to genealogy. Doug Detling Administrator of the following Rootsweb lists: BRADT, BROTT, BUNKER, DETLING, ROBLEE

    1. Delay in Moving the Mailing Lists
    2. Douglas Detling
    3. Earlier today, I sent a message to subscribers of the Roblee-L mailing list at Rootsweb informing them of a one-day delay in migrating the mailing lists at Rootsweb to new mail handling software. 3 of my lists were successfully migrated Thursday. However, it is apparent the AOL is not accepting mail from Rootsweb's new IP address used to manage the mailing messages, and until further notice, the schedule for migrating the remaining mailing lists has been suspended. So the Detling-L mailling list will not be migrated today as originally planned, and the Roblee-L one will also be delayed. Interestingly, the problem with AOL seems to be intermittent or something, as some mail has been getting through to AOL subscribers (including those on my BRADT, BROTT and BUNKER mailing lists. Nevertheless, the Rootsweb mailing administrators are working hard to resolve these problems, and hopefully this will happen shortly. In the meantime, thank you for your patience. I'll send messages to the list when I am informed of the update. -- Doug Detling DETLING and ROBLEE list administrator

    3. The Roblee mailing list at Rootsweb.com is now scheduled to be migrated to the new mail software on Tuesday, August 29 rather than Monday as previously thought. It is apparent that the migration schedule was a bit too optimistic but the administrators and volunteers are doing a great job of responding to issues so that by the time the ROBLEE list is moved, I doubt there will be many problems. I have only had one glitch in moving 3 lists, but I count myself lucky. If any of you are related (as some of us are to BRADT and BROTT lines), you might wish to join those lists to see how the new software works (though you'll probably see little difference). If so, let me know and I'll sub you. -- Doug Detling ROBLEE Administrator

    1. Jane Penman (Mrs. Joseph Robblee)
    2. Edna Cudmore
    3. Jane Penman, was the wife of Joseph Robblee of Tryon, Prince Edward Island. According to postings on the Robblee Digest, Jane was supposedly born in Charlottetown, PEI see Bob's posting below: Was she born in Ch'town or did she die there? Does anybody have any information on when her father, David Penman arrived on PEI and from where. I am descendend from George Penman, supposedly a brother to David Penman. They were both born in Torryburn, Fife, Scotland. According to Lucy Maude Montgomery, her ancestor George Penman came from New England and was a United Empire Loyalist and a paymaster with Lord Rollo. Her two great grandmothers were both daughters of George Penman, namely Ann/Nancy, who married Donald Montgomery and Elizabeth/Betsey, who married David Murray of Bedeque. Benjamin Cole of Bedeque, who married Isabella Robbins, was also a stepson of George Penman. George's third wife was the widow, Mary Cole and they lived at Richmond Bay, Lot 13 in PEI. I would be pleased to share any Penman family info with fellow researchers and hopefully we will find out how the Penman brothers arrived on PEI. Thank you, Edna Cudmore Ch'town, PEI Canada Good Morning, Shirley, I believe that I can help you with information on Jane Penman, b 1783 - 28 Nov 1864, in Charlottetown, married Joseph Robblee, who died in 1828 in Tryon, PEI. Thomas Gamble was a witness to part of Joseph Robblee's will and the PEI marriage records show her marrying him 13 Jan 1830. Hutchinson's Directory of 1861 lists Thomas Gamble, Cloth Dresser, aged 21-45, in Charlottetown living with a woman 60+. My thoughts would be Jane, now a widow, and a son by the same name as her second husband. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other Rob[b]lee connections. Both families seem to have lived opposite each other in PEI and NB. HOpe to hear from you soon. Bob Robblee

    2. Mona Rhone
    3. Does anyone have information on Franklin Alonzo Robblee, b 1834, PEI, son of John Robblee and Mary Ann Howatt? I can offer information on his descendants (with sources) but have yet to prove the connection with his ancestors. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Mona Robblee Rhone, Hamden, CT

    1. David Barney's daughter Frances Barney Roblee
    2. judy breck
    3. If anyone has details on Frances' ancestry, I would very much appreciate knowing those details. Frances married Milo R. Roblee. The were the parents of my father's mother Olive Roblee Breck. [Posted per Doug's request to test the Rootsweb migration - but getting any details on my great-grandma Frances would be great! I have tried to prove a couple of times that her father David Barney is a descendent of the Nantucket Barneys, but have not been able to do so conclusively.] Judy -- Judy Breck http://goldenswamp.com 212-734-1899 330 East 85th Street, Apt. 1B New York NY 10028

    1. Update on Rootsweb mailing lists migration - CORRECTED
    2. Douglas Detling
    3. A few minutes ago, I accidentally sent an unproofed message to the Roblee-L mailing list. The corrected text is included below: Most of you will have received an e-mail message (or perhaps several if you subscribe to multiple lists) from Rootsweb regarding the migration of the Roblee e-mail list to new servers and mailing handling software. The migration will be transparent for most users. Some work is necessary on my part as the list administrator (actually it doesn't mean very much work but attention to a few details). In preparation for the ROBLEE mailing list migration at Rootsweb (now scheduled for Monday, August 28), it would be helpful to clean up our e-mail subscribers list for bad addresses. One way to do that would be for 4 or 5 of you list members who may not have posted any material in some time to send a query to the list (Roblee-L@rootsweb.com). That will generate enough mailing list traffic to produce one or two digests so that I will get info on bad e-mail addresses, and I can delete them manually before the automatic movement of the lists takes place later this month. If you have a few minutes in the next day or so and could post a query, that would be helpful. Thanks. -- Doug Detling

    3. Good Morning, Debby, As usual, sorting the family papers into some semblance of order is quite a chore. Thomas H. Robblee's first wife was Anna Mahan and thery were married in the USA. Now as to his second wife, Cora. Was her maiden name Summer, and her first husband, Warman? The IGI records their first marriage in 1895 in the USA. Years ago, I corresponded with George H. Clark and I have included his family with ours. Jane Penman Robblee was Jonathan's sister. The others mentioned are from the Annapolis branch of the family. Hope you get the gedcom open. Hope to hear from you soon. My mailing address is 2987 Main Street Moncton, New Brunswick E4J2J8 My brain is going in circles trying to sort this out! I have most of my family files on an old XT computer in DOS. I will send you family group sheets from it if you will give me your smail address. I see that there is still more to sort about Jonathan and Sarah's family. Bob ----- Original Message ----- From: Debby Bulmer-Raby To: Roblee-L@RootsWeb.com Cc: Debbie Geneology ; Bob Robblee Sent: Sunday, August 13, 2006 9:25 AM Subject: Hannah Belle Price Robblee Hello Cousins, I am currently going through a box of letters, pictures, etc. They once belonged to Julia Duke (1908-1985), daughter of Hanna Belle Robblee Duke Warman and some of Sally Robblee Voight ( Died 1971) daughter of George Robblee..son of Sarah Jane Price Robblee. Unfortunately they are all combined in the one box. I have a partial letter written by Helen Redmond Easler daughter of May Robblee and John Redmond. There is no date on the letter nor to whom it is addressed, and part of this delicate paper is ripped away. " ...I think it would be nicer for you and Grace to write yourselves to Mrs. Margaret B. King, Sussex, Kings County, N.B. She is Secretary of the whole thing. That bunch of the family trace their ancestry back to Edmund Price born in N.Y. June 14, 1757. He married Jane Webb, daughter of George and Jerusha Webb of Woodbridge, N. Jersey. I have a copy of the will of Edmund Price and his children were George Webb Price, Allen Price, James Price, Edmund John, Dennis and the daughters Jane, Phoebe, Mary, Elizabeth, Deborah and Jerusha. Mama wrote me that our grandmother, Sarah Cushing was born in Hingham, a descendant of Mathew Cushing who came over in the Mayflower. Papa once had a list of all the names from Mathew Cushing down to Sarah Cushing. They can be obtained in the Hingham records as Papa got them there. Sarah Cushing married William Price of N.Y. and they went to Sussex, N.B. to live. Both died in their 86th year. Sarah Cushing's Aunt Nancy was Abraham L! incoln's mother. Mama says that her own uncle William Price was the dead image pf Abraham Lincoln. I think your father can tell you more. Why don't you go down to Hingham and get a copy of everything and then you can get the records of Grandma Robblee and your father and will have a dear ( or clear- can't make out the writing) chance to join the Mayflower Club and perhaps the D. O. R. ( or D. A. I....again can't make out). You would enjoy those things here. When you write to Mrs. King give her any information you can. I have an idea this Edmund Price, who married Jane Webb, was a brother to William Price who married Sarah Cushing, Well, I must quit writing as I have just got my bread out of the oven and now must get dishes done before the water gets cold. Give my love to all the folks there and to the folks in N.Y. when you write. Love Helen and Hollis" Hope this is of use to someone! ..partial letter - no date but written by Julia Duke " J.W.Duke Hannah Belle Robblee Clarke Wallace Duke Almedia Mabel Duke Thomas Irvine Duke Julia Cora May Duke Jennie Kathleen Duke Maude Mildred Duke So you know your mother's family. So we have many relatives. I do not know how many Prices - my grandmother was Sarah, she had a sister Betsy & one married to a Wallace. We must be related to people in Moncton we do not know. It would be fun to find out. Have you located my mother's picture yet- the one with me when I was 12 or 13 it was real good. She wore glasses & a plush hat. I had on one too. Love Julia" an old typed paper ..no date. " Near Relatives of Abe Lincoln Several Moncton Women Cousins of The Former United States President The Boston Globe of Recent date contained the following paragraph:- Miss Mabel Redmond of Clinton Mass., residing at Leighton Avenue and a student of South Lancaster Academy is, it was learned to-day a distant relative of Abraham Lincoln. Miss Redmond's great grandmother whose name was Price was a sister to Nancy Hanks the mother of Abe Lincoln. Mrs. Sarah Price Robblee is the grandmother of Miss Mabel Redmond who is a bright studious girl, standing high in her classes is a favorite among the students in the Academy. Mrs. Sarah Price Robblee referred to in Boston Globe paragraph resides with her daughter Mrs. John W. Duke, Dominion Street this city. She has lived in Moncton nearly all her life, being the relict of the late Jonathan Robblee a former well known I.C.R. employee. Mrs. Robblee's maiden name was Price and she is the sister of the late Tyler Price who spent a greater part of his life in the city and parish of Moncton. Mrs. Sarah Robblee has two sisters living in Moncton Mrs. Thomas Mitton and Mrs. Henry Wallace both of whom reside on High Street. The mother of the Moncton woman referred to was a sister to Nancy Hanks, Abe Lincoln's mother, which would make Mrs. Robblee and her brothers and sisters first cousins of the distinguished dead president of the United States whose birthday anniversary was recently celebrated by the republic. Miss Mabel Redmond referred to in the Boston Globe is a daughter of John Redmond a former Provincialist who is married to one of Mrs. Robbleee's daughters. Besides Mrs. John Duke of this city, Mrs. Robblee has another married daughter Mrs. George McDonald residing in Lewisville. Her sons George, Irving and Thomas live in different parts of the United States. ****" Debby
