    3. List member Gloria Waldron Hukle sent this message to the list yesterday, but it was sent in HTML-format and did not make it to the list (Reminder to those who may not have known: Rootsweb messages must in plain-text). I have reformatted and sent it through. This message will also be posted on the Roblee web site at www.robleesonline.org/Flushing_Remonstrance.pdf as a downloadable PDF file. The connection to the Roblees is through Resolved Waldron, who was sheriff to Peter Stuyvesant, director general of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. Here's the text of the news release: For more information contact Donna Cartelli, Executive Director, BHHS 212-439-9515, 718-930-0134 or dcartelli@bownehouse.org <mailto:dcartelli@bownehouse.org> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 12, 2007 Freedom of Religion in America to be Celebrated: A Call for the Descendants of the Signers of the Flushing Remonstrance, Peter Stuyvesant, Too On December 27, 1657, thirty townspeople of Flushing, Queens signed a "remonstrance" addressed to Peter Stuyvesant, the director general of the Dutch colony, New Netherland. The two-page letter, set down by a local cleric, protested Stuyvesant's ban on the rights of Quakers to assemble and worship in the colony. Significantly, it further demanded that all people-regardless of religion or ethnic background-be given "free egresse and regresse unto our Town, and houses, as God shall persuade our consciences." Stuyvesant ignored the Flushing Remonstrance, as it came to be known, but its principles were later tested by John Bowne, an English immigrant and prosperous landowner in Flushing. Although not a Quaker himself, Bowne was married to Quaker minister Hannah Feake Bowne. In defiance of Stuyvesant's ban, Bowne allowed people of her faith to meet and worship in their Flushing farmhouse. For this "crime," Stuyvesant imprisoned Bowne in 1662 and banished him to Holland. Refusing to capitulate, Bowne argued his case before the Dutch West India Company. In 1663, the company revoked Stuyvesant's ban, and ordered him "to allow everyone to have his own belief, as long as he behaves quietly." The men who signed the Flushing Remonstrance, and John Bowne, risked their lives and their livelihoods by challenging Stuyvesant. Their heroic stand is widely acknowledged as having contributed to the principles codified more than a century later, in 1791, in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights, which guarantees religious and political freedom to all citizens. In honor of the 350th anniversary of the Flushing Remonstrance, the Bowne House Historical Society is seeking descendants of the men who signed the Flushing Remonstrance. The signers were: Nicolas Blackford George Clere Elias Doughtie Edward Farrington Tobias Feake Antonie Feild Robert Field, Sr. Robert Field, Jr. John Foard Edward Griffine Edward Hart Nathaniel Hefferd Benjamin Hubbard John Mastine Michael Milner William Noble Nick Colas Parsell William Pidgion Henry Semtell Richard Stocton John Store Edward Tarne William Thorne, Sr. William Thorne, Jr. John Townesend Henry Townsend Nathaniel Tue Micah Tue Phillip Udall George Wright Please note that the spellings of the above surnames are "old style," and that modern spellings may be different. For example, descendants of the signer Richard Stocton may spell the name "Stockton." The Committee is also interested in finding descendants of Peter Stuyvesant and his sheriff Resolved Waldron. Descendants should send their information to Flushing Remonstrance c/o Bowne House Historical Society, 37-01 Bowne Street, Flushing, New York, 11354 or by email to dcartelli@bownehouse.org <mailto:dcartelli@bownehouse.org> . Please include mailing address, email address, and phone number, along with the name of the signer, and the line of descent. The search for the descendants of the men who signed the Flushing Remonstrance is part of The Office of the President of the Borough of Queens initiative to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the document. The Borough President's Office created the Education Committee of the Flushing Remonstrance, whose mission is to increase public awareness, to establish a special public school curriculum in 2007-2008, and to organize a major event to commemorate the importance of the document to the Constitution of the United States. The Flushing Remonstrance, which resides in the New York State Archives, is widely acknowledged as the foundation for the principles codified in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights, which guarantees religious and political freedom to all citizens. In addition to Bowne House Historical Society, the Committee is represented by the New York City Board of Education, Queens Museum, Queens Public Library, and Queens Historical Society, among others. To learn more about the Flushing Remonstrance, please visit the website of the Bowne House Historical Society, www.bownehouse.org <http://www.bownehouse.org/> . ## The Bowne House Historical Society is a 501 ( c ) 3 non-profit organization, which owns and operates the Bowne House 37-01 Bowne Street, Flushing, New York 11354. The Society's mission includes the preservation of the house, its collections and grounds for its historical and educational interest, for its significance to the history of New York City and for its importance in the establishment of the fundamental principles of freedom of conscience and religious liberty. Bowne House was built in 1661 by John Bowne, whose courageous stand in defense of religious freedom, resulting in his arrest and imprisonment by Governor Peter Stuyvesant, helped establish the principles later codified in the Bill of Rights. The Bowne House and its message are unique in America. Few house museums date from the seventeenth century. The house itself is the best-preserved example of Anglo-Dutch residential architecture in the country and it continues to occupy its original site. The museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated New York City Landmark. ##

    2. Bob Robblee
    3. Good Morning, All, I have been going over the comments from 2 weeks ago to the list. It appears to me that John B. Richards b 1828 would have been their son. I would suspect that John and Phebe lived together prior to marrying. Are they recorded in the 1830 Census? Did Nathaniel have a daughter Phebe? d young? If so, she does not fit the census record. Would the Phebe, dismissed in New Haven to Bristol, in 1828, been pregnant? Which of the sons of Reuben and Phebe passed through or stayed in the New Haven area of VT after 1810? Just some questions rattling in my mind. HOpe to hear from you soon. Bob

    3. Good Morning, All, Welcome, Gloria, to the list. Interesting that the Waldron family emigrated up the Hudson from Long Island. I hope that you can add details to what for me has been a sketchy branch of the family. All I have is Etta Roblee, b 1869, daughter of Hugh W. Roblee and Sophia Russell, married Walter Waldron. One son, Lester D. What else do you have about Etta's family and what might you have for Hugh and Sophia? The Waldron background is interesting in that it begins on Long Island. As far as we know, the Robblees arrived there around 1725, and emigrated up the Hudson River as well. A slightly different pathway, but some ended up in Warren Co. NY. HOpe to hear from you soon. 3. The Flint Michigan mention was of interest to me. My ancestor, Hannah Roblee, daughter of Samuel Roblee and Mariam Hinckley and wife of David S. Daniels died in Flint Michigan on 17 July 1889. I believe she was living with her sone Joshua T. Daniels. -----Original Message----- From: roblee-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:roblee-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Alger and Walcott Family Sent: Saturday, February 03, 2007 7:52 PM To: roblee@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ROBLEE] Phebe? I missed this when I posted last weekend. Thanks for the detail on Phebe Ann. She is almost certainly the daughter of the Samuel and Marion Roblee you mention as being buried beside her son. I cannot find any sign of an Alvin Crippen in earlier censes, or on the internet. I agree that Mary may be the daughter of Philip and Eunice, although the details are not a perfect fit with census records for Philip. The 1820 Cenus records Nathaniel and John Roblyer at Ulysses, Thomkins, NY. I have not found any Nathaniels in the Roblyer lineage. Do we know the exact dates of the various censuses? People might have been missed around these times. I think the above Phebe and Polly were the daughters of Phillip and Eunice Robblee. The 1820 Census record for Nathanael Robblee is interesting. Would the second male over 45 possibly be his brother, Luther? And were the 2 males under 10, Julius Scott and William Orson? Did not their father, William? pass on in 1820? 3. I believe that this is Phebe, daughter of Samuel Robblee/Miriam Hinckley. Mariam died 1841 in Burke, Franklin, NY. Samuel died 1864 in the same place. Both are buried in the Barnum-Wright Cemetery in that town. So, I just tried to find Samuel in the 1850 census. I cannot find him with soundex search, so decided to search for men with first name Samuel living in Burke. This is interesting -- I find the following family: Phebe Crippen, age 37, b. NY Samuel Roblie (?), age 73, b. NH Mary Crippen, age 16, b. NY Phebe Crippen, age 9, b. NY I had an estimated dom for Phebe as 1851. Leaving the NH pob aside for Samuel, this looks like it could be our Samuel living with daughter Phebe who was then a widow of Mr. Crippen. I don't find Samuel in 1840, nor a family named Crippen in Burke. I find this note: Sources (n.b., the Town[ship] of Burke was formed from the Town[ship] of Chateaugay in 1844). In 1840: David Crippen Chateaugay, Franklin, New York Ransom Crippen Chateaugay, Franklin, New York Then I find in the Ft. Covington (Burke, NY) Cemetery: Crippen Ransom B. 1818 1884 Crippen Miriam (Stiles) 1822 1884 wife of Ransom B. Crippen (and dau of Ezra Stiles?) Phebe's sister Harriet m. Ezra Stiles. They had a daughter Miriam, named after their mother Miriam? Okay, that's all I can find for now. Assuming that Phebe m. 1st Mr. Crippen, I can't identify Mr. Crippen at the moment.
