Phylis writes that the the pronounciation of the Roblee name was confusing to her, as other families pronounced it differently. People in my own family pronounced and pronounce it differently. We always said "Rob-lee" but one of my cousins pronounces it "Rowe-blee". I have caught myself in later years saying it both ways. One old guy I used to visit with called my Mom and Aunt Eleanor "Them Rub-lee girls". He said they were "spunky and pretty" which was very true. JEAN
It is interesting that you have Roblee and Hoag connected. I have several distant cousins Roblee My great grandmother was Roblee and my husband;s mother maiden name was Hoag...all of NY. Wondering if your Hoag had ties back to NY? Gloria Gloria Waldron Hukle, Author Manhattan Seeds of the Big Apple P.O. In out house we called it RUBE-Lee I had a 1st cousin who had the name as a first name. Then we "found" the "original" French name it was pronounced in our house Ra-PAL-Gee or RAP-a-Lee Bergetta On Mar 11, 2007, at 7:37 AM, PMaeveReed@aol.com wrote: > When I was growing up, it was confusing to me that there were > people who > pronounced their name > Rowe- Blee. > My grandmother said there was a family connection with them but she > always > pronounced the family name > Robb - Blee.
In some ways this is a "I say tomato, you say tomato" thing. And, as Doug says in his message, there are many, many spelling variations and no doubt the same applies to pronunciation. However, some of the major splits we know about are these: In Huntington, NY records (1730s) -- we find Rublier, Rublear, Rublere and Rubleer. Rublear is the variation used in church records; other variations appear in land and other records at fair frequency. This is the earliest spelling we know about. And, we don't find it elsewhere, or later. Then, we begin to see the family go up the Hudson River, we see some other variations in land and tax records. Including Rappelyea, Rubeley. Then, they land in Lanesborough, MA before the Revolution. This is all within a fairly short span of time. About 40 years. The Lanesborough records consistently show the spelling as Robblee in the early records. Now we see a split that distinquishes the major branches of the family that we know about (this is not including the other branches we can't yet connect, that settled in NY state). The Revolutionary War played a major role in some of this. The two loyalist brothers went to Nova Scotia. They retained the spelling Robblee, and that is used by most descendants to this day. William and Keturah's children who settled in VT used Rublee, and that spelling is used to this day. This is my line. One of their sons, William, stayed in Lanesborough, and seemed to have used Rubblee, but the next generation, who went to Ellington, NY used Rublee, and still do. Reuben went to Granville, NY and used Robblee. However, within a generation, those two Bs got to be too much, and most of the descendants used Roblee, again to this day. Why the Michigan family used Rablee, I have no idea! Hope this helps. Cindy p.s. Hopefully folks have seen my summary on the Roblee web page.
When I was growing up, it was confusing to me that there were people who pronounced their name Rowe- Blee. My grandmother said there was a family connection with them but she always pronounced the family name Robb - Blee. One brother in the Cornwall/Cornwell family changed his name due to a family feud and this led to a change in the pronunciation. If our ancestor's name origin is French, difficulties in pronunciation, illiteracy, or a wish to Anglicize it to "fit in" after the French and Indian Wars may have led to the change. Has anyone ever tried to trace it back and see when and where the split may have occurred? Just curious. The fact that there were more than 50 spelling variations of folks who called themselves Roblee has led to enormous difficulties, and I doubt whether we will ever know the real origins of the surname or its official pronunciation. But we should not give up hope to do so. Jim, I think it highly possible that Mary (wife of Benjamin Jakway) is also a daughter of Samuel and Mariam Robblee. I copied Sally's name from someone's information, but will have to research and determine how authoritative it is. I have seen records that show Mariam Hinkley as Marion Hinkle, but believe that Mariam Hinkley is her name. I don't know if Mariam Stiles (wife of Ransom Crippen) is a daughter of Ezra and Harriet Stiles. Agree with you that she would have been a young mother at age 18. I have always thought that Smith was a male. See link for photographs of Rablee graves in Bristol Cemetery, Flint Twp., Genesee County, Michigan. _http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/michigan/genesee.htm_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/michigan/genesee.htm) I believe Mr. Crippen's name was Calvin (not Alvin), see link below to pictures of his grave in Barnum Cemetery, Burke, Franklin Co., New York. Also, includes a picture of Simeon Calvin Montague's grave. While I cannot be sure of the date, it says it is 26 May 1865. Shows Crippen, Montague and Robblee graves, to include a photo of Mariam Hinkley Robblee's grave. Makes reference to Samuel's grave but says that marker is missing. _http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~frgen/franklin/burke/barnum/barnum.h tm_ (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~frgen/franklin/burke/barnum/barnum.htm) Jay <BR><BR><BR>**************************************<BR> AOL now offers free email to everyone. JAY OAKLEY and Roblee Group: In the placement of your material into my brief genealogy for Samuel, I have a number of questions and discrepancies. We have: Mary, daughter of Samuel and Mariam Robblee. b. 14 Jul 1811, d. 26 Aug 1879 We did not have a Sally Rablee. b. 1804-1809. Mary married Benjamin Jakway. I have seen this name in other people’s reports. Do you think that Mary is the daughter of Samuel and Mariam? Mariam is also aka: Marion Hinkley? We have Mariam Styles , b. 1822, d. 1889 married to Ransom B. Crippen. Placed as daughter of Harriet and Ezra Styles. I can’t help but believe that she is misplaced. Is she actually Ezra’s brother’s wife? Or, Harriet had her as a very young wife. Is Smith Rablee a male or female? Have Calvin B. Crippen as being named ALVIN. Which is it? Simeon Calvin Montague: d. 26 May 1865. I have 20 May 1865. Which one do you believe is correct. Not many questions for this long a report. Bob -- You asked about Morgan A. Roblee. See what I have pieced together. I am not 100% certain that he was the son of Amby, but it looks pretty good. Last weekend I was at my sister's. She has broadband. Those census pages opened instantly! What a difference! She had to be out for a few hours, and I put the time to good use! That's how I found Morgan in Colorado. Cindy Generation One 1. Amby H.1 Roblee, b. est 1809 in Arlington, Bennington, VT?, (son of Reuben Robblee and Mary "Molly" Everts) d. aft 1880 in Leslie, Ingham, MI?. Amby Robblee was admitted to the Truthville Baptist Church in N. Granville 10 Sep 1831. On 17 Aug 1834, a letter of dismissal was granted. He was dropped from fellowship on 8 Jun 1838. He apparently went to Michigan where an Amby Roblee (Ambly H. Robier), age 40, was living in Bunker Hill, Ingham Co., in 1850 in the household of Thomas and Adaline Clough. In 1860, he is listed as A. H. Roblee, age 52, born in VT. He was living in Bunker Hill, Ingham Co., MI. In the home were M. A. Roblee, female, age 34, born in NY; J. W., male, age 13; M. H., male, age 11; and A. F., male, age 9, all born in Michigan. He was still there in 1870, listed as Amby Roblee, age 62, born in VT. His wife was Sarah, age 56, born in NY. Also in the home was Hattie A. Roblee, age 9, born in Michigan. Hattie may well be the child of Amby and Sarah. In 1880, he was living in Leslie, Ingham, MI with his wife Sarah. Note that his state of birth is given as Vermont. He married (1) Mary Ann LaBarr, 15 Apr 1855 in Bunker Hill, Ingham, MI?, b. abt 1826 in NY, d. bef 1863 in MI. Children: 2 i. J. W.2 Roblee, b. abt 1847 in Ingham Co, MI?. + 3 ii. Morgan A. Roblee b. Jan 1850. 4 iii. A. F. Roblee, b. abt 1851 in Ingham Co, MI?. 5 iv. Hattie A. Roblee, b. abt 1861 in Bunker Hill, Ingham, MI. He married (2) Sarah Cochran, 5 Jul 1863 in MI,1 b. abt 1813 in NY, d. aft 1880 in Leslie, Ingham, MI?. Generation Two 3. Morgan A.2 Roblee, (Amby H.1) b. Jan 1850 in NY, d. 23 Jun 1917 in Delta Co., CO. Putting Morgan Roblee in this family is speculation, based on his marriage in Michigan. In 1870, Morgan and Vina Roblee were living in Girard, Branch, MI. Morgan was 19, and Vina only 14. They were living next door to George and Martha Webber, Vina's parents. Morgan's place of birth is given as NY. In 1880, Vina (Webber) Roblee was 23, living with her parents (George and Martha Webber), her brother Willard G. Webber (age 21) and her daughter Ida Roblee in Girard, Branch, MI. Ida was 9, born in Michigan. In 1907, she is listed as a dressmaker in the city directory for Coldwater, MI. She was living in Coldwater at the time of the 1900 census. She was 43, born Sep 1856. She was working as a dressmaker. Daughter Ida was living with her. She was 21, born Sep 1871. Vina's brother Willard Webber was living with them. Vina's marital status is listed as divorced. In 1910, Vina was living alone in Coldwater. Vina (Webber) Roblee married second, Daniel G. Parker, on 14 Jan 1915 in Coldwater, MI. Morgan Rublee appears to have removed to Colorado. In 1900, a Mr. Roblee was living in Ouray, Ouray C., CO. His first name is not clear, but may be Am. Was he using his middle name? Perhaps Amby? A Morgan A. Rublee was granted a land patent in Delta Co., Colorado on 31 Oct 1912. At the time of the 1910 census, he was living in Wayne, Delta Co., CO where he is clearly listed as Martin A. Roblee. He was 58, born in NY. He was a railway conductor. His wife was Mary, age 50, born in PA. Both Morgan and Mary said they were 30 when they first married. A daughter Ina, age 23, born in CO, was in the home. Her father was born in NY and her mother in PA, so she would appear to be the child of this couple. Mary had two children, one living. A Morgan A. Roblee died 23 Jun 1917 and is buried in Delta Cemetery, Delta Co., CO. In the same cemetery is Mary Roblee, died 14 Oct 1922. A second wife? He married (1) Vina C. Webber, 20 Jan 1870 in MI,1 b. Sep 1856 in MI, (daughter of George W. Webber and Martha _____). Children: 6 i. Ida3 Roblee, b. Sep 1871 in Girard, Branch, MI?. He married (2) Mary _____, est 1882, b. Feb 1852 in PA, d. 14 Oct 1922 in Delta Co., CO. Children: 7 ii. Ina Roblee, b. Aug 1884 in CO.
Good Morning, Welcome, Jay and thank you for the addtional information on Samuel Robblee and his descendents. Have you been in contact with Jim Fortier, a member of this list, and also, a descendent of Samuel Robblee? In the 1850 Census, Cindy Walcott found an addtional daughter, Phebe Crippen, 9, at home with Phebe. I have 3 more children for Ezra and Harriet Stiles which I believe came from Jim Fortier. Miriam b 1822 Ezra W. b 1827 Ann Hale b 1846 The additonal details on the marriages and family of Nathan Rablee filled in many blanks. However, I have a stray in the Michigan records who I have not placed. Morgan A. Roblee, b 1851, married Vina Weber in 1870 at Girard, Branch, MI. Is he a son of Nathan? I also have a marriage for Clarence Kinion Rablee and a son, Geo. Nathan. Did his sister Alma Eliza marry Henry Ketzler? As always, more information provides answers but as always, still several questions. HOpe to hear from you soon. Bob
Myah is an unusual name, but very pretty. What a nice big girl! Enjoy both your new grandaughters, Bob. JEAN

In 1867, he again moved to Michigan and settled in the town of Flint. He was the frist inventor of the sewing machine used in sewing boots and shoes, which invention he sold to E. A. Forbush & Company of Boston. (History and Genealogy of the Montague Family of America, Compiled by George William Montague, revised and edited by William L. Hi Lee -- Your mother was the daughter of one of Genevieve's siblings? Who was she, and whom did she marry? Cindy -----Original Message----- From: roblee-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:roblee-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Lee Carpenter Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2007 9:52 AM To: ROBLEE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ROBLEE] Genevieve Roblee I came across an archive from Brenda Hopkins related to Genevieve Roblee. Genevieve was my mom's aunt, and I am sure that my mom has some information that she might be willing to share. I found this journal that refers to Alma, Henry and Genevieve. http://www.lcmm.org/images/img_education/img_educator_resources/bartley_jo urnal/bartley_pg_1201-1413.pdf I have also found some information on Henry and a few of the churchs that he was a pastor at. The one in Glen Ellyn, Illinois that he served at had a fire and was rebuilt, but the records are gone. There is one in Sycamore, Illinois that has some information on him. I am in the process of filling in the blanks before all the information and pictures become disconnected from the people. --------------------------------- Sucker-punch spam with award-winning protection. All I know about Florence Allen is that she was born 20 Feb 1864 probably in North Bend, Washington, NY, dau. of Marcus Bartlett Allen and Hannah Barker. On Barnard: Edward Barnard was "of Granville, NY" (Carpenter, 1949, page 5). In 1880, he was living in Ft. Ann, NY with his parents. He and Marion lived in Granville. In 1910, they just had the one son, Norman, age 10. Apparently he was their only child. The Barnards continued to live in Granville through 1930, and presumably died there. Marion's mother was named Helen. I wonder if there was some kind of name mix-up in the notes. In notes from Florence Allen, wife of Joseph Henry Roblee, possibly sent to Beulah Roblee, wife of William Wallace Roblee, she mentions that her sister was the mother of Thomas Northup, orthopedic doctor of Morristown, NJ. Does anyone else know of this tie? Also, in those notes, she mentions Mrs. Helen Roblee Bernard of Granville. Did Marion Roblee, married Edward Bernard, have a daughter? Or is this someone else of whom I am not aware? HOpe to hear from you soon.
