Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home for Mr. James Robinson, 87, who departed this life Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012, at Orange Village Care Center. Mr. Robinson, affectionately known as "Dr. J & R," was born Aug. 6, 1925, in Charlotte, North Carolina, a son of George and Carrie Robinson. He was owner/operator of "Dr. J & R. Tire Service." James had a passion for servicing tires. His successful business ran a AAA towing service as well as towing trucks. He also did off the road tire service for large major companies. In the late 50s and 60s, James was an advocate for providing a place for youth in Shenango Valley, along with Bobby Hammond, holding "record hops" at the Rumpus Room. He also traveled to Lawrence and Mahoning Counties doing activities for youth at the Goldie Roy Arena. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He leaves to cherish his memory, three children, Deanna (George) Creamer-Smith of Brookfield, Katrina Davis and Michelle Drummond, both of Youngstown; two sisters, Ann Saunders and Wendy Hughes, both of Youngstown; seven grandchildren, including Kevin (Tasha) Robinson of Youngstown, whom he reared; 12 great-grandchildren; a niece and nephew, Kim (Eric) Jackson and Joseph (LaToya) Saunders Jr.; and a host of family and friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the former Emma Friendly, who passed away Nov. 30, 1996; a daughter, Evelyn Robinson-Williams; two sisters, Lugenia Huff Travers and Georgia Mae Robinson; and a grandson, LaMarcus Williams.
