I got the details about the trip in Togo, thanks to internet and to some history archives (letters he wrote to his boss Booker T. Washington...) As you said in your mail, John and Grace were his parents. One of my cousins gave me the same informations without giving me the sources, so it made me careful about it. Now, I think it is the right information. I'm sure he's born in Bennettsville (according to an autobiography by himself included in a book) and went to school after in Tuskegee. My grand'ma told us he was from Alabama but I think it's because he spent most of his adulthood there.
