Billie Redding Lewis, in her book "Ancestors along the James," makes a pretty convincing case based on land records that the ancestor of the Thomas Robinson who married Elizabeth** ______ is another Thomas who was probably brought to Virginia by either James Place or Thomas Stegg ca. 1640. I have never seen any documentation, nor any mentions of possible documentation, to support the linkage of Thomas Robinson/Robertson with the Rev. William Robertson's family. I am willing to be persuaded that I am wrong on that point, but only if the persuader backs his or her argument with actual evidence -- not family group sheets that have taken on a life of their own in the netiverse. (I don't mean to disrespect the efforts of others, but after having to purge my ancestry of nearly 700 years' worth of ancestors when a old and widely published pedigree was proven to be a hoax, I have adopted a rather stringent b.s. filter in these matters.) Later, Dave ** Please do not use married names for women whose birth families are unknown. That only creates more confusion for others searching electronic databases whose quality is unknown and for which proper documentation is not provided. If the name is not known, leave it blank. His father was John Robinson, b. 1688 in Henrico Co., m. Tabitha Jones, b. 1702. John's father was Thomas Robinson, b. 1658, in Henrico Co., and he married Elizabeth Robinson, b. 1666, in Henrico Co. Elizabeth was the daughter of William Robinson, b. 1634 in Virginia, and Elizabeth Tully, b. 1638 in Norfolk, Virginia, so her maiden name was Robinson, and she married a Robinson. But the parentage of Thomas raises questions we've been unable to resolve. In every tree I have found, Thomas' parents are given as the Rev. William Robertson, b. 1620 in Scotland, and Eleanor Pitcairn, b. 1634 in Scotland. They married in 1652 in Ayrshire, Scotland, and after the first couple of children emigrated to America where they had 7 or 8 more. The problem for us is the name Robertson. If Thomas Robinson is the son of the Robertsons, he is the only one of their offspring to have changed his name. But did he change his name, or have people plugged him in there because the Robertson's had a matching son? After scanning through 496 board entries brought up by asking for "Robertson/Robinson," I understand that there has been frequent name changing, and or confusion about the two names even well into the 19th century. But how do we know that this Thomas Robinson is the son of the Robertsons? I can find no reference to wills or other documents that might help. Family trees focusing on other children of the Robertsons which happen to list all the children have Thomas, but with Robertson as a last name, and since he isn't their focus, no further information is provided, such as his spouse, which might tie them together. To further confuse maters, Thomas and Elizabeth's children are frequently given as Robertsons, except for our John who is always a Robinson. But in the will of John Robinson, it consistently refers to him and his children with the name Roberson. And this will was found in the desk of Field Robinson Sr. Sorry this was so long, but can anyone shed any light on this? Is the Thomas Robinson who married Elizabeth Robinson really the son of William and Eleanor Pitcairn Robertson? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. They lived in Portal on the border, where they had two children. In 1909 Agnes returned to Norway with her two children, pregnant with a child who was born in January 1910. Whether she left her husband, or whether he died and she was a widow we do not know. There were stories circulating in the family about Lucian being killed in a mine, or in a railway accident, but we have no documentation of this. We would be grateful for any information about Lucian, his life, his death and his background. He is believed to have been Canadian or of UK/Canadian birth. Author: Kcascade Surnames: Robinson, Robertson, Gardner Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.robinson/10215/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I recently discovered the following information: *** Robinson, Seneca Born : About 1839 in Ohio Burial :Unknown Seneca Robinson, a farmer from DuQuoin, Perry Co., IL stood 5' 9" tall with brown hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion. He was born in Athens County, Ohio. Served during the Civil War with the Union Army, with Co. I, 6th Illinois Cavalry *** I believe Seneca (born in 1835) to be a brother to my ancestor Rose (born in 1831). Rose's siblings that I'm pretty sure about besides Seneca are Susanna (born in 1833) Catharine (born in 1837) and William (born in 1839). Other siblings I'm not as sure about but seem likely are Isaac (born in 1829 living in Perry County, IL at the same time) and potentially a George H. (Robertson or Robinson) who enlisted in the civil war as well and was born in Athens County as well as Seneca was but enlisting in Perry County, just like Seneca was. Here is George's information: *** Robertson, George H.[ Robinson ] Born : About 1842 in Ohio Burial : Unknown George H. Robertson, a farmer from DuQuoin, Perry Co., IL stood 5' 7" tall with brown/black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion. He was born in Athens County, Ohio. Served during the Civil War with the Union Army, with Co. I, 6th Illinois Cavalry Enlisted on November 5, 1861 in DuQuoin, Perry Co., IL Mustered in as a Private on November 19, 1861 Reenlisted on March 10, 1864 in Germantown, Tennessee. Mustered in on March 30, 1864 in Memphis, Tennessee. Promoted to Saddler Mustered out on November 5, 1865 in Selma, Alabama. *** Now it gets a bit more interesting, I do know of a George Robinson living with his mother Elizabeth in the 1850 census of Perry County, IL however my notes say "*Elizabeth Robinson was 42, on page 87, she was born in New York? with a Son George Robinson who was 9 and born in Illinois." So if this is the same George, then he could have been born in either location and one source is wrong (which wouldn't surprise me). At any rate, I'm desperately trying to learn who Rose's parents were. It seems likely that this Elizabeth may have been her mother, but I have no solid proof. Also when I look in Athens County, OH, I find a couple of marriages preceding Isaac's birth, but the only 2 that seem likely don't appear to pan out (John C. Robinson married Eliza Gardner in 1826, and at first this seemed likely until I saw a post which listed their seven children which do not match to the above[the list was given as Margaret, Polly, Francis C., Sarah F., James L., Delilah Jane, and Lewis]; and William Robinson married Mary Robinson in 1829 which I find evidence of a William Robinson hanging around Athens County for years to come which would conflict with his children being in Illinois I would suspect). So I'm beginning to feel that the parents were possibly married elsewhere and came to Athens county. I have yet to search the 1830 census, which I hope to do soon, but wanted to get this out there. At any rate, if any of these names, etc ... match up to anyone's research, I'd really appreciate comparing notes. I have pretty much all of Rose's descendants. Although these two brothers both married women named Judith, they definitely did NOT marry the same woman as some seem to think.
