My Great Aunt Mary's research showed he drowned between 1880..1885 in the Missouri River, which, if accurate, would mean he died when Henry was only 1 year old. Also, I had that both Henry and Ella Edith Jones died in Weeping Water, Cass, Nebraska, USA, while Ella was born in Plattsmouth and Henry was born in Medicine Lodge, Barber, Kansas, USA (though that should probably be reconfirmed via official records since I got this over the phone a few years ago). We still do not know how the scrap book ended up in Chicago, nor do we know why the person choose to clip those particular items from the various papers, but we now know who John was and further more we have been able to find the son of Herman who was John's son. We will get the book to that person once we have finished working with it. The relatives have given me lots of new information and I am filling in the tree to make sense of all the news clippings. I found the history of John N. Robinson written up in a Railroad Magazine which gives a good over all description of his life up to 1893. ========================================================= The Railway agent and station agent: A monthly magazine..., Volumes 9-10 By National Association of Railway Agents ... THE STATION AGENT July 1893 John N. Robinson, district passenger and land agent at Milwaukee, Wis., was born at Basking Ridge, Somerset County, N.J., September 28 1847. He came west when nineteen years of age and settled at Fort Scott, Kansas. A short time afterwards entered the Illinois Central Railroad at Amboy, Ill., as a brakeman, resigning in one year to take a position on the Des Moines Valley Railroad at Des Moines, Iowa, as conductor, and remained with that company and its successor, the C.R.I. & P. Railroads, until February, 1879, when he resigned to take a position with the Wisconsin Central Railway, as conductor, between Milwaukee and Stevens Point. In the spring of 1882, he entered the service of the passenger department, as city passenger and ticket agent at Milwaukee, and was promoted to traveling passenger agent of that line, August 21st, 1885, with headquarters at Milwaukee. Entered the service of the Northern Pacific Railroad, May 1st, 1889, as district passenger and land agent, with h! eadquarters at Milwaukee, having been placed in charge of the territory comprising the State of Wisconsin and the upper peninsula of Michigan, which position he still holds. 3. 2 Responses to HEWICK 1. Linda Spiker says: November 18, 2011 at 2:14 am Hello, I enjoyed your page. My g-g-grandfather was John William Robinson, but we know nothing about him. The family legend is that he arrived in Carroll County (then Grayson C0unty) VA, via stagecoach, where he remained, married, and had a family of about six or seven children. It is said that even his wife knew nothing about him or his family, or where he came from. I talked with a Robinson man several years ago who worked for the Department of Agriculture and he told me that many of the Virginia Robinsons were reluctant to talk about themselves due to the “scandal” of treasurer Robinson. John William was b. c.1812, m. 1840 to Martha (Patsy) Jane Gardner of Hillsville VA. They were in VA in 1870 census, but by 1880, he and Jane had moved to Union (Lawrence County) Ohio, where he died c.1886. A cousin, the late Dr. Randolph Chitwood, local genealogist and historian, said he suspected that our John came from Christopher Robinson’s line. Do you have anyone in your Robinson genealogy whose son “disappeared”? 1. Helen  - hewick1@yahoo.com / Robinson Rootsweb Admin

    1. [ROBINSON] Clara Robinson Adams of Louisville mystery
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: GabrielRotello54 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.robinson/10229/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi - I am researching a family mystery and I thought that perhaps someone on the Robinson thread might be able to help. My grandfather William Princeton Adams was born in Boston in the 1880s. His always said that his father was named William Porter Adams of Boston and that his mother was Clara Robinson of Kentucky, most probably of Louisville. She may have been Clara E Robinson. At some point in the early 1900s when my grandfather was in his teens, his father died, followed shortly by his mother and his only sibling, a sister probably named Christine Mary. The circumstances are very obscure, but may have involved some kind of tragedy. He would never speak of it. He died in 1983, always refusing to speak of what happened or say anything about his parents. However, he once told my grandmother that after his parents' deaths, relatives from Kentucky arrived to take him down to the Louisville area. But when one of them made disparaging remarks about how his poor mother had 'married a Yankee,' he took offense and ran away. He also told my grandmother that at some point many years later that he traveled to Louisville to seek out these relatives but lost his nerve at the last moment and never met them. He eventually moved to Danbury, CT, married my grandmother Rowena Raymond and had my mother, his only child, who he named Mary Christine after his dead sister. We have been unable to find any record of who his parents actually were or of what happened. To make matters more complicated, he said he was born on June 7, 1886. There was a Boston man named William Porter Adams who indeed had a male child on June 7, 1886, and who indeed had a wife named Clara E. BUT - she was Clara E Rand of New Hampshire, not Clara E Robinson of Kentucky. When we discovered this we assumed that he was somehow confused about his mother's identity. But we have recently discovered an odd fact - the male child born to William Porter Adams and Clara E Adams actually died the same day. This raises the possibility that either my grandfather was coincidentally born on June 7, 1886, to parents with the same names, William and Clara Adams, or that he somehow appropriated the identity of a child who died at birth. In any event, we now consider it very probable that his mother really was Clara Robinson of Kentucky. But we have not been able to find any record of her, or her marriage to an Adams, or the birth of my grandfather or his sister Christine Mary. So if anyone has any information about a Clara Robinson who was from Kentucky, married an Adams in the 1880s, and lived in Boston, please let me know. It's quite a mystery and we're very eager to clear it up. Thanks so much! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. Gene Data
    3. I'd love to get this book on the early Robinsons. My problem is that I haven't been able to track our Robinson line back to England. So I'm writing this in case anyone "out there" has been more successful than I. My 5 G Grandfather was John Robinson [1740 in Goochland, Va? - ?] married to Elizabeth Parrish on 23 Dec 1761? in Goochland, Va] I think John's father was Joshua. This is why [an excerpt from "The County of Ross"]: "From The County of Ross page 280 John Robinson was the last one of the early pioneers in Union. He was a son of Joshua Robinson, who was a member of the Massie surveying and exploring party of 1795, and who was killed in the Indian battle at Reeves' crossing. His brother William was also a participant in this battle, and in 1800 located on a farm of six hundred and forty acres in South Union. He had previously purchased this land of General Massie. William promptly volunteered his services in the war of 1812, though exempt from military duty by reason of age. He died at the age of seventy. John Robinson, on the death of his father, was adopted into the family of his uncle William, and lived with him until he attained his majority. He served as corporal in Captain Manary's company in the war of 1812. He lived to a ripe old age, and left a family of ten children." and another from "Early Settlers" by John Robinson, Pres. of the Ross County Pioneer Association: "His father, Joshua Robinson, emigrated to the Scioto Yalley in 1795, in company with Greneral Nathaniel Massie and his surveyors. On arriving at the. station near where Chillicothe now is, they proceeded up the main Paint creek. Following the Indian trail at Keeves' Crossings, they came suddenly upon a party of Indians encamped. A battle ensued, which soon ended in favor of the whites. The Indians retreated through the woods, carrying off everything but their guns. Joshua Robinson was shot through the body and died immediately. The body was interred near the mouth of Rocky fork, at the head of the rapids. A white man, who had been prisoner with the Indians, made his escape during the fight. The party re- treated to the Three Islands. William Robinson, bi-other of Joshua, was also in this fight. He bought six hundred and forty acres from Greneral Massie in South Union, four miles south of Chillicothe. He moved to his purchase in 1800, and erected the first cabin in the vicinity, and soon cleared a fine farm. When the war was declared in 1812, he was one of the first to volunteer, although over age. He died at the age of seventy years. John Robinson, on the death of his father, was adopted by bis uncle William, and lived with him till he was of age. He was corporal in Captain Alexander Menary's company, of Colonel Clark's regiment, and marched to Sandusky. When the war was over, the regiment was disbanded at Chillicothe, and Mr. Robinson settled on the land on which he still lives, eighty- three years of age, in the enjoyment of good health. He had three sons, James, John, Jr., and Joshua — the latter dead — and two daughters." If anyone knows more about Joshua or can push this line back to England PLEASE let me know. Thanks Renee > 1. It has the earmarks of being written down from memory, as the errors it contains don't seem like common transcription errors. It has Nancy Robinson marrying Boswell Mitchell and Susan (Susannah) marrying Richard Mitchell but in fact it was Susannah who married Boswell Mitchell and Nancy who married Richard Mitchell. But the worse error is that it doesn't mention John Robinson as a son of Benjamin and Mildred Robinson. > >> > >>There is no doubt that Benjamin Robinson (1752-1835) had a son named John. Deed records make it clear--there is even a deed of 24 October 1812 (Deed book G, pages 198-199) in which > Benjamin is transferring land to John Robinson and calls him "son." . . . Thomas Berry, Jr.'s, estate records mention Benjamin Robinson and Joseph Robinson as being the fathers of two John Robinsons who have notes due Thomas Berry, Jr.. The estate settlement even says "John Robinson (husband of Fanny)" . . . Also the final heirs sale of the remaining land of Benjamin Robinson in Fayette Co. lists "John Robinson and Fanny." > >>Regards, > >>Joan > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ROBINSON-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
