    3. Clearly there were a lot who admired George Washington, or his family had more slaves than anyone else around the time of emancipation . . . or when they chose names! (You'd think there'd be more Lincolns!) Selection of names seems to vary a lot--in my family Bibles are names of slaves and offspring, but . . . no last names. One family Bible, a Kentucky Robinson one, has a page with only one name--i am guessing that is a slave--and she has a last name, but not Robinson . . . (and not a name i recognize from our family). (Wish someone could shed some light on who she is . . . .) It says, "Lucy Ann Fisher was born October the 25th 1858." b On Tue, Mar 13, 2012 at 12:00 AM, <robinson-request@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. anyone know (gc-gateway@rootsweb.com) > 2. Author: jrrobins1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.robinson/10282.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: You're going to have to research your own family to find out. There isn't one single answer. Every family, and in some cases, every individual, had a different story. But-- By and large, your last name probably comes from a slave-owning white family. But it is not necessarily the case that this last name was the name of the last slave-owner of your ancestor before emancipation. Many African-American families had last names long before the end of the Civil War, and these names were held onto in spite of many changes in ownership over generations. Just how a family chose a name to stick with is not really known. I think it may be the case that in families brought to the Southern frontier in Mississippi, Alabama, etc. from the older colonial South, that these families had been living on the same farms with the same families for many, many generations and they brought their last names with them from the "Old Country," regardless of the sometimes new owners who brought them West. You can also read in interviews with former slaves that some of them chose their own last names after emancipation, sometimes choosing names different from their parents, adopting the name of someone they admired, or went to work for, or just a name they liked, etc. So, I think you'll have to look into your own family to find the real answer. I really appreciate any info that you can forward. The information from Goodbody family stories I have is that Frank(1828-1906) and Richard(1821-1850) split up from the train, where I do not know, and made their way to Mazatlan. The story is that they took the Barque "Guaymas" from there to San Francisco. Richard died a "few days out of SF". His death date is given as 3 December, 1850. Frank (Francis Alexander) made his way to Downieville and worked a mine called "Whiskey Diggins". He returned to Illinois in the Fall of 1852, winter 1853.(See Huntoon letter,http://history.wilmettelibrary.info/2294767/data) Frank married Catherine Jane Delanty, bought her father's tavern in Waukegan. He then, along with his sons, including my Grandfather, (Richard, 1862-1920), headed south to San Antonio and then westward building railroad bridges and tunnels. Eventually, the family ended up in San Diego in the 1880's. Possibilities, since I can find no record after Uvalde, Tx, in Miles, Leona Station (later Fort Inge) my hypothesis is that they left then per Miles ("26th-Got to Leona Station;20 people left the train for Mazatlan")(14). I have no direct evidence however, but the fact that they are not mentioned again is interesting. I am finding it fascinating to trace the story. I am the youngest of 7 so I am trying to pull out of my older brothers any other info they may have heard through family stories. Again, thanks for any information that you can pass along. Author: dancooper1 Surnames: Goodbody, Cooper, French Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.robinson/9404.1.2.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, There was not mention of either of your ancestors in my ancestor's memoir. But I distinctly recall mention (somewhere) of a man dying at sea approaching San Francisco. I have searched through several long strings of messages, but did not locate the reference. You mention that you have information on your ancestor taking a barque to SF, but are unsure of the dates. Do you have a general time frame for the voyage? Do you have the name of the ship? Your specific sources for whatever bits of information you do have, are also of critical importance, whether they be oral-tradition family stories, letters, etc. I have been fortunate to make the acquaintance of a man also quite interested in the Parker French expedition. My acquaintance is Michael Blakeslee, and I will put you in touch with him. He has perhaps a better chance at recalling where this reference is located, and may have other information on your Goodbody relatives. Michael is the one man on the planet who can now be said to be "the most authoritative and knowledgeable" person alive, on the subject of Parker French. My own records include a cross-reference of all the names on the French wagon train from six different lists (three news stories, the Miles journal list, the David Cooper memoir, and the documented witnesses to the gunfight at Corralitos). I have one Goodbody referenced in three of them, the other in only two. Not that there is much helpful information there, but I presume you are familiar with all three. "F. Goodbody" is mentioned only in the Miles journal. But R. Goodbody is also listed in two articles from the New Orleans Daily Picayune dated 05-26 and 06-02 1850. As it is not very good Internet etiquette to post email addresses, particularly those of other people, I will instead contact Michael Blakeslee and mention how to access this discussion thread to contact you. Meanwhile, I will continue searching at my end to see if I can turn up anything for you. Best of luck in your search. But now I do have a request of you. Although neither Goodbody is mentioned in David Cooper's journal, there is the possibility that I could include some information on them in David's memoir as it is ultimately formatted and edited for publication. There are numerous appendices, for example. Are there any family or other stories about these men, stories that you feel might have some significance? I am speaking of anything particularly remarkable in their earlier lives, or later in the surviving brother's life. I don't know how deeply Mr. Blakeslee's interest in biographical information on these people might be, but he could be interested in your ancestors' lives, as well. Personally, I am most interested in the accounts of people directly referenced in David Cooper's memoir, but others who were in contact with him could also be of considerable interest. I assume you do have at the very least some basic genealogical data. I hope your search turns up some solid information. I will do what I can for you. Good luck.
