I have been trying to connect my Robinsons with the Robinson family who bought Rokeby Park, but without success. My gr.gr.grandfather, Henry Charles Robinson, born c1807, stated on the censuses that he was born in Newport, Isle of Wight, but I have just been over to the Records Office there, and can't find any information to really connect him there. There are some Robinson families who could possibly his relations, but no definite link. The tale that was handed down through my family was that we were connected to the Robinsons of Rokeby. My family lived in a house named Rokeby in London and when they moved, the name of Rokeby went with them. There was another relation who had a herd of Jersey cattle which he named the Rokeby herd. This relation also apparently researched the family and found there was a connection, but unfortunately, he died without passing on the information. There were other things which show a similarity, but n! othing definite. If I could only find the parents of Henry Charles Robinson, I would be one step further back. The researcher on the Isle of Wight wondered if his father was a military man who was on the Isle of Wight for a short period before moving on somewhere else. I will have to look further into that when I go to the National Archives next time. Thanks anyway. Susan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I don't know it the Robinsons you mentioned coincide with mine or not, but I've scanned two relevant pages from my Robinson family book regarding Native American connections. If nothing else, it illustrates the elusive nature of confirming these connections, ESPECIALLY if those concerned have long since deceased. Anyway, this information was primarily based upon interviews with family members. Hope it helps you as well as others searching for these connetions. In fact, Thomas Robinson Baron Grantham was "short and fat". His contemporary and namesake Thomas Robinson of Rokeby was "tall and thin"! Sir Thomas Robinson 1st Baronet left no legitimate issue. So I believe the titles passed to his brothers in succession, before devolving on a distant kinsman. Sir Thomas's only child and heir to what was left of his estate was an illegitimate daughter, Ann, who married William Pirner of London in 1774. They were among my ancestors. The Robinsons of Rokeby claimed descent from the Robertsons of Strowan in Perthshire, Scotland. I have some more information on the Robinsons of Rokeby, but nothing I can see connects them to the Isle of Wight. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
