    1. [ROBINSON] Robinsons of Webster Co & Braxton Co, WVA - Question of Native American Ancestry
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: cmariemyers Surnames: Wolverton Arthur Robinson Miller Gauther Bartlett Dennison Hamrick Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.robinson/9611/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, My great grandmother was Sarah Jane ROBINSON (born 1889 Back Fork Elk River, Webster WVA). I knew her as Susie. It is family legend that she was of Native American decent, possibly Cherokee. I'm very interested in tracing the story. Sarah Jane "Susie" ROBINSON, was the daughter of Elza LeMaster ROBINSON (born 1870 Braxton, WVA) and Mary Anna WOLVERTON ARTHUR (born 1861 Braxton, WVA). It seems that Sarah's mother, Mary Anna WOLVERTON ARTHUR may have been born out of wedlock to George W. WOLVERTON (born 1823 Hampshire Co, WVA) and Rebecca Jane ARTHUR (born 1840 Braxton, WVA). I have a page from the ARTHUR family bible that lists the father of Mary Anna WOLVERTON as Cherokee Indian only (no name). In addition to the bible page, I have gathered the following is information, which I believe to be true, on the lineage of George Washington WOLVERTON of West Virginia: George W. WOLVERTON was the son of Joab Jacob WOLVERTON-5 (Joel William-4, Daniel-3, Daniel-2, Charles-1). There is a long tradition in this branch of the family that George's mother was Native American, possibly Cherokee. Her name is given as Bertha GAUTHER on the Ancestry.com message board for Braxton Co., WV (dated 2 Feb 2007). 1860 Sandrun P.O. Webster Co., WV Census places George W. WOOLVERTON (extra O added on census) and Rebecca Jane ARTHUR on the Thomas MILLER farm in Braxton, VA. George was working as a farm hand. George and Rebecca had two children together, Mary A. Wolverton ARTHUR, born 1861/62 and Robert M. ARTHUR, born 1863/64. George was married to Zelda DENNISON during this time. Census records from 1850, 1870, and 1880 all give the birth year for George W. WOLVERTON as 1822/23. Only the 1860 census gives a different birth year of about 1832. This census also spells his name WOOLVERTON (with 2 Os). George himself might have transposed the numbers in his birth date, listing it as 1832 instead of 1823, and added the extra O in his last name because he was still married to Zelda DENNISON of Harrison Co, WVA. Marriage records show that George and Zelda were married in 1848. George was born before Joab Jacob married Catherine BARTLETT in Preston Co., WV, in 1825. The 1830 census for Hampshire Co., (W)VA, lists a male ages 5-10 in the family of Joab WOLVERTON. This would be George, the child from an earlier marriage or relationship. Most of this information can be found on pp.400-401 of Macdonald's "The Woolverton Family". Macdonald assumes that George died before 1860 because he is not recorded with his wife, Zelda (DENNISON) WOLVERTON, and children in 1860 Harrison Co.,(W)VA census. George is not recorded in the 1860 Harrison Co census with his wife because he is recorded in the 1860 census of Webster Co., WV, on the MILLER farm with Rebecca ARTHUR. Military records show that George W. WOLVERTON enlisted in the Civil War in 1862 and mustered out in 1865. Additionally, George W. WOLVERTON can be found in 1870 in Fort Lick, Webster Co., WV, and in 1880 in Holly, Braxton Co., WV. In the Veterans Census of June 1890 he is living in Holly District, Flatwoods, Braxton Co., WVA. The census states that he is disabled from a gunshot wound in left foot. No record of his death has been found. George married Julia HAMRICK in 1868 in Webster Co., WVA and had 9 children with her. Julia ran into trouble when she claimed George's Civil War pension because there was no record of his divorce from Zelda DENNISON. Evidently he was still married to her. I would love to know if George's mother was Berth GAUTHER and whether or not she was Native American, possibly Cherokee. Any information would be greatly appreciated!! And do you know if any Robinson descendants from the Rocky/Fishing Creek area of Chester Co have been tested? The Robert Robinson Jr who acquired land on Rocky Creek in 1782 was from the Sawneys Creek area of Fairfield Co. It has crossed my mind that Walter Robinson and Waterhouse Robinson, who migrated with his parents Robert and Susannah to Sawneys Creek in 1767, may be the same person. If so DNA testing would show a relationship between Robert Jr and Walter. Just curious if testing has revealed anything. Author: amyrobinson1_1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.robinson/6003.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dear Mr Tucker Many thanks for the information about your John Lovell Robinson's father being Rev Thomas Robinson. The link I had as James Lovell Robinson was from another ancestry member but not referenced as far as I could see - he is probably linked though as it is an unusual name! The link to Elizabeth/Mary Lovell as James' wife is from family records which is why I am not sure as to her exact christian name. Perhaps James had another son Thomas who was also a Rev. I found that John Lovell Robinson b 1849 was born in Cork from the English Census Records but have not accessed the parish records. I am assuming that he is linked to James Robinson although this is a guess as the family following the marriage of Robinson and Lovell used it almost as a double surname, the Lovell is still carried down the male line today. It would be great to sort out the exact links though. I can confirm from my John Lovell Robinson (b1820) records that his father is James Robinson who was a naupeagus (ship wright or ship builder) according to his Trinity College Dublin entry. This also said John was from Bandon, Cork but I have not accessed the parish record for b about 1820. He had 9 children in total 5 girls - Selina, Mary, Adelaide, Alberta and Norah and 4 boys - John, Algernon, Henry and Herbert. I have previously had contact with the Church of Ireland through The Representative Church Body Library at Braemor Park Churchtown Dublin 14 353 1 492 3979 email [email protected] who have biographies of clergy that give birth dates, parents, marriage details in addition to their clerical history. This would be worth trying in order to confirm exactly where John Lovell Robinson 1849 was born and also Rev Thomas Robinson's birth date and place and parents. If you find any information regarding this, I would be most apprecitative of it. I have further details on John Lovell Robinson's (b 1820) children if you are interested. There is also in the English 1871 census a Thomas Lovell Robinson b abt 1845 who is listed with his mother Charlotte. Thomas was born in Potters Perry, Northamptonshire. Where he fits in I'm not sure but must be somewhere. At the moment I have him as one of James Lovell Robinson's sons. Kind Regards Amy Robinson Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I note that Dora Robinson, age 13, listed as a granddaughter, was also there. I don't know the names of Furney Jones' or Rebecca Cowan's parents. John Lovell Robinson (born 1849) married Louisa Aveline Gascoigne (born 1846) in St. John's Church, Ivybridge, Devon, England on Feb 25, 1875. I have a copy of the marriage cert from the GRO. In it, the bridegroom's father is stated as Thomas Robinson and his profession as Clerk in Holy Orders, but not James Lovell Robinson as you suggest. I have not been able to decide if the above Rev. Thomas Robinson is the same person as the Rev. Thomas Robinson LLD (born about 1809-10) who married Susannah Starkey of Bandon, County Cork, Ireland. This Rev. Thomas worked variously in parishes in (1) Kilmainhamwood, Kells, County Meath, Ireland; (2) Bailieborough, County Cavan, Ireland; (3) Fermoy, County Cork, Ireland where he was Headmaster of Fermoy College. He died on Apr 28, 1877 aged 67. Can you help me to decide? You mention that Rev. John Lovell Robinson (b 1849) was born in Cork. Do you know where in Cork? Have you accessed the parish record? I have a copy of the death cert of another Rev. John Lovell Robinson who died on Jan 1, 1879 in Hanworth where he was Rector. He was aged 57 when he died which makes his date of birth 1821 or 1822. As you wrote, he married Susanna Mary Scriven (born Sep 4, 1838) in 1860 but I have not accessed the marriage cert yet. You go on to say that their son was yet another Rev. John Lovell Robinson (born 1865). Do you know if they had other children, what were their names? I would be interested in knowing more about the James Robinson and Elizabeth / Mary Lovell that you mention, if you have more details. This is all made complicated by there being so many Rev. John Lovell Robinsons! I would appreciate any help you can give. Kind regards Ronnie Tucker Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
