Hi Ron, Westerly had a large granite quarry, so that would explain why stonemasons would be there. One of my immigrants from England was also a stonemason who came to Westerly. There are some city directories at ancestry.com for Westerly covering the years from 1888-1892 that I know of. How early were your Reeds in Westerly and what were the given names of the folks you are researching? I have some resources that might track them down. Take care, Donna in RI
Donna, Thank you very much for your reply. My Reeds were John Reed, Mary Reed, Bessie Reed, William Reed, John Reed, and Joseph Reed. Also possibly a Walter Reed. John Reed, the father, came over first in 1869 (per census entries). Then his wife and children followed, one by one. The first photo of my g-grandfather William Henry (born 1866), taken here in the US was taken in Westerly RI. I think I may have found Bessie (listed as Betsey) and John (the son) in Westerly in the 1880 census. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated!
